Summary

A case for the constitutional roots of public administration: “Essential to the field as we develop new theories and applications in a postmodern America.” ?Political Studies Review

Combining insights from traditional thought and practice and from contemporary political analysis, Madison’s Managers presents a constitutional theory of public administration in the United States. Anthony Michael Bertelli and Laurence E. Lynn Jr. contend that managerial responsibility in American government depends on official respect for the separation of powers and a commitment to judgment, balance, rationality, and accountability in managerial practice.

The authors argue that public management—administration by unelected officials of public agencies and activities based on authority delegated to them by policymakers—derives from the principles of American constitutionalism, articulated most clearly by James Madison. Public management is, they argue, a constitutional institution necessary to successful governance under the separation of powers. To support their argument, Bertelli and Lynn combine two intellectual traditions often regarded as antagonistic: modern political economy, which regards public administration as controlled through bargaining among the separate powers and organized interests, and traditional public administration, which emphasizes the responsible implementation of policies established by legislatures and elected executives while respecting the procedural and substantive rights enforced by the courts. These literatures are mutually reinforcing, the authors argue, because both feature the role of constitutional principles in public management.

Madison’s Managers challenges public management scholars and professionals to recognize that the legitimacy and future of public administration depend on its constitutional foundations and their specific implications for managerial practice.

How do firms compete? How do firms earn above normal returns? What's needed to sustain superior performance long term? An increasingly powerful answer to these fundamental questions of business strategy lies in the concept of dynamic capabilities. These are the skills, processes, routines, organizational structures, and disciplines that enable firms to build, employ, and orchestrate intangible assets relevant to satisfying customer needs, and which cannot be readily replicated by competitors. Enterprises with strong dynamic capabilities are intensely entrepreneurial. They not only adapt to business ecosystems; they also shape them through innovation, collaboration, learning, and involvement.
This book is the clearest and most succinct statement of the core ideas of dynamic capabilities. David Teece, the pioneer of the dynamic capabilities perspective, explains their genesis, application, and how they offer an alternative approach to much conventional strategic thinking grounded in simplistic and outdated understandings of industrial organizations and the foundations of competitive advantage. Accessibly written and presented, it will be an invaluable and stimulating tool for all those who want to understand this important contribution to strategic thinking, be they Mba students, academics, managers, or consultants.

Award-winning, bestselling author Scott Mautz defines mental strength as the ability to self-regulate emotions, thoughts, and behaviors to achieve exceptional outcomes, despite adversity. It's the leadership superpower of our times. Mentally strong leaders are in control of themselves and their environment; they have endurance, are disciplined, and external stressors make their decision-making sharper. The Mentally Strong Leader gives listeners a mental exercise plan to become such a leader. Listeners will walk away with a menu of over fifty proven tools they can choose from to build a tailored set of habits in six areas that will make them mentally stronger: fortitude, decision-making, confidence, goal-focus, boldness, and messaging. Inspired by Mautz's hit LinkedIn Learning course, "10 Habits of Mentally Strong People," his twenty-five years leading some of Procter & Gamble's multi-billion-dollar businesses, and over thirty years of studying this topic, The Mentally Strong Leader relies on data and research, habit-building science, and practical tools and exercises to create enduring understandings for listeners. Mautz begins with an explanation of the power of mental strength and offers a Mental Strength Self-Assessment. He finishes by providing a Mental Action Plan (MAP) to help listeners create their own, tailored practice.
