By a mother and daughter duo: “a  bit of a  ‘learn to sew’  book for children . . .  provide[s] ample inspiration without intimidation for young crafters” (Publishers Weekly).   This collection of 18 skill-building projects teaches children with no sewing experience how to sew their very own cuddly pals. From sewing on buttons to putting in zippers, this guide walks kids step-by-step through various skill levels. They will learn to embroider, turn corners, and make curves with these fun designs. Multiple examples of each project encourage them to explore ideas. Featuring shapes, critters, and monsters that appeal to kids’ imagination, the projects build on skills and develop creativity.   “Written for children by Wendi and her daughter Jo . . . a book of sewing basics focusing on creating fun stuffed creatures, and it’s suitable for new or experienced sewists ages 9 and up. It’s kid-tested and approved, because all of the sewing was done by 11-year-old Jo and her friends . . . With Christmas coming, I can’t think of a more perfect book for kids and grown-ups alike. There is just so much cuteness that needs to be stitched and gifted!”—Wild Olive Blog

In this young adult horror novel, a girl staying on a remote island suspects the tiny Victoria-era dolls in her family’s old mansion are up to murder.

When her best friend dies under mysterious circumstances, Sophie sets off to stay with her cousins on the remote Isle of Skye. It’s been years since she last saw them—brooding Cameron with his scarred hand; Piper, who seems too perfect to be real; and peculiar little Lilias with her fear of bones. Still, Sophie never expected the strange new rules the family now lives by: Make no mention of Cameron’s accident. Never leave the front gate unlocked. Above all, don’t speak of the girl who’s no longer there, the sister whose death might have closer ties to Sophie’s past—and more sinister consequences for her future—than she ever knew.

A wondrously haunting and modern thriller, Frozen Charlotte drips with mystery and madness, secrets and survival, and the chilling sense that the impossible might be all too real.

Journey Home is the story of Tamara Woodson, who lives in the American West in the 1880s. She is smart and sassy, and has a mind of her own. Like many black families of that era following slavery, her family traveled west and founded their own town.   Tamara Woodson is at a turning point in her life. She begins a journey of self-discovery that reveals important connections to her ancestral past. Prompted by her ambitions and experiences, she prepares herself for an uncertain future.   At one point, Tamara’s fears are expressed in a dream that intertwines a Nigerian Yoruba folktale. She learns to interpret important symbols. At another, Tamara learns about the Apache Indian culture from a girl who is preparing for her own elaborate coming of age ceremony. Exposure to these two cultures helps Tamara validate the values and traditions of others as well as her own. As she matures, Tamara learns to let go of her own fears and to rely on her inner strength.  Journey Home is book one in the juvenile historical fiction series, “Passage to Womanhood.”

A reluctant young hero must chase down an evil serpent king in “this satisfying middle-grade adventure . . . in colonial British West Africa” (Kirkus Reviews).   Nate Fludd is back in the camel saddle in pursuit of a missing, deadly basilisk—the mythical King of Serpents. As if saving a Dhughani village from the beast isn’t hard enough, Nate and Aunt Phil must begin to solve the mystery of his parents’ disappearance and protect The Fludd Book of Beasts from a sinister man who always seems to be one step ahead of them.   With more lively illustrations by Kelly Murphy, The Basilisk’s Lair picks up immediately where the first book in the series, Flight of the Phoenix, left off.
