Sinopsis

This eBook edition of "The Greatest Plays of Anton Chekhov" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices.
Excerpt:
"In each one of us there are too many springs, too many wheels and cogs for us to judge each other by first impressions or by two or three external indications." Ivanoff, Act 3 (1887)
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860 -1904) was a Russian physician, dramaturge and author who is considered to be among the greatest writers of short stories in history. Along with Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg, Chekhov is often referred to as one of the three seminal figures in the birth of early modernism in the theatre. Chekhov had at first written stories only for financial gain, but as his artistic ambition grew, he made formal innovations which have influenced the evolution of the modern short story. He made no apologies for the difficulties this posed to readers, insisting that the role of an artist was to ask questions, not to answer them.

A riveting account of how the public's right to know is being attacked by an unholy alliance among politicians, news organizations and corporate America, from the producer at the heart of the 60 Minutes/George Bush National Guard controversy.
For twenty five years, Mary Mapes has been an award-winning television producer and reporter—the last fifteen of them for CBS News, principally for the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather and 60 Minutes. She had the bedrock of respect of her peers—in the last year alone, she broke the story of the Abu Ghraib prison tortures (which won CBS The Peabody Award) and the existence of Strom Thurmond's illegitimate bi-racial daughter Essie Mae Washington. But it was Dan Rather's lightning rod of a story on George W. Bush's National Guard Service that brought Mapes into an unwanted limelight. The firestorm that followed the broadcast led not only to Mapes' firing and Rather's stepping down from his anchor chair a year early, but to an unprecedented "internal" inquiry into the story—chaired by former Reagan Attorney General Richard Thornburgh.
Peopled with an historic and colorful cast of characters—from Karl Rove to Summer Redstone to John Kerry to Col. Bobby Hodges—this groundbreaking book about how the news is made (and unmade) will make news when it appears this fall. But this, it turns out, is only part of the story. Mapes talks for the first time about the riveting behind-the-scenes action at CBS during this frenzied period and exposes some of the largest political and social controversies that have broken in this new age of dissonance.A Macmillan Audio production.

Mamma Mia! Who would have dared to dream that ABBA would come back to us? Maybe most surprised were the members of the supergroup themselves who for years had cut short any discussion on the subject with a clear ¨nej.¨
ABBA´s reunion is much more than a 70s phenomenon returning to the supertrooper limelight one last time; it hit a nerve in a sensitive world recovering from the pandemic. We somehow believe now that ABBA is back, we will be alright.
Why do we love ABBA so much? Is it a simple case of nostalgia, or is there something much more profound going on?
Cultural historian Xan Fox believes that we have been too distracted and bedazzled by the catchy melodies, the far-out clothes and the facade of happiness to see the truth of ABBA´s staying power. By light-heartedly (and probably erroneously) interpreting the lyrics of some of the most famous ABBA songs, including the new hits from the 2021 album Voyage, he reveals the ingredients of Björn´s, Benny´s, Anni-Frid´s and Agnetha´s secret recipe for success: a dose of honest emotions, carefully mixed with a pinch of Swedish angst and passion.
During ABBA´s long career, little attention was paid to what the supergroup really wanted to tell us. Didn´t the music critics understand Björn´s and Benny´s Weltschmerz? Did no one hear Agnetha´s and Frida´s desolate upper harmonies?
The fans always instinctively knew that there was a message waiting to be heard. Now, for the first time, let´s really listen to ABBA.

Former executive editor of The New York Times and one of our most eminent journalists Jill Abramson provides a “valuable and insightful” (The Boston Globe) report on the disruption of the news media over the last decade, as shown via two legacy (The New York Times and The Washington Post) and two upstart (BuzzFeed and VICE) companies as they plow through a revolution that pits old vs. new media.“A marvelous book” (TheNew York Times Book Review), Merchants of Truth is the groundbreaking and gripping story of the precarious state of the news business. The new digital reality nearly kills two venerable newspapers with an aging readership while creating two media behemoths with a ballooning and fickle audience of millennials. “Abramson provides this deeply reported insider account of an industry fighting for survival. With a keen eye for detail and a willingness to interrogate her own profession, Abramson takes readers into the newsrooms and boardrooms of the legacy newspapers and the digital upstarts that seek to challenge their dominance” (Vanity Fair). We get to know the defenders of the legacy presses as well as the outsized characters who are creating the new speed-driven media competitors. The players include Jeff Bezos and Marty Baron (TheWashington Post), Arthur Sulzberger and Dean Baquet (TheNew York Times), Jonah Peretti (BuzzFeed), and Shane Smith (VICE) as well as their reporters and anxious readers.Merchants of Truth raises crucial questions that concern the well-being of our society. We are facing a crisis in trust that threatens the free press. “One of the best takes yet on journalism’s changing fortunes” (Publishers Weekly, starred review), Abramson’s book points us to the future.

In a ruined temple on the Nile, Anthony Sattin sees a woman praying to the gods of ancient Egypt to bless her with a child. Later in central Cairo he experiences the exuberant celebrations of a saint's day and hears their stony condemnation by an Islamist. The ancient continues to rub up against the modern just as dramatically as when Flaubert wrote, 'Egypt is a wonderful place for contrasts -splendid things gleam in the dust.'In the company of Sattin, fearless in the face of snarling dogs and hostile guardians, we criss-cross modern-day Egypt in search of survivals from ancient Pharaonic culture. Inspired by the experiences of two long-dead English women, he visits moonlit temples and festivals, university professors and religious leaders to unearth snake hunters and magicians, wise women, tree worshippers and charlatans. The Pharaoh's Shadow celebrates Sattin's love of Egypt and his desire to understand her many facets -past, present and future.
