WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO COUNT? WHY ARE HUMANS THE ONLY SPECIES ON EARTH THAT CAN DO IT? WHERE DID COUNTING COME FROM? HOW HAS IT SHAPED SOCIETIES ALONG THE WAY? AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Counting is an innovative, erudite, world-wrapping journey through humanity’s marvellous ability to impose numbers on things. Acclaimed historian and mathematician Benjamin Wardhaugh draws on stories from the Stone Age to cyberspace in pursuit of the elusive, fascinating, endlessly diverse history of human counting.
Starting with the roots of counting in human brains, bodies and environments, Wardhaugh tours us around the world and through time while exploring the different flavours of counting that have developed over millennia. We meet the makers of bead necklaces in ancient South Africa, the inventors of writing in the world ’ s first metropolis, and the ‘counter culture’ of classical Athens. We see counting used – and changed – by Indian scholars, Chinese peasants and Papuan shopkeepers; we meet the distinctive numerate agendas of Mayan kings, US governments and Korean vloggers.
Weaving these stories together, Wardhaugh shows how cultures have shaped counting, and how counting has shaped culture, in a rich tapestry spanning thousands of years. This is the vast story of human attempts to find some order in an unruly world; or, perhaps, to impose on a reluctant world the order that humans find within themselves. It is a history as wide, deep and tangled as that of humanity itself
This best non-fiction book by Wardhaugh is a deep dive into the philosophy and technology behind counting. His teaching style and comprehensive study of mathematics make this book a standout in its genre.
For fans of David Spiegelhalter (The Art of Uncertainty), Cat Bohannon (Eve), Rory Stewart (The Marches), Anne Applebaum (Autocracy, Inc), and Peter Frankopan (The New Silk Roads).

This audiobook is a study guide to prepare for the Respirator Fit Test CNC method exam. It presents more than hundred questions and answers relating to human respiratory system and defence mechanisms, health effects of airborne contaminants, respiratory hazards in the workplace, general respiratory fit testing and respiratory selection requirements, and a sample script to prepare for the submission of a video demonstrating respiratory fit testing by the CNC (Condensation Nuclei Counter) method.
Respirator fit testing is a process used to determine whether a particular respiratory protective equipment (RPE) fits an individual properly and provides an adequate seal to protect against hazardous substances. Fit testing is required for tight-fitting respirators, from disposable filtering facepieces to reusable full-face respirators, including some respirators that typically operate in positive pressure mode.
There are several methods that can be used for respirator fit testing, including the CNC (Condensation Nuclei Counter) method. The CNC method involves measuring the particulate concentration inside the respirator while the user is wearing it and performing a series of exercises or movements to simulate the physical demands of the job. If the ratio between the air concentration inside the respirator and outside of the respirator meets the respiratory protection standard it is considered to have a good fit.
To prepare for the RESP-FIT CNC method exam, this book provides the listener the principles and procedures of respirator fit testing, including the CNC method. This includes excerpts from Australian and International Standards and guidelines and learning about the various types of RPE and their specific fit testing requirements. The listener should also become familiar with the equipment and procedures used in fit testing, as well as the potential risks and limitations of the CNC method.

An introduction to the basics of blockchain technology.
Are you confused by the blockchain?
Do you know what it is and how it works?
Do you want to know how it can change the world?
Then, you’ve chosen the right book.
Blockchain technology is not new. In fact, it was introduced in 2009 with the Bitcoin cryptocurrency, but since then, things have moved on at a significant pace. These days, many industries are developing their own blockchain-based solutions, looking to replace their existing database and record-keeping systems with one that works faster and is far more secure.
In this book, you will learn:What blockchain isHow blockchain works – a brief overview and a more technical lookThe history of blockchain technology and BitcoinThe advantages and disadvantages of blockchain technologyHow blockchain works with the financial industryHow it works with other industriesHow decentralized apps and smart contracts workWhat the proof-of-work concept is and how it worksThe current and future use cases for the blockchainWhat Ripple and the R3 consortium areAnd much more
The blockchain has already changed the world in so many ways, and most of us aren’t even aware that the systems we’ve used every day have changed. Not every blockchain is decentralized; some still have a centralized intermediary. Not every blockchain is open-source. Banks, governments, and financial institutions are all maintaining control but in a more open, secure way that is far less open to fraud than previous financial transaction systems.

Following on from the hugely popular Treasury of Folklore: Seasand Rivers and Woodlands and Forests comes Treasury of Folklore: Stars and Skies, an exploration of the mysteries of the stars, skies and heavens above.
People have gazed up at the same stars for millennia, trading stories about them; conjuring gods and goddesses; mapping the constellations; and navigating the complex human world below. The tales, traditions and myths included here traverse countries and continents and have been chosen to highlight how humans are linked through time and place, with shared dreams, fears and ways of rationalising the unknown.
Under 'Stars and Heavens' Willow delves into rosy fingered dawn and the hubris of Icarus, the Greek myths surrounding the constellations and the omen of meteors, the trials of the Hawaiian goddess Hina and the legend of the rabbit in the moon. In the section on 'Skies' we are introduced to winged Pegasus and the Firebird, the Witch of Westray and stories of storms, the mysteries of the Northern Lights and unexplained UFOs.
Treasury of Folklore: Stars and Skies is a fascinating portal into a rich history of myths surrounding the sky, an aspect of the natural world that continues to fascinate and confound.
