Sinopse

Anthony Trollope's "Ultimate Collection" serves as a comprehensive compendium showcasing over 100 of his novels, short stories, articles, memoirs, and essays. This anthology encapsulates the breadth of Trollope's literary oeuvre, characterized by its vivid characterizations, intricate social dynamics, and astute observations of Victorian society. From the comic intricacies of 'The Chronicles of Barsetshire' to the biting satire of 'The Way We Live Now,' Trollope's masterful narrative style blends realism with moral depth, offering a window into the era's prevailing attitudes and class struggles. His works are not merely stories; they are insightful explorations of the human condition, deftly interwoven with themes of ambition, love, and social justice. Born in 1815, Trollope was not only a prolific novelist but also a civil servant, which profoundly influenced his perspectives on society and governance. His experiences in the Post Office, alongside his travels abroad, illuminated his understanding of the various societal layers in England and Europe. Trollope's multifaceted career lent him a unique voice that resonated with contemporary readers while paving the way for future generations of writers, solidifying his place as one of the foremost novelists of the 19th century. I highly recommend this collection to both newcomers and seasoned readers of Trollope. A road trip becomes a dead end for a schoolteacher in this haunting cold case of murder that became a fifty-year fight for justice.

In June of 1968, Irene Izak, a young French teacher from Scranton, Pennsylvania, was pulling an all-nighter on the road toward the promise of a new life in Quebec. The last time she was seen alive was at 2:09 a.m. by a toll collector at Thousand Island Bridge who claimed Irene was visibly afraid. Less than a half-hour later, Irene was found bludgeoned to death in a ravine bordering DeWolf Point State Park. There were no signs of robbery or sexual assault. For reasons unknown, Irene had been compelled to pull off the interstate and abandon her car, only to be brutally murdered.

Irene's body was discovered by State Trooper Dave Hennigan, who'd stopped her for speeding shortly before—and issued the young woman a warning.

Blending novelistic suspense with true-crime reporting, author Dave Shampine investigates a crime that shook the communities of northeast Pennsylvania and New York's North Country—a vicious and confounding killing that has remained unsolved but not forgotten.

In the early 20th century, one of the most integral members of the criminal underworld was Arnold Rothstein, the archetype of the old school mobster. He was intelligent, charming, well-spoken, grotesquely wealthy, and a sharp dresser, often pictured with a patterned bowtie and a flat-top fedora snugly fit over his receding hairline. And yet, he was nothing like the stereotypical mobster; Arnold was not a drinker or smoker, and he was not one to be tempted by illicit substances. He was a notorious high roller, with pockets holding wads of $100 bills, but to the casual eye, he was just another dapper, well-mannered gentleman who frequented the tracks and casinos after a long day at the office.
Today, Rothstein is remembered for his murky association with the most notorious event in the history of American sports: the fixing of the 1919 World Series by the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox were favored 5:1 to beat the Cincinnati Reds, and for the first time since 1903, the Series would be a best-of-nine format. However, at a time when players were treated as second class, some sought a payday beyond what they made in the leagues, and the White Sox players were some of the most poorly paid in the league. The owner of the team, Charles A. Comiskey, was one of the cheapest owners in the game.
Around two weeks before the World Series, Chicago first baseman Chick Gandil met with a gambler in his Boston hotel room. During that meeting, Gandil told Joseph Sullivan that for $100,000, he and other members of the White Sox were willing to take a dive and make sure that the Reds won the World Series. Gandil was able to convince the team’s top two pitchers to go along with the plan, as well as five other players. With that, the plan to throw the World Series was put in motion, and rumors began to spread around the country prior to the start of the series as gamblers wagered large sums of money on the Reds.
