Sinopsis

Antonio Fogazzaro (1842-1911), a writer, poet, and essayist, was a major figure in Italian literature and culture. He was a multiple nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature and a key interpreter of Modernism and an Italian approach to Romanticism. Although he was always a Catholic, his works often addressed controversial themes such as reincarnation and the destiny of souls, and he remained open to modern scientific theories. With his 1859 essay Origin of Species, Charles Darwin delivered a decisive blow to both creationist theories based on biblical tradition and Lamarckian evolutionism. Fogazzaro read Darwin's book in 1889 and was both captivated and disturbed by it. With this in mind, on March 2, 1893, he gave a lecture at the Collegio Romano titled L'origine dell'uomo e il sentimento religioso (The Origin of Man and Religious Sentiment), in the presence of Queen Margherita of Savoy. In the lecture, he reaffirmed his support for Darwin's theory. The text of this lecture was later included by the author in his work Ascensioni umane, published in Milan in 1899.

A New York Public Library "Best Book of the Year" “The Forgotten Sense leaves us with the hope of new discoveries and new recoveries—so that we may once again revel in the glorious, fragrant world around us.”—Wall Street Journal
By one of the world’s leading researchers into the science of smell, a fascinating exploration of our most essential yet least understood sense—enabling us to appreciate food and drink, warning us of dangers, and even influencing who we fall in love with
Our sense of smell guides our lives far more than our screen-heavy, sight-privileged era would suggest. It animates our experience of food and drink, helps us access memories, and strengthens our intimacy with each other. But, long considered our most “beastly” sense, the inner workings of smell have stumped scientists for centuries.
Now, cognitive scientist and leading smell researcher Jonas Olofsson uncovers the sophisticated processes that drive our olfactory system, with profound implications for how we perceive the world around us. Drawing from cutting-edge original research, Olofsson shows that not only is our sense of smell extraordinarily sensitive, its process of chemical exchange shaped human evolution on its most fundamental level.
From the pheromones, environmental signals, and emotions we process with each breath, olfaction makes us the individuals we are. Moreover, smelling is an intellectual exercise, Olofsson argues, one that we have the remarkable capacity to strengthen and, with some effort, even regain after illness.
With infectious curiosity and a host of applications—from emotional health and gastronomy to literature and even politics—The Forgotten Sense is a wide-ranging and entertaining look at this most understudied function of human life.

The Olympic Class ships were intended to be the greatest liners to ever sail the oceans, but the Britannic sank only four years after her sister ship the Titanic. While the wreck of the Titanic is two miles below the surface and rapidly deteriorating, the Britannic is much more accessible (only 400 ft down) and remains largely intact. One of the largest passenger ships ever to have sunk, her wreck presents a unique opportunity to explore the interior of the Olympic Class liners, and examine areas which on the Titanic simply no longer exist.

Simon Mills bought the wreck of the Britannic in 1996 and has spent more time exploring it than anyone else. Inside the Britannic is the sum of decades of work covering every inch of the shipwreck as he searches for answers to century-old questions, and discovers new mysteries to solve. Simon takes a forensic approach but this book is more than just the autopsy report of a ship.

The Britannic may have been lost over a century ago, but Simon Mills's fascinating new book gives everyone unparalleled access to rediscover her.

    The Plague Years - A Doctor’s...

    Ross A. Slotten MD

In 1992, Dr. Ross A. Slotten signed more death certificates in Chicago—and, by inference, the state of Illinois—than anyone else. As a family physician, he was trained to care for patients from birth to death, but when he completed his residency in 1984, he had no idea that many of his future patients would be cut down in the prime of their lives. Among those patients were friends, colleagues, and lovers, shunned by most of the medical community because they were gay and HIV positive. Slotten wasn’t an infectious disease specialist, but because of his unique position as both a gay man and a young physician, he became an unlikely pioneer, swept up in one of the worst epidemics in modern history.

Plague Years is an unprecedented first-person account of that epidemic, spanning not just the city of Chicago but four continents as well. Slotten provides an intimate yet comprehensive view of the disease’s spread alongside heartfelt portraits of his patients and his own conflicted feelings as a medical professional, drawn from more than thirty years of personal notebooks. In telling the story of someone who was as much a potential patient as a doctor, Plague Years sheds light on the darkest hours in the history of the LGBT community in ways that no previous medical memoir has.
