Synopsis

In the dazzling world of 1893 New York City, where gilded mansions conceal simmering unrest, Genevieve Beaumont, the "Pale Wallflower," leads a double life.  By day, she's the dutiful daughter of ruthless railroad tycoon Magnus Beaumont, navigating the stifling expectations of high society. By night, fueled by her grandmother's suffragist journals, she transforms into a brilliant saboteur, wielding her secret passion for clockwork mechanics to dismantle her father's empire piece by piece.Delayed shipments, mysteriously malfunctioning machinery, whispers of dissent among the workers—Genevieve's subtle acts of defiance escalate, drawing the attention of both allies and enemies.  Sharp-tongued journalist Iris Finch, hungry for a story that will make her mark, becomes Genevieve's confidante and accomplice, their words fanning the flames of unrest.  Meanwhile, Pinkerton detective Jasper Reed, as cold and calculating as the steel tracks he protects, is tasked with uncovering the saboteur, finding himself increasingly drawn to the puzzle—and the intoxicating scent of lilies and machine oil—that is Genevieve Beaumont. As Genevieve is pulled deeper into the fight for workers' rights alongside charismatic labor organizer Elias Vance, she must choose between loyalty to her family and her unwavering commitment to justice.  With Jasper closing in and her father sensing betrayal, the walls of her double life begin to crumble.  In a climactic confrontation during a lavish Beaumont ball, Genevieve orchestrates her most daring act of sabotage yet, a public declaration of defiance that will irrevocably change the course of her life and ignite the fires of a revolution.  But at what cost?

Hewey Calloway had intended to pass straight through Durango, Colorado, en route to visit a friend several miles northeast of the city. He had left his home range about a year before, with a herd of young horses. It was supposed to be a relatively straightforward affair; deliver the horses, collect the payment, and return home with the money. Things got out of hand, however, and there he was in Durango a year later with plans to go north rather than south. Oh, well, he thought, he had always wanted to see new country.

It isn't long before his travels lead him to a cabin on a rainy night. There he meets a young man, sick as a dog, who weakly tries to send him off. And for good reason: the man has smallpox, and soon enough, Hewey catches the deadly disease. The man cares for him in turn, and it's just as he is feeling better that the man disappears. The next morning a Pinkerton detective turns up with posse, looking for a wanted bank robber.

As he travels north, Hewey seems to run in with both the young man who tended to him, as well as the detective. But something seems off about the Pinkerton detective, and Hewey keeps his mouth shut. When he reunites with his friend Hanley, they do everything they can to get to the bottom of the mystery that threatens both theirs and this young man's life.

Taking the reader from Victoria's wild shipwreck coast to the artists' studios of revolutionary Paris and the bloody battlefields of Flanders, this sweeping novel reimagines the volatile history of the beautiful and enigmatic young woman immortalised in one of Australia's most iconic paintings. Created in Paris in 1875, Chloé, Jules Lefebvre's depiction of a naked water nymph, was brought to Melbourne's Young & Jackson Hotel in 1909, where it has hung ever since. In this passionate, luminous retelling, Katrina Kell seeks to unlock the riddle behind the girl on the canvas, known to history only as Marie. In doing so, she weaves the compelling story of an incandescent spirit - a woman with the strength to defy the boundaries of class and convention in order to survive, and an enduring power to influence the lives of others across time and distance.
