Sinopsis

In "The Man Who Kept His Money in a Box," Anthony Trollope explores themes of wealth, human folly, and the intricate social dynamics of Victorian England. Through the lens of the protagonist, whose eccentric habit of storing his money in an unusual manner sparks curiosity and scrutiny, Trollope employs a blend of wit and irony in his narrative style. His keen observations of human behavior reflect the complexities of financial anxieties and societal status during a time when industrialization was reshaping the class landscape. The story's concise format exemplifies Trollope's mastery of character development and his astute commentary on the moral implications of wealth in contemporary society. Trollope, a prolific novelist and keen chronicler of Victorian life, was influenced by his own experiences in the banking sector and a deep understanding of societal structures. His background, combined with an appreciation for the intricacies of human relationships, undoubtedly informed the motivations behind this work. The author's extensive travels and observations of a rapidly changing world lend authenticity to the pressures and expectations faced by his characters, creating a narrative that resonates with both humor and gravity. I highly recommend this novella to readers who are interested in a humorous yet poignant reflection on the follies of wealth and its impact on personal relationships. Trollope's deft storytelling invites both pleasure and intellectual engagement, making it a delightful and thought-provoking read for anyone seeking insight into the human condition amid the trappings of Victorian society.

Pride and Prejudice is a timeless novel by Jane Austen that delves into themes of love, class, and societal expectations. Set in early 19th-century England, the story revolves around the Bennet family, particularly the five unmarried daughters. Elizabeth Bennet, the second eldest, is known for her sharp wit and independent spirit. When the wealthy and handsome Mr. Darcy arrives in the neighborhood, he immediately takes a dislike to Elizabeth, while she finds him arrogant and aloof.
As the narrative unfolds, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy encounter a series of misunderstandings and preconceived notions that hinder their potential connection. Elizabeth's initial prejudice against Mr. Darcy is fueled by his pride and sense of entitlement, while his pride prevents him from recognizing Elizabeth's true worth. Through a series of events, including a misunderstanding involving Mr. Darcy's friend, Mr. Bingley, and a letter revealing Mr. Darcy's true feelings, both characters undergo significant personal growth and come to appreciate each other's qualities.

Frank Richard Stockton was born in Philadelphia on 5th April 1834.
His father, a Methodist minister, discouraged Stockton’s literary career from an early age. Feeling unable to go against those wishes it was for many years that Stockton’s income was maintained as a wood engraver.
His first work was published in 1867 and his first collection only appeared in 1870. Despite this late arrival Stockton’s innovative and often far-fetched stories, with a gentle ‘poking fun’ humour were very popular. Like his contemporary Mark Twain he avoided the scolding, hectoring and moral tones of many other authors and instead gently teased and cajoled his reader to open their eyes to the ills, the greed and the ambitions of the world around them. His sci-fi stories in particular were far-seeing and inventive including a tale of negative gravity and a bloodless Anglo-US war won by technological feats.
Perhaps his most enduring tale though is ‘The Lady, or the Tiger?’ from 1882. A condemned man is given a choice of being eaten alive or marrying his princess lover. But he has to choose which door each is behind.
Frank R Stockton died in Washington, DC, on 20th April 1902, of a cerebral haemorrhage. He is buried at The Woodlands in Philadelphia.
