Sinopse

The Beale Papers is a captivating collection of papers attributed to an anonymous author, positing a tantalizing mystery surrounding a treasure buried in the early 19th century. The narrative style is epistolary, featuring letters and coded messages that invite readers into a complex puzzle of encryption and lore. Emerging from the rich tapestry of American folk legends, the text weaves historical elements with cryptographic intrigue, challenging scholars and enthusiasts alike to decode the supposed fortune hidden in the Virginia countryside. The work reflects themes of greed, adventure, and the American Dream, all while remaining shrouded in ambiguity due to the anonymity of its creator. The anonymous author of The Beale Papers remains a subject of speculation, heightening the intrigue surrounding the narrative. Possibly inspired by the burgeoning treasure-hunting culture of the 19th century and the fascination with codes bolstered by the era's developments in communication, the author crafted a work that blends myth with reality. The manuscript's historical context places it at a time when legends of lost treasure were ripe for exploitation, serving as a compelling testament to the pursuit of wealth and the lengths individuals will go to claim it. If we hope to share our planet successfully with one another and the AI systems we are creating, we must reflect on who we are, how we got here, and where we are heading. The Importance of Being Educable puts forward a provocative new exploration of the extraordinary facility of humans to absorb and apply knowledge. The remarkable "educability" of the human brain can be understood as an information processing ability. It sets our species apart, enables the civilization we have, and gives us the power and potential to set our planet on a steady course. While we can readily absorb systems of thought about worlds of experience beyond our own, we struggle to judge correctly what information we should trust.

In this visionary book, Leslie Valiant argues that understanding the nature of our own educability is crucial to safeguarding our future. After breaking down how we process information to learn and apply knowledge, and drawing comparisons with other animals and AI systems, he explains why education should be humankind's central preoccupation.

Will the unique capability that has been so foundational to our achievements and civilization continue to drive our progress, or will we fall victim to our vulnerabilities? If we want to protect our collective future, we must better understand and prioritize the importance of being educable.

During a bus ride with a group of fellow college students, Jenny Booth Potter came to a life-changing realization. She decided that racism in all its forms—in policies and systems, in organizations and churches, in neighborhoods and families—could no longer be tolerated. And even though Jenny didn't know what to do about racism, she was certain of one thing: doing nothing is no longer an option. That declaration Jenny made to her peers was more than seven words uttered on a bus. It was a vow, a lifetime commitment to seek racial justice.

With candor and humility, Jenny shares her very imperfect but relentless journey of growing in awareness of racism, of reckoning with her own white privilege, and of learning how to be an antiracism advocate alongside her young family. If you're anything like Jenny was on that bus—overwhelmed by the enormity of racism and compelled to do something, but uncertain if you can actually make any difference—then this book is for you. Join Jenny and see for yourself what everyday antiracism looks like.

    Procopius

The Secret History, written by the sixth-century Byzantine historian Procopius, is one of the most extraordinary and scandalous documents to have survived from the early Byzantine period.

Procopius, the leading official historian of his time, lived during the testing and indulgent time of Emperor Justinian the Great and wrote the official records of the successful wars and the grand building projects of his ruler. These were words of aggrandisement. But covertly, Procopius kept a very different record: The Secret History, a vivid, salacious and detailed account of the outrageous behaviour of Justinian and his wife, Theodora, and the equally corrupt, licentious and cruel members of the court and administration of the time.

Secrecy was a necessary precaution for Procopius to prevent a painful and untimely death, for Justinian emerges as a grasping, ruthless and unprincipled ruler who would do anything to increase his wealth and power and who would not brook opposition on any level. No-one was safe around him - he was on a par with the worst Emperors of Rome such as Caligula. Theodora was no better - Procopius portrays her as a vulgar woman of insatiable sexual appetite given to scandalous displays and equally ready to kill to satisfy her desires. Not even Belisarius, the outstanding general of the time, was free from criticism: he is shown to be in thrall to his wife, Antonina, also a woman of wild habits, keen to pursue any person or object which appealed to her without let or hindrance.

This was a time, Procopius shows, when no-one in the great capital of Constantinople was safe, a time when the rule of law could be subsumed at any time according to the whim of those in power. James Cameron Stewart reads the unabridged anonymous translation published in 1896 by The Athenian Society.

The Unbearable Frenchness of Being: Albert Camus's Expensive Depression for Beginners
Finally, a philosophy book that admits what we're all thinking: Camus was basically a very attractive man who turned "nothing matters" into a career.
Ever wondered why your college roommate won't shut up about The Stranger? Curious about why French intellectuals spent the 1950s chain-smoking and arguing about whether you should kill yourself? Want to sound smart at dinner parties without actually reading 800 pages of dense existential philosophy?
Welcome to the only Camus guide you'll ever need and the only one honest enough to admit that "imagine Sisyphus happy" is either profound wisdom or the philosophical equivalent of "good vibes only."
    Inside, you'll discover:
Why Meursault shooting someone because the sun was too bright is apparently literature
How Camus wrote 300 pages about plague and somehow made mass death boring
The most pretentious friendship breakup in philosophy history (Camus vs. Sartre: now with 100% more formal French pronouns)
Why the Mediterranean is the answer to existential dread (spoiler: it's not, but the beaches are nice)
How to be an absurd hero in four easy steps (Step 3: Feel superior to everyone who hasn't read Camus)
The philosophical question of whether you should kill yourself (fun guy at parties!)
    Perfect for:
Philosophy students who need to understand Camus but can't stay awake through the actual texts
Former philosophy students still traumatized by Being and Nothingness
Anyone who's ever pretended to have read The Stranger in its entirety
People who enjoy their existential crises with a side of sarcasm
Listeners who think "nothing matters" but still want to feel intellectually superior about it
This isn't your professor's philosophy textbook.
