In this 458th issue of the Baba Indaba’s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the classic fairy tale - "The Story of Bluebeard”.

ONCE, UPON A TIME, a long, long time ago and far, far away in France lived a wealthy nobleman named Bluebeard. He is wealthy and powerful, yet frighteningly ugly, nobleman who has been married several times to beautiful women who have all mysteriously vanished. When Bluebeard visits his neighbour and asks to marry one of his daughters, the girls are terrified. After hosting a wonderful banquet, he chooses the youngest daughter to be his wife - against her will - and she goes to live with him in his rich and luxurious palace in the countryside, away from her family.

Bluebeard announces that he must leave for the country and gives the keys of the château (castle) to his wife. She is able to open any door in the house with them, each of which contain some of his riches, except for an underground chamber that he strictly forbids her to enter lest she suffer his wrath. He then goes away and leaves the house and the keys in her hands. She invites her sister, Anne, and her friends and cousins over for a party. However, she is eventually overcome with the desire to see what the forbidden room holds, and she sneaks away from the party and ventures into the room.

What happened next you ask…? Did Bluebeard know that she had opened the forbidden door? What happened to the beautiful, young wife? Will she, too, mysteriously disappear? To find the answers to these questions, and others you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out!

“Miéville, known for his genre-defying fantasy novels for adults, makes a splash with his picture book debut . . . a subversive delight.” —School Library Journal Two sisters sit down one morning and begin describing all of the really gross things that were in the worst breakfast they ever had, until all they can picture is a table piled sky-high with the weirdest, yuckiest, slimiest, slickest, stinkiest breakfast possible. And then they have the best breakfast ever . . . almost.A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2016A Mississippi Clarion-Ledger Bestseller “This is a child’s imagination come to life, where a good thing can be the greatest thing in existence and a minor inconvenience snowballs into the most horrendous, atrocious, appalling, not good, very bad meal you’ve ever had.” —San Francisco Book Review “Miéville and Smith’s dialogue is fantastic: witty, smart, with great rhythm that doesn’t sacrifice artful turns of phrase to reach for an internal rhyme . . . A brilliant, original, infinitely rereadable book that can sit alongside Sendak and Dahl.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Miéville lets it rip in this stomping, howling rant about a bad meal of legendary proportions.” —Publishers Weekly “Imaginative and fun, The Worst Breakfast is perfect for any picky eater out there. A rhyming scheme and inventive text kept up the giggles and the pace.” —100 Pages a Day “Deftly written by the exceptionally talented China Miéville and shockingly but gifted illustrated by Zak Smith, The Worst Breakfast is a unique picture book that will be enduringly popular . . . Santa Claus spreads holiday cheer to a hard-working librarian on Christmas Eve in this humorous take on the children’s classic. Due to low staffing, a librarian must spend her Christmas Eve stacking the shelves at a library in desperate need of renovations. After the strain of a long night that has left her feeling “like Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol,” she is pleasantly surprised to see Santa and his six elves coming to her rescue in a red bookmobile. In this delightful retelling of Clement C. Moore’s classic, Santa signs Newbery winners and starred Caldecotts and stocks the library shelves with Hawthorne, Steinbeck, Millay, and Hemingway. After reading to the children and drinking some hot chocolate, Santa puts his elves to work replacing the rugs, fixing leaks, and organizing gifts according to the Dewey decimal system. As he leaves, Santa pays overdue fees and booms, “Do one more good deed. Have a real merry Christmas—teach someone to read!” Praise for Librarian’s Night Before Christmas“Santa is appropriately jolly and the elves, exuberant. A library cat and mouse contribute to the antics.” —School Library Journal“This volume will definitely find a place in the hearts of librarians and library lovers.” —Review of Texas Books
