Sinopse

In 'Heedless Hetty', Annette Lyster weaves a richly textured narrative that explores the tumultuous realities of early 20th-century life through the lens of its eponymous protagonist. With a keen eye for detail, Lyster employs a blend of lyrical prose and vivid imagery, encapsulating Hetty's chaotic journey as she grapples with societal expectations, personal ambitions, and the elusive nature of self-discovery. The novel is marked by its poignant exploration of themes such as gender, class, and the complexities of human relationships, situating it within a broader literary context of feminist literature that emerged in the wake of modernist shifts in storytelling and character development. Annette Lyster, a seasoned writer and scholar, draws upon her own experiences and the historical background of early 20th-century Europe to craft this compelling narrative. Her academic familiarity with feminist discourse and cultural history informs her nuanced portrayal of Hetty, allowing for a profound understanding of the societal constraints that shaped women's lives during this transformative period. Lyster's insights are illuminated by her dedication to amplifying underrepresented voices, which resonated deeply in her creation of Hetty's character. 'Heedless Hetty' is an essential read for those interested in the intersections of gender and identity within historical fiction. Lyster's engaging style and thought-provoking themes invite readers to reflect on the intricacies of autonomy and the societal pressures faced by women, making this novel a vital addition to contemporary discussions surrounding feminism and literature. You are encouraged to delve into Hetty's compelling world and engage with the questions it raises about personal freedom and societal constraints.

Robert Louis Stevenson was a Scottish novelist, essayist, poet and travel writer. Born and educated in Edinburgh, Stevenson suffered from serious bronchial trouble for much of his life, but continued to write prolifically and travel widely in defiance of his poor health. As a young man, he mixed in London literary circles, receiving encouragement from Andrew Lang, Edmund Gosse, Leslie Stephen and W. E. Henley, the last of whom may have provided the model for Long John Silver in Treasure Island.

'A Dream of Life', is unfinished but there is enough extant to let us know where Lawrence was going in this story. He begins by looking back and bemoaning what has become of his generation, under the thumb of women and lacking the spark of his father's mining friends. Then in a scene reminiscent of 'Pilgrim's Progress' he travels forward in time and sees his village in the distant future. The people are living in an idealised commune but do they have the spark of life?

George Birch, undertaker for the New England town of Peck Valley, finds himself trapped in the vault where coffins are stored during winter for burial in the spring. When Birch stacks the coffins to reach a transom window, his feet break through the lid of the top coffin, injuring his ankles and forcing him to crawl out of the vault. Later, Dr. Davis investigates the vault, and finds that the top coffin was one of inferior workmanship, which Birch used as a repository for Asaph Sawyer, a vindictive citizen whom Birch had disliked, even though the coffin had originally been built for the much shorter Matthew Fenner. Davis finds that Birch had cut off Sawyer's feet in order to fit the body into the coffin, and the wounds in Birch's ankles are actually teeth marks.
