Sinopsis

The War Record of the Fifth Company, New England Regiment, Second Plattsburg Training Camp is a poignant chronicle that offers a multifaceted perspective on military life during a pivotal period in American history. Written with a blend of narrative immediacy and reflective depth, the book combines firsthand accounts, official reports, and personal anecdotes from soldiers who trained at Plattsburg. This literary work stands as a testament to the camaraderie and struggles of young men preparing for the profound challenges of World War I, making it a crucial document for understanding the human experience of war beyond the battlefield. The anonymity of the author adds layers of intrigue, suggesting that he may have been directly involved in the activities described within the record. This perspective is significant, as it reflects the collective voice of those who served, inviting readers to engage deeply with the emotional landscape of a generation faced with unprecedented circumstances. The author's commitment to capturing the essence of life in the training camp illuminates important societal and military themes of camaraderie, duty, and sacrifice. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in military history, social dynamics during times of conflict, or the nuances of coming-of-age narratives in extreme situations. The War Record serves not only as an important historical document but also as a compelling exploration of resilience and purpose in the face of adversity.

A moving and heroic memoir about surviving suicide and long-term mental health complications, while summoning the courage required to persist in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles and spread a message of positivity.

Lost in the depths of a devastating depression, Kevin Hines did the unthinkable and jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge. He is one of only four to ever have survived that jump with his full health and mobility intact. Hines then went on to accomplish what had formerly seemed impossible: he has dedicated his life to suicide prevention, reaching audiences well into the millions. With the help of his wife and family, he has spread his message of compassion and fighting to “be here tomorrow” on Good Morning America, the Today show, Larry King, and BuzzFeed, as well as countless other in-person speaking venues.

Going far beyond his first book, The Art of Being Broken takes full advantage of the perspective Kevin has gained since his suicide attempt. In this new story, we learn that recovery is not a straight path but a constant journey, and often the best way to help ourselves stay grounded is by helping others in need. Including raw and moving contributions from those whose lives Kevin has saved, The Art of Being Broken will be indispensable for all those who are grappling with suicidal ideation and provides key insights to their loved ones.

British Cinema - A Very Short...

Cinema has had a hugely influential role on global culture in the twentieth century at multiple levels: social, political, and educational. The part of British cinema in this has been controversial—often derided as a whole, but also vigorously celebrated, especially in terms of specific films and film-makers.

In this Very Short Introduction, Charles Barr considers films and filmmakers, and studios and sponsorship, against the wider view of changing artistic, socio-political, and industrial climates over the decades of the twentieth century. Considering British cinema in the wake of one of the most familiar of cinematic reference points—Alfred Hitchcock—Barr traces how British cinema has developed its own unique path, and has since been celebrated for its innovative approaches and distinctive artistic language.

There are great deal of similarities between the arcs of Laurie in Little Women and Goethe's "sorrows of young werther." Both stories follow a young man's journey from innocence to experience and disillusionment, but the endings are vastly different. In this book we compare and contrast the two arcs to see which is more tragic. One of Louisa May Alcott´s favourite writers was the German poet Goethe and Laurie´s character arc in Little Women is surprisingly similar to Goethe´s young hero, Werther. Little Women Podcast is an ongoing series of video essays, articles and podcast episodes that examines the intersections in Louisa May Alcott´s Little Women.
Hosted by Alcott essayist Niina Niskanen. Regular visits from literal scholars and Little Women fans. You can listen to Little Women Podcast on YouTube, Spotify, I Heart Radio and all other major podcast platforms.
Goethe was one of the most praised German authors of his time. Louisa May Alcott was a big fan of Goethe. Louisa was a transcendentalist. The whole worldview of the transcendentalist could be described as a nature-centric form of Christianity. It was based on German philosophy and German romanticism. Goethe was one of the most important literal inspirations for the transcendentalist because he captured the essence of their belief into poetic form.
Louisa May Alcott according to her own words, grew up hearing stories of Goethe on her father's knee. Bronson Alcott's library included a contemporary translation of Goethe's biography, and we can assume that it was one of the first books that Louisa read. One of Lou's most famous literal characters, Laurie from Little Women is partially based on Goethe and Goethe's literal heroes.

You hear them first, the whop whop sound of rotor blades chopping through the humid Vietnam air. Suddenly they appear, screaming toward the landing zone at treetop level. Gunships launch rockets into the nearby tree line. The resulting explosions announce the arrival of the lift helicopters, pointing their noses skyward like falcons coming out of a dive for landing. Bullets rip into the thin aluminum skin and plastic that surrounds the men who fly these machines. When one pilot is hit, the other takes the controls and carries on. When one helicopter crashes in flames, the pilots in the others maintain formation and push ahead. Nothing deters these warriors, volunteers all, from flying on with the tenaciousness of zealots.

Who are these men? Where did they come from? Where have they gone?

Mended Wings is their story. Follow the lives of ten Purple Heart heroes as they relate the Vietnam War experience from the perspective of the helicopter cockpit. Get to know the generation of men who fought with pride, determination, skill, and courage only to be shunned when they brought their battered bodies and haunting memories home. Their fathers and uncles were heralded as the "greatest generation." Meet the forgotten generation. Meet the men whose stories did not end as a name on a black wall in Washington D.C. Meet the survivors.
