If, in these pages, written in remembrance of my father, I should tell you, my dear friends, nothing new of him, I can, at least, promise you that what I shall tell will be told faithfully, if simply, and perhaps there may be some things not familiar to you. So begins chapter one of My Father as I Recall Him, the personal recollections of Mary Dickens, (Mamie, as she was called), the oldest daughter of the great novelist, Charles Dickens. In this WWII memoir, a British POW recounts his captivity, his thrilling escape, and his time as a fugitive on the run through occupied France.

British army doctor Philip Newman was left behind after the evacuation from Dunkirk. As a prisoner of war, he was first held in France, then in Germany, where he treated the wounded and sick and planned to escape. After several failed attempts, he finally got out over the wire and journeyed for weeks as a fugitive from northern France to Marseilles.

Newman was guided along the way by French civilians, resistance fighters, and the organizers of the famous Pat O’Leary escape line. He eventually crossed the Pyrenees into Spain, reaching Gibraltar and freedom.

In this memoir, Newman vividly recounts his work as a doctor at Dunkirk, life in the prison camps, and his dramatic escape. His story shines a light on the ingenuity and courage of the ordinary men and women who risked their lives to help him on his way. It is also one of the best accounts we have of what it was like to be on the run in occupied Europe.

From crime to verdict, award-winning journalist Gene Kerrigan tells the brutal stories of some of Ireland's most notorious murders, kidnappings and violent attacks

Hard Cases is a collection of startling stories about the reality of crime and court cases in Ireland. In these stories, there are no crime bosses with quaint nicknames; the police don't collect convenient clues that tell them whodunnit. Instead, it contains cases both famous and obscure in which the outcome is sometimes just, sometimes unsettling and always complicated, in which there are no easy answers and no simple victims.

In Hard Cases, you will delve into the criminal underworld of Ireland, starting with the tale of Dessie O'Hare which records in breathtaking detail the inside story of a notorious kidnapping.

There's the story of Karl Crawley, a sometimes gentle, sometimes wild young Dublin man who found a shocking way of fighting back against authority.

Then there's the story of Peter Matthews, who went into a police station to answer questions about a petty crime and ended up dead – with gardaí covering up the reason why.

Hard Cases also exposes the story behind some Ireland's most infamous crime scenes: how did Fr Molloy come to die in the bedroom of his married friends? What happened when Christy Payne came home to find his daughter's boyfriend wielding a hatchet?

Hard Cases is a must-read – revealing the true stories behind some of Ireland's most famous headlines and exposing the machinations of the Irish justice system, it is a shocking and fascinating snapshot of Irish crime, criminals and court cases.

"William Tallon was a creature of extremes: though intensely loyal, he was also a dangerous risk-taker; though charming, he could also be vicious; though considerate and amusing, he could be ruthless and predatory. For much of his life he was driven by two demons: a powerful sex drive and an intense, almost pathological love for the Queen Mother…"

From humble beginnings as a shopkeeper's son in Coventry to 'Page of the Backstairs' at Clarence House, William Tallon, or 'Backstairs Billy' as he came to be known, entered royal service at the age of fifteen. Over the next fifty years, he became one of the most notorious and flamboyant characters ever to have graced the royal household - the one servant the Queen Mother just could not do without. While others came and went, he remained by her side, becoming one of her most trusted friends and confidants.

The fascinating life story of the man who spent more than half a century working for one of the world's most elusive institutions, Backstairs Billy provides a rare glimpse of what the royals really get up to behind closed doors…
