Sinopsis

In "A Guide to Natural Bridges National Monument, Utah," the author, shrouded in anonymity, offers an insightful and comprehensive exploration of one of America'Äôs most remarkable geological wonders. This guide marries scholarly rigor with accessible language, presenting a tapestry of natural history, cultural heritage, and environmental significance. The book not only navigates the formations of the monumental bridges but also delves into the rich tapestry of landscapes and ecosystems that define the region, all while drawing upon recent geological studies and Native American histories, thereby situating the reader within a broader literary and natural context. The choice to remain anonymous adds an intriguing layer to the work, suggesting that the author perhaps seeks to prioritize the message over personal recognition. Likely a result of extensive field study and a deep appreciation for conservation, the author's expertise brings credibility to their passion for natural history. The guide reflects an awareness of the pressing need for sustainable tourism and ecological preservation, themes that resonate deeply in contemporary environmental discourse. This book is a must-read for nature enthusiasts, travelers, and scholars alike. It serves not only as a practical guide but also as an urgent call to appreciate and protect the breathtaking beauty of Natural Bridges National Monument. Readers will find themselves inspired to explore this stunning landscape, armed with knowledge that enhances each step of their journey.

Come along on an informative, whirlwind tour of urban species and discover that you are surrounded by wild nature, even in your own backyard.

When biologist Hanna Bjørgaas spots a fairy cup lichen in Antarctica, she is surprised to recognize it from her own backyard in Oslo. When she returns home, she embarks on a journey into urban nature, visiting city parks, cemeteries, and concrete rooftops to investigate the species that live in urban spaces. Along the way, she meets corvids, songbirds, ants, pigeons, bats, sparrows, fungi, and linden trees—and the experts who study their surprising abilities to survive, and thrive, in the city.

As Bjørgaas discovers, urban nature—and its unique mixture of species that have never lived together before in Earth's history—is valuable. More than half of the world's human population lives in densely populated areas—and plants and animals have followed us into cities. Secret Life of the City invites us to pay more attention to the sounds, sights, and smells of urban nature right outside our door.

A treasure trove of fascinating flora and fauna, this wonderful book offers a plea to save our city plants, animals, and fungi before we lose them, too.

For any sailor, in a yacht or motorboat, the passage from one place to another is relatively easy, particularly with modern navigation equipment. What can be more of a challenge (and a potential source of anxiety for skipper and crew) is the start and end of a passage – how to leave and arrive safely, particularly if it's a cramped marina or crowded anchorage. In Illustrated Seamanship, Ivar Dedekam takes you through the techniques required to achieve a safe departure and arrival. Starting with the fundamentals of ropework he then moves on to manoeuvring, berthing, making fast and then leaving. All types of berthing are covered from coming alongside, stern to, bow to, between finger pontoons and using piles and buoys. There is advice about dealing with different wind and current directions as well as using springs. Ivar then turns to anchoring and offers guidance on setting and weighing anchor in many different circumstances: under sail and under power, using one or two anchors and coping with changes in wind and tide while anchored. You probably won't experience all the scenarios that Ivar so carefully describes, but you will certainly come across quite a few. Knowing what to do when a new situation comes up could be invaluable, increasing your confidence and leading to greater enjoyment and use of your boat. With over 500 diagrams, this slim volume is a perfect reminder of frequently used techniques and could be your get-out-of-jail card when a new circumstance arises. This new edition has an improved layout and the eBook's functionality has been improved significantly.

Life histories can be defined as the means by which individuals (or more precisely genotypes) vary their age—or stage-specific expenditures of reproductive effort in response to genetic, phenotypic, and environmental correlates of survival and fecundity. Life histories reflect the expression of traits most closely related to individual fitness, such as age and size at maturity, number and size of offspring, and the timing of the expression of those traits throughout an individual's life. Life-history research plays an integral role in species conservation and management.

This accessible primer encompasses the basic concepts, theories, and applied elements of life history evolution, including patterns of trait variability, underlying mechanisms of plastic/evolutionary change, and the practical utility of life-history traits as metrics of species/population recovery, sustainable exploitation, and risk of extinction.

A Primer of Life Histories is designed for listeners from a broad range of academic backgrounds and experience, including graduate students and researchers of ecology and evolutionary biology. It will also be useful to a more applied audience of academic/government researchers in fields such as wildlife biology, conservation biology, fisheries science, and the environmental sciences.

In Shared Voices, author and entrepreneur Heidi Raines shows how to systematically ensure the safety of patients and staff at healthcare facilities. Most medical errors occur because of flawed systems, not reckless practitioners, and systems can learn from errors. A just culture of care that protects everyone is possible through a framework of near-miss and incident reporting, equitable follow-up, analysis, and learning. Heidi, the founder and CEO of Performance Health Partners, has dedicated her career to designing solutions for healthcare organizations in need of knowledge and technology to deliver safe, equitable, and quality care. In this book, she argues that the way to foster more safety in healthcare facilities is to create organizational structures centered around reporting incidents and near-misses, then use systems thinking to resolve and prevent issues. And the best path to do this is to give voices to all healthcare workers by encouraging them to speak out and report observations about their work. Active staff engagement not only keeps patients and employees safe, but it also combats burnout and turnover. As points of care grow and training levels vary, it is paramount for healthcare leaders to establish a framework that sets caregivers up for success at every level and in every type of healthcare organization. Modernization may seem labored at first, but its longer-term results—including overall reduction in serious safety events, and the saving of lives—are ultimately the drivers of innovation. Shared Voices is Heidi Raines’ latest contribution to the world of healthcare patient and employee safety. She holds a Preceptor Faculty position at Tulane University’s Master of Health Administration program and serves as Board President of the American College of Healthcare Executives Women’s Healthcare Executive Network. Raines has received awards for innovation and executive leadership and was named one of the Top 100 Influential Entrepreneurs in Technology.
