Summary

A New York Times bestseller! In 2006, twenty-seven-year-old Jessica Buchanan stepped off a plane in Nairobi, Kenya, with a teaching degree and long-held dreams of helping to educate African children. By 2009, she had met and married a native Swede named Erik Landemalm, who worked to coordinate humanitarian aid with authorities in Africa. Together the two moved from Nairobi to Somalia, and with hopes of starting a family, their future couldn’t have been brighter. . . .But on October 25, 2011, Jessica and a colleague were kidnapped at gunpoint and held for ransom by a band of Somali pirates. For the next three months, Jessica was terrorized by more than two dozen gangsters, held outdoors in filthy conditions, and kept on a starvation diet while her health steadily deteriorated. Negotiations for ransom dragged on, and as the ordeal stretched into its third month, the captors grew increasingly impatient. Every terrifying moment Jessica Buchanan spent suffering in captivity was matched by that of her adoring husband working behind the scenes to deal with her captors. After ninety-three days of fruitless negotiations, and with Jessica’s medical state becoming a life-or-death issue, President Barack Obama ordered Navy SEAL Team Six to attempt a rescue operation. On January 25, 2012, just before the president delivered his State of the Union speech, the team of twenty-four SEALs, under the cover of darkness, attacked the heavily armed hostiles. They killed all nine with no harm to the hostages, who were quickly airlifted out on a military rescue helicopter. In riveting detail, this book chronicles Jessica and Erik’s mutual journey during those torturous months. Together they relate the events prior to the kidnapping, the drama of Jessica’s fight to stay alive, and Erik’s efforts to bolster and support the hunt for her while he acted as liaison between their two families, the FBI, professional hostage negotiators, and the United States government. Both a testament to two people’s courage and a nail-biting look at a life-or-death struggle, this is a harrowing and deeply personal story about their triumph over impossible odds.

An exceptional man, an extraordinary career – a life of Seán MacBride, Ireland's most distinguished statesman

Sean MacBride (1904–1988) was at different times the Chief of Staff of the IRA, a top criminal lawyer, leader of Clann na Poblachta, Irish Foreign Minister, UN Commissioner, and a founding member of Amnesty International. He is the only person to have won both the Nobel Peace Prize (1974) and the Lenin Peace Prize (1977).

Seán MacBride, A Life, by accomplished historian Elizabeth Keane, is the first complete biography of this multifaceted, complex and internationally renowned Irish politician. From revolutionary terrorist to conservative constitutional politician to liberal elder statesman and international humanitarian, Seán MacBride uncovers the political and personal story of one of twentieth-century Ireland's most controversial figures.

Seán MacBride begins with MacBride's birth in Paris in 1904. With icons of the nationalist movement in Ireland for parents, MacBride's future as a politician was fated: his father John MacBride was a Boer War hero executed for his role in the Easter Rising of 1916; his mother Maud Gonne was an outspoken revolutionary and the lost love and muse of Ireland's most famous poet W.B. Yeats.

Seán MacBride then looks at MacBride's membership of the IRA, which he joined as teenager. He fought in both the Irish War of Independence and the Irish Civil War. Seán MacBride charts his rapid rise through the ranks, looking at how he became the Director of Intelligence and later Chief of Staff of the IRA before relinquishing his position and becoming a top criminal barrister.

MacBride entered Dáil Éireann for the first time in 1947 as the leader of Clann na Poblachta, and formed the first coalition government in Irish history in 1948. Appointed Minister for External Affairs (Foreign Minister), Seán MacBride considers MacBride's tenure in office, which included overseeing the acceptance of the European Convention on Human Rights, the rejection of NATO and Ireland's exit from the Commonwealth. His refusal to support fellow Clann na Poblachta TD Noël Browne's Mother-and-Child Scheme in the face of the opposition of the Catholic bishops led to the collapse of the coalition.

MacBride lost his seat in the 1957 election, retired officially from Irish party politics and entered the third phase of his life: international statesman and human rights activist. Seán MacBride looks at the pivotal role MacBride played in European and international politics and human rights over the course of his later years, including founding Amnesty International, opposing apartheid in South Africa and agitating against nuclear armament.

Few Irish politicians have had such an impact domestically and internationally. From MacBride's violent IRA beginnings to his later advocacy of peace in politics, Seán MacBride, A Life captures the twists and turns of a fascinating career. A figure of national and international importance, one of the most distinguished Irish people of the twentieth century, he has found a biographer of authority and assurance in Elizabeth Keane, whose survey of his life and times is astute, insightful and convincing.

“When I went to prison he disowned me. There will always be wars, he said. No there won’t, I said. Shit no, I said, are you crazy? That was roughly forty years ago. It was apparent to me then that war must soon become totally unthinkable. It happened even quicker than I’d thought it would. And so now we most of us do the best we can never to think of it, even though, as I write, about one-fourth of the world’s best technological and scientific minds are employed full time in preparing for this unthinkable war. . . .”

Chambliss zigzagged the globe interviewing nearly sixty women peacemakers throughout the world in pursuit of learning how peace is actually made. In this book, Women Peacemakers: What We Can Learn from Them, she shares 15 remarkable stories from this band of wildly diverse women change agents, from an Israeli soldier to an Irish nun, a Standing Rock Clan Mother to an ex-princess, a paralyzed Olympic hopeful to a young Zimbabwean orphan who now directs the esteemed Future of Hope Foundation.
Chambliss captures the women's answers to her question, “What advice would you give to someone wanting to become a peacemaker?” She shares over twenty lessons she learned from how the women do their work. The listener is invited to embark on their own act of peacemaking, however small or grand, then write up the story of their undertaking and send it to her website: barbechamblissauthor.com.
Sprinkled throughout the text are poignant quotations about the value of making peace. This book, narrated by the author, is both a deeply entertaining read and a guidebook, crafted by inspiration and calling to everyone on earth who is willing to be counted among the ranks of Conscious Peacemakers.
Barbe is a fourth-generation Coloradan. She’d rather sleep under the stars than beneath a roof, and revels in being outdoors in all seasons of her beloved Rocky Mountains. She recharges her soul and does her best writing at her yurt, perched 8,000 feet high on the edge of an alpine meadow she shares with a herd of elk, a chorus of coyotes and family of pesky marmots. For fun she sings in a Cowboy Corral and plays in a marimba ensemble. Her goal is to wake up the conscious peacemaker in as many people as possible during her life.

Tales of female daredevils, warriors, killers, and victims: “Radiant essays inspired by ‘slivers and bits’ of real women's lives…Wise, fresh, captivating.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)   At the Dreamland, women and girls flicker from the shadows to take their proper place in the spotlight. In this lyrical collection, Sonja Livingston weaves together strands of research and imagination to conjure figures from history, literature, legend, and personal memory. The result is a series of essays that highlight lives as varied, troubled, and spirited as America itself.   Livingston breathes life into subjects who led extraordinary lives—as rule-breakers, victims, or those whose differences made them cultural curiosities—bringing together those who slipped through the world largely unseen with those whose images were fleeting or faulty so that they, too, remained relatively obscure. Included are Alice Mitchell, a Memphis society girl who murdered her female lover in 1892; Maria Spelterini, who crossed Niagara Falls on a tightrope in 1876; May Fielding, a “white slave girl” buried in a Victorian cemetery; Valaida Snow, a Harlem Renaissance trumpeter; a child exhibited as Darwin’s Missing Link; the sculptors’ model Audrey Munson; a Crow warrior; victims of a 1970s serial killer; the Fox Sisters; and many more.
