An homage to the childhood genius of Black science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler.

The figure of the horse, at once earthly and transcendent, represented the contradictions of freedom and captivity that enabled young Octavia to develop her nuanced sense of voice and place. Drawing on previously unknown archival research, this volume illustrates how Butler's development as a writer was tied to her extraordinary resourcefulness and self-awareness growing up as an awkward, bookish Black girl in segregated, Cold War Pasadena. She persistently re-visited and revised her early writings on teenage angst, Martians, Westerns, and racial politics. In one way or another her supernatural characters defied the constraints of gender, race, and class with equine-inflected resilience.

In the spirit of Butler's passion for library research, this book is comprised of twenty-six short A-Z chapters. It is part childhood biography, art and literary analysis, and memoir. It interweaves the author's personal recollections with scholarly musings on poetry, film, and literature inspired by Butler's encyclopedic reading habits and experiments with genre. Just as cross-species kinships are at the heart of her Afro-futurist, eco-feminist storytelling, Butler demonstrates that coming-of-age is an ongoing process and key to healing our damaged planet.

Suicides, hangings, shootings, car accidents, drownings, cliff falls, electrocutions …
Detective Peter Seymour has seen every type of death imaginable in his time in the NSW Coroner’s Court and, after many years in law enforcement, the tragedies are beginning to take their toll.
Dealing with death day in day out becomes too much for Seymour and this seasoned veteran starts to grapple with overwhelming feelings of fear and doubt. He decides to return to the police force hoping the operational work might offer some reprieve. Fate would have it otherwise as he is thrust straight back into an intense murder investigation.
One Friday night in the year 2000, Nick Hanes is heading home after a night out with his mates. Barely two-hundred and fifty metres from his home, he is set upon by two men. Bashed, beaten then murdered, Hanes dies after a senseless and random attack.
Seymour is called to the St Mary’s crime scene. He examines the body and discovers that there a very few clues and no leads, no witnesses. As the case unravels it takes every bit of his experience, tenacity and determination to not only discover the identity of the perpetrators but to also deal with his own demons that are beginning to spiral out of control.
Bashed and Beaten tells the true story of two men embarking on dangerous paths. One man finds himself the victim of a violent crime, the other searching for justice for the dead man’s family as he struggles with his own battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, the result of a life spent give his all for others. Both paths are intertwined, and there is no turning back.

    The Magic of My Youth

A charming, quirky memoir from British author Arthur Calder-Marshall, recalling his youth in 1920s England. The title needs to be taken quite literally as much of the narrative revolves around the shadowy figure of occultist Aleister Crowley, at the height of his dubious powers during this era.

As boys growing up in a small country town Arthur and his brother befriend an eccentric poet, whom they dub Vicky Bird – in fact a fairly well-known literary figure called Victor Neuberg. He is haunted by some romantic tragedy in his past, in which Crowley may be implicated. When Arthur goes up to Oxford Vicky Bird connects him with circles who dabble in the supernatural.

In London, Arthur graduates towards the epicentre of Bohemian literary life in the pubs of Fitzrovia. Here he meets the femme fatale Betty May, who blames Crowley for the death of her husband, and tells fantastic tales of satanism in Sicily. At last Arthur encounters the man himself, in a dingy café…

This is a wonderful tale of English eccentrics, told with deadpan British humour. Calder-Marshall pokes fun at his own youthful preoccupations, but nonetheless a sinister, menacing edge lingers. Bizarre, droll, and threaded with the melancholia of a generation who only just escaped the devastation of World War I, it is sure to delight the modern reader.

'The delicate art of autobiography is one to which the English bring a particular talent. It’s good to know The Magic of My Youth will be available once more, as it deserves to be’ - Michael Holroyd, biographer - neglected.books.com.

‘His own memoir, The Magic of My Youth, does little to solve the mystery of Calder-Marshall, coded as it is in a dizzying and fantastical tale about a young Oxford student in search of occultist Aleister Crowley, a wanton influence on the writer’s formative years. It is a lavish and delirious read for anyone interested in experiencing fashionable Bloomsbury in the 1920s, the perfect complement to Evelyn Waugh’s Vile Bodies’ – The Guardian

‘Absolutely charming - Arthur Calder-Marshall wrote lovely prose full of insight and wit’ – Goodreads

Pageboy is a raw and powerful memoir about truth, transformation, and the courage it takes to reclaim your voice in a world that demands silence. In this deeply personal journey, the author shares what it means to grow up trapped in a body that doesn't feel like home, to rise to fame while hiding your true identity, and to finally choose authenticity over performance.

With lyrical honesty and unflinching vulnerability, this story explores the complexities of gender, fame, and self-worth. It's a celebration of becoming—of stepping into your truth even when it terrifies you. From the pain of invisibility to the joy of transition and the strength of visibility, Pageboy invites listeners to reconsider everything they thought they knew about identity, love, and freedom.
