Synopsis

When students are asked which subject is the most challenging, pharmacology always appears near the top of the list. The study of pharmacology demands that students apply knowledge from a wide variety of natural and applied sciences. Successfully predicting drug action requires a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and pathology. Lack of adequate pharmacology knowledge can result in immediate and direct harm to the patient; thus, the stakes in learning the subject are high.
Pharmacology cannot be made easy, but it can be made understandable when the proper connections are made to knowledge learned in these other disciplines. The vast majority of drugs in clinical practice are prescribed for specific diseases, yet many pharmacology textbooks fail to recognize the complex interrelationships between pharmacology and pathophysiology.
This book –Pharmacology is the product of teaching undergraduates the principles of pharmacology over the last many years. This book – Pharmacology has been organized to provide a logical continuum of information relating to drugs, beginning with the inevitable historical discovery of drugs in food. With this background, important pharmacological principles will be considered relating to drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination.  In essence, the emphasis is placed upon pharmacokinetic aspects of drug action. Having gained access to the body, how do drugs produce an effect and how can the effect be quantified for comparative purposes?

2019 closed a decade smoothly in most countries, but an unexpected complication that would change people’s lives worldwide, was slowly brewing. By November, a new virus, similar to many we have faced before, yet hitting harder than many would expect, began to spread across China. By January, the numbers the large country faced were alarming, and the first cases began to appear in far-away countries. By March, things had gotten so out of hand, there were half a million reported cases worldwide, with numbers increasing at an uncontrollable rate in many countries that underestimated the virus’ potential, costing the lives of many individuals. This sudden change in people’s lifestyles (which happened from one day to the next for many), meant a huge, unexpected need for adjustment that pretty much left them with their heads spinning.

In today’s hyper-connected world, privacy is often taken for granted—or worse, dismissed as an outdated concern. We live in an era where our personal data is treated as currency, constantly collected, analyzed, and monetized by corporations, governments, and cybercriminals alike. Every search query, online purchase, and social media interaction contributes to a vast digital profile that shapes how businesses market to us, how financial institutions assess us, and even how law enforcement monitors us. But how much do we really understand about who is collecting our data and for what purpose?

Most people assume that their digital activities are relatively private—secured by passwords, encryption, and privacy settings. Yet, the reality is far more unsettling. Companies track our browsing habits even when we’re in “incognito” mode, apps request permissions far beyond what’s necessary, and smart devices listen in on conversations, all in the name of “improving user experience.” Governments worldwide deploy mass surveillance programs under the justification of national security, while hackers exploit weak security measures to access personal and financial information. Even when we willingly share details about our lives, such as through social media, we rarely consider the long-term consequences of this exposure.

Perhaps the most alarming aspect of digital privacy erosion is how seamlessly it has integrated into our daily lives. From social media giants like Facebook and TikTok to search engines like Google, nearly every digital service we rely on operates under a business model that thrives on harvesting user data. The more these companies know about us—our habits, preferences, and even emotions—the better they can predict and manipulate our behavior. This is the foundation of surveillance capitalism, an industry built on turning our personal lives into profit.

    ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK
"Predictably Irrational" by Dan Ariely explores the various ways in which human behavior deviates from rational decision-making. The book delves into how psychological factors, context, and biases often influence our choices more than logical considerations. It challenges the traditional economic view that people make decisions based on pure calculation, showing instead that our choices are frequently driven by emotions, perceptions, and subconscious influences.

The book examines concepts like relativity, our attraction to "free" items, the impact of social norms, and the power of expectations on how we perceive things. It further explores how keeping options open can be a drawback, and how the sense of ownership affects the value we assign to things. Ariely presents numerous experiments and real-life examples to demonstrate these irrational patterns in our daily lives. The book reveals that these patterns are not random but are, in fact, predictable.
