A darkly comic drama from an exciting new playwright.
In three linked scenes, all set in the same terraced house, three ill-matched pairs search for a new beginning - but the past won't let any of them go without a struggle.
Teenager Richard is plotting his escape to art college, just as lecturer Graham is settling in. Mum-to-be Laura has big plans for her forever home - if only Becci will sell it to her. And in the middle of the night, marine expert Mark has an unexpected visitor, a young woman with more than paddleworm samples on her mind...
A story of buried secrets and new beginnings, Forever House is the debut play of West Country-born writer Glenn Waldron. It's a pitch-black comedy drama that asks the question: can you ever really start again?
'Waldron has an exceptional ear for dialogue... every character rings with credibility' - Exeunt Magazine
    'a well-observed piece' - Whatsonstage.com

Father Frederick William Faber was a beloved spiritual writer, preacher, and superior of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in London. An Oxford scholar and Anglican priest since 1839, Faber converted to Roman Catholicism in 1845 following his mentor John Henry (later Cardinal) Newman. During the 1850s, Father Faber published several popular spiritual books, which have been treasured by Catholics ever since: All for Jesus, Growth in Holiness, The Blessed Sacrament, The Creator and the Creature, The Foot of the Cross, Spiritual Conferences, The Precious Blood, and Bethlehem. The present work, Kindness, which bears an imprimatur, is taken in part from Spiritual Conferences, which was published in 1859. (Introduction by dave7)

“The closest thing to a sincerely new brand of poetry to come along in quite some time” from the National Book Award finalist (Pedestal Magazine).

The poems in Sarah Lindsay’s debut, Primate Behavior, have been hailed as “dark-edged . . . with a buoying sense of respect—for the different, the unexpected and the challenging” (Publishers Weekly). Her new collection, Mount Clutter, is the product of an immensely original and exhilarating poetic sensibility, ranging wide across a highly distinctive imaginary landscape. In a voice that is distinctly her own, Lindsay probes the uncharted territories of history’s curious little corners, reanimating obscure accounts of strange discoveries and bizarre scientific findings. A stunning sequence on the discovery of the Bufo Islands imagines what it means to encounter something as yet unnamed, unknown to human history, but bursting with possibilities. Lindsay similarly breathes new life into literary classics and ancient Greek myths, taking, for example, the well-known motif of Orpheus’s descent into the underworld and transforming it into a hauntingly resonant portrait of the vicissitudes of loss. Lindsay’s poems exude an extraordinary ability of fusing the outlandish and the little-known historical minutiae with the unmistakably familiar markers of the human experience.

“[A] vision that beckons the reader after it into unexpected recognitions.”—W. S. Merwin, Pulitzer Prize- and National Book Award-winning poet

“Lindsay is blessed with the sort of X-ray vision a philosopher would kill for . . . Her poems open doors to other worlds and other ways of seeing.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Erudite and whimsical.”—Greensboro News & Record

William Collins Books and Decca Records are proud to present ARGO Classics, a historic catalogue of classic prose and verse read by some of the world’s most renowned voices. Originally released as vinyl records, these expertly remastered stories are now available to download for the first time.
‘Though I am not naturally honest, I am sometimes so by chance.’
Based on Robert Greene’s story Pandosto, The Winter’s Tale play tells the story of Leontes, king of Sicilia, and his childhood friend, Polixenes, king of Bohemia. In a jealous rage, Leontes mistakenly accuses Polixenes and his own his wife, Hermione, of adultery and her newborn daughter as illegitimate, casting her into the wilderness, causing their son to die of grief and Hermione to seemingly follow suit. With his family dead or believed dead, Leontes must face the tragic consequences of his actions. With unbridled honesty and the pain of love, the final act is one of Shakespeare’s most moving reconciliation scenes.
All of the Shakespeare plays within the ARGO Classics catalogue are performed by the Marlowe Dramatic Society and Professional Players. The Marlowe was founded in 1907 with a mission to focus on effective delivery of verse, respect the integrity of texts, and rescue neglected plays by Shakespeare’s contemporaries and the less performed plays of Shakespeare himself. The Marlowe has performed annually at Cambridge Arts Theatre since its opening in 1936 and continues to produce some of the finest actors of their generations.
Thurston Dart, Professor of Music at London University and a Fellow of Jesus College Cambridge, directed the music for this production.
The full cast includes: William Squire; Denis McCarthy; Terrence Hardiman; Corin Redgrave; Toby Robertson; Anthony White; George Rylands; John Barton; Michael Bates; Margaretta Scott; Mary Conroy; Joan Hart; Jill Daltry; Janette Richer; Clive Swift; Ian McKellen; Richard Marquand; Donald Beves; Anthony Arlidge.
The Winter's Tale, a masterpiece from the best of Shakespeare's less performed plays, has been brought to life by the Marlowe Dramatic Society, a top performing group in the European theatre scene. Their interpretation of the play, steeped in unbridled honesty and the pain of love, has been hailed as one of the finest of their generation.
For fans of Richard Parsons (GCSE English Shakespeare Text Guide), and Arthur Miller (Incident at Vichy).
