Sinopse

Anthony Trollope's "The Palliser Novels: Book 1-6" presents a rich tapestry of Victorian social and political life, intricately weaving the personal ambitions and ethical dilemmas of its characters through the narrative. With his hallmark realism and keen psychological insight, Trollope meticulously explores themes of power, ambition, marriage, and class within the framework of British parliamentary politics. This series introduces the astute politician Plantagenet Palliser and his relationships, revealing the intricate interplay between personal life and public duty amid the evolving societal landscape of 19th-century England. Trollope, an astute observer of his era, derived inspiration for his works from his experience as a post office clerk and his deep engagement with the political sphere. His unique insight into the complexities of human behavior and social relations is reflected in the nuanced portrayals of both the nobility and the middle class. Familiarity with the intricacies of bureaucracy and the moral questions inherent in political life propelled him to create a series that is not merely a chronicle of events but a profound commentary on the ethical ramifications of power. The true definition of a shaggy dog story is as follows: a long, rambling story or joke, typically one that is amusing only because it is absurdly inconsequential or pointless. A ‘Shaggy dog’ story in its purest form is a long-winded tale which eventually arrives at a sometimes ridiculous and often ‘groan-inducing’ punchline. After much research and to the best of my knowledge, these stories have never been released in audiobook form or print. Having said that, the main reason for putting together this collection of stories and jokes is in the hope of encouraging parents, particularly fathers to become storytellers to their children, although obviously, anyone can listen. As a father of three, these stories hold fond memories for me during long car journeys and keeping my sons entertained. No matter how many times they’re repeated, kids love to hear them over and over again. Some of the stories might be considered incredibly ‘cringe worthy’ but the fact is, kids, love them and will love hearing you tell them. I guarantee they will pass these stories on to their children when they too become parents. Some of these tales might not be considered ‘politically correct these days, so use your judgement in their retelling. I have included some of the best ‘Quickfire Dad jokes’ between stories and a rude section of rhymes and limericks at the end of the book. These will hopefully bring back fond memories from your childhood and time in the playground as they do for me. Have fun and enjoy spending time with your children, they grow up so quickly. To quote Superman: The son becomes the father and the father becomes the son.

Surreal, hilarious, and shrewdly poignant—a novel about a Korean American woman living in Berlin whose obsession with a K-pop idol sends her to Seoul on a journey of literary self-destruction.

It’s as if her life only began once Moon appeared in it. The desultory copywriting work, the boyfriend, and the want of anything not-Moon quickly fall away when she beholds the idol in concert, where Moon dances as if his movements are creating their own gravitational field; on live streams, as fans from around the world comment in dozens of languages; even on skincare products endorsed by the wildly popular Korean boy band, of which Moon is the youngest, most luminous member. Seized by ineffable desire, our unnamed narrator begins writing Y/N fanfic—in which you, the reader, insert [Your/Name] and play out an intimate relationship with the unattainable star.

Then Moon suddenly retires, vanishing from the public eye. She stumbles into total disorientation. As Y/N flies from Berlin to Seoul to be with Moon, our narrator, too, journeys in search of the object of her love. In Korea, an escalating series of mistranslations and misidentifications land her at the headquarters of the Kafkaesque entertainment company that manages the boyband until, at a secret location, together with Moon at last, art and real life approach their final convergence.

From a conspicuous new talent comes Y/N, a provocative literary debut about the universal longing for transcendence and the tragic struggle to assert one’s singular story amidst the amnesiac effects of globalization. Crackling with the intellectual sensitivity of Elif Batuman and the sinewy absurdism of Thomas Pynchon, Esther Yi’s prose unsettles the boundary between high and mass art, exploding our expectations of a novel about “identity” and offering in its place a sui generis picture of the loneliness that afflicts modern life.
