Sinopsis

What is a traditional liberal education, and what are the arguments for it in the twenty-first century? This collection of essays by Anthony O’Hear sets out an alternative educational philosophy to the prevailing progressivist thinking on these issues, which tends to be either utilitarian or child-centred, or both, and often politically motivated.

THE ULTIMATE TRIVIA AND CURIOUS FACTS COLLECTION

    CREATED BY TRIVIA HUB

American Idol is a reality singing competition created by Simon Fuller, based on the British show Pop Idol. The show aims to discover unsigned singing talent, with the winner decided by American viewers. Contestants go through a series of auditions, including initial auditions with producers, and auditions before the judges. The selected contestants then perform in Hollywood, facing eliminations until the semi-finals, when public voting determines the outcome. The show features themes for each week's performances, often with celebrity mentors. From the semi-finals onward, the fate of the contestants is decided by public vote via phone, text, and online. The show was broadcast on Fox from 2002-2016, then moved to ABC in 2018.

    CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

American Idol was based on the British show Pop Idol, which was in turn inspired by the New Zealand television singing competition Popstars. Television producer Nigel Lythgoe saw a version in Australia and helped bring it over to Britain.

In 2001, Simon Fuller, Simon Cowell, and TV producer Simon Jones attempted to sell the Pop Idol format to the United States, but the idea was initially met with poor responses from all the television networks. However, Rupert Murdoch, head of Fox's parent company, was later persuaded to buy the series by his daughter, Elisabeth, who had seen the British show.

One change was made to the American version because of the multiple time zones in the United States. An additional half-hour results show was added the day following the performance show because it was impractical for the country to vote in the same time period.

Forensic science is in crisis and at a cross-roads. Movies and television dramas depict forensic heroes with high-tech tools and dazzling intellects who—inside an hour, notwithstanding commercials—piece together past-event puzzles from crime scenes and autopsies. Likewise, Sherlock Holmes—the iconic fictional detective, and the invention of forensic doctor Sir Arthur Conan Doyle—is held up as a paragon of forensic and scientific inspiration—does not "reason forward" as most people do, but "reasons backwards." Put more plainly, rather than learning the train of events and seeing whether the resultant clues match those events, Holmes determines what happened in the past by looking at the clues. Impressive and infallible as this technique appears to be—it must be recognized that infallibility lies only in works of fiction. Reasoning backward does not work in real life: reality is far less tidy.

In courtrooms everywhere, innocent people pay the price of life imitating art, of science following detective fiction. In particular, this book looks at the long and disastrous shadow cast by that icon of deductive reasoning, Sherlock Holmes.
