Sinopse

Let us pause for a moment, dear Reader: what would happen if that old crone, that shadow behind our backs, instead of arousing in us only panic and inconsolable sorrow, became the most demanding, though often invisible, teacher in our lives? What if every breath, even the shallowest one we take with such self-satisfaction, was nothing more than another lesson in this bizarre school called life, whose end – though so stubbornly repressed from our consciousness – is not at all a definitive conclusion, but rather an ironic beginning of a completely new way of looking at this chaotic spectacle in which we play the leading roles?
”Death, the Best Teacher of Life” is not a gloomy chronicle of dying; you won't find instructions for operating a coffin here, nor a guide on how to write a moving epitaph. This, my dear friend, is a guide to the art of living with a full awareness of its temporality. Together, we will consider how this constant awareness that everything, from the most passionate romance to the most delicious pizza, has its inexorable end, perversely changes our perception of every fleeting moment, every momentous decision, every spontaneous smile. But do not fear, we will not wallow in melancholic reflections on transience or feed ourselves with pessimistic visions. This book aims rather to nudge you, pull you out of the comfortable armchair of your illusions, take your hand, and with contagious lightness, seasoned with a pinch of dark humor, help you look at your own, often absurd, life from a completely new, surprisingly liberating perspective.
After all, this Death, though seemingly dark and unapproachable, is actually the most perfect, albeit somewhat macabre, mascot in this theater of human existence. Sometimes it smiles at us with ironic indulgence, other times it looks serious, as if grading our ”life” essay, and sometimes it even becomes grotesque in its unpredictable choices. But one thing is certain – there is nothing more absurd, more comically tragic, than a life lived without even a shadow of awareness of its inevitable end. And it is precisely this fundamental absurdity, this tightrope walk stretched over the abyss of nothingness, that is the beating heart of this story.
We wander then together – you, with your fears and hopes, I, as your guide through this strange territory, and that third one, always present, though often ignored – Death – through the funniest, most moving, and sometimes most embarrassing nooks and crannies of human existence, to discover that the greatest, most fundamental truths about life are not hidden in pompous phrases or lofty ideas. They are hidden in small, often underestimated gestures, in the laughter we can muster in the face of adversity, in those ordinary, everyday moments that, if we only stopped for a moment and noticed them, would have a value for us greater than any material wealth or ephemeral achievement.
So, prepare yourself for a lesson that will surprise you with its unconventional approach. Because this Death, our uninvited teacher, can not only teach but also entertain – and in a way you never, ever expected. And Antoni, whose adventures we will follow, will be our tragic and comical guide through this extraordinary, deadly school of life.

This isn’t a book about rockets.
    It’s about humanity.
In Mars, We Coming, the journey to another planet becomes something more than just science fiction or tech speculation — it becomes a mirror. A deeply personal, thought-provoking, first-person exploration of what it really means to leave Earth… and still be us.
From the silence of that first step on Martian soil to the invisible battles of the human mind in isolation, this book explores the dreams, fears, and fragile truths behind humanity’s greatest leap. It doesn’t just ask if we can go to Mars — it asks who we become if we do.

Who now remembers Hermann Röchling (1872-1955), an emblematic figure of German industry during the two world wars. A Nazi from the very beginning, he was one of the main protagonists of this sinister movement, alongside Albert Speer and Adolf Hitler. He did not shy away from any measure to support the National Socialist effort, and his power was such that the Americans referred to him as the “czar” of a regime that functioned on the backs of millions of enslaved workers.
A steel magnate and notorious anti-Semite, Hermann Röchling fell through the cracks of history. Margaret Manale is the first researcher to devote an exhaustive biography to him. She explains the reasons why such a character has remained almost unnoticed. She sheds light on the difficulty of judging him in the aftermath of the collapse of the Third Reich.
To put his personality into perspective, Manale goes back to the origins of the family in 1870 and the French defeat by Germany. For 170 years, the Röchlings played a major role in these successive conflicts and in particular in the struggle for control of the mines in Alsace-Lorraine. Herman Röchling was prosecuted and sentenced at Nuremberg for war crimes in 1946 but, under American pressure, he was pardoned in 1951 in order to revive Germany quickly and build a strong Europe in the face of the Soviet threat.
This shocking book is the implacable account of one man’s deception and the weight of realpolitik.

The bandwagon effect is a psychological phenomenon that occurs when people tend to align their opinions, behaviors, or preferences with the majority or popular opinion, often without critically evaluating the subject at hand. This effect is driven by the inherent desire to fit in, avoid conflict, and adhere to social norms. The term "bandwagon" originally emerged in the 19th century, with its roots in political campaigns where politicians would refer to a parade or vehicle that people would literally "jump onto" once it gained popularity. Over time, it evolved to describe the broader tendency to follow the crowd, especially in decision-making processes.
The bandwagon effect is grounded in the psychology of conformity, which has been extensively studied. Humans are social beings, and much of our behavior is influenced by the groups we belong to. From childhood, individuals learn to adopt behaviors and opinions based on what is seen as acceptable or desirable within their social circles. This need to belong can be so strong that individuals may forego independent thought in favor of adopting the views of others, even when these views may not align with their personal beliefs or values.
One of the primary drivers of the bandwagon effect is the desire for social approval. People often feel that aligning with popular opinion will grant them a sense of acceptance and belonging within a group. Additionally, there is a cognitive bias at play. When individuals perceive that a particular opinion or behavior is widely held, they may believe that it is correct or valid, simply because others hold it. This is closely related to the concept of social proof, where individuals look to others as a guide in uncertain situations. The more people who adopt a certain belief, the more likely others are to follow, creating a cycle of reinforcement.

It takes being tackled in the park to get Sarah out of her rut.

Although, Sarah wouldn't call it a rut. At 22 years old she's comfortable where she is in life - living with her dad, hanging out with her best friend, and working at the same job since she was 14 years old. Life has so much more to offer, but she's not interested in any hand-outs. Not even from her best friend Nina who is desperate to get her back on the dating scene. When Riak Royal attacks her in the park, Sarah finds herself more attracted to the tall, dark, and animalistic werewolf than she is afraid. With her dark purple eyes and disarming grin, Riak shakes up her life by claiming Sarah as her mate right then and there. Now instead of maybe rekindling something casual with her ex, Sarah has to figure out how Riak fits in her life no matter how commitment-phobic she is, because the alternative would be insanity.
With the help of Nina, and a whole lot of introspection, Sarah will find herself on a journey of self-discovery she never would have expected, while maybe falling in love with the werewolf she never asked for.

'Excellent... surefooted and perceptive, enlivened by a wealth of vignettes and anecdotes which bring to life the dramatic and frequently horrific events that have played a seminal role in forming Chinese society as it exists today' PHILIP SHORT, author of Mao: A Life

Mao launched the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution in 1966 to purge his critics and blood a new generation of fighters. Ten years later, almost two million people had been killed and much of China's heritage, from precious manuscripts to ancient temples, had been obliterated.

The shadow of these terrible years lies heavily over the twenty-first-century nation. The history of this period is so toxic that China's rulers have gone to great lengths to bury it – while a few brave men and women risk their freedom to uncover the truth. For as both they and the Party know, to grasp the history of the Cultural Revolution is to understand much about China today.

Bombard the Headquarters! is not just Mao's story. It's the unforgettable stories of countless individuals, mass manias, of sacred mangos, and spectacular falls from grace. At once rigorous and readable, brief yet teeming with colourful detail, this is a marvel of historical storytelling.

'A beautifully concise account that makes sense of a hugely complex event in modern Chinese history. Linda Jaivin puts her formidable, deep experience both of Chinese history and language to excellent use, conveying in 100 pages what most would struggle to achieve in a thousand' KERRY BROWN, author of China Incorporated
