Sinopsis

A police detective confronts a nurse with an unusual bedside manner and her chilling twin sister in Andrew Neiderman’s page-turning thriller Palm Springs detective Frankie Samuels is on medical leave when a rash of suspicious suicides rock his town. Against the advice of his doctor and his supervisor, he investigates the case of a grieving widower who died of insulin shock, overdosing on his wife’s meds, along with a sleep aid called Dilantin. But the police can’t find any Dilantin in the man’s medicine cabinet. The second victim, another surviving spouse, perishes from a lethal dose of chloral hydrate.   Private-duty nurse Faye Sullivan seems to be the common denominator in the deaths. But Faye has a sister: an identical twin named Susie, who also has a connection to the victims. As Samuels discovers more clues that don’t add up, his suspicion begins to fall decisively on the two women. But the truth is more terrifying—and deadly—than he can imagine.

A small-time art forger runs afoul of the New England mob in this comic crime novel from the author of The End of Vandalism: “One of our living masters” (McSweeney’s).   Paul Emmons has his faults—envy, lust, naiveté, money laundering, and art forgery to name a few. A fallen accountant and scamster, Emmons and his wife, Mary, are exiled abroad, though they enjoy inadvisable returns to New England to check on the property they own but cannot claim.   Paul’s unfortunate association with Carlo Record, president of the fraudulent company New England Amusements, was always destined to get him into trouble. When Carlo and his cronies—Ashtray Bob, Line-Item Vito, and Hatpin Henry—try to coerce Paul into stealing the John Singer Sargent painting “The Black Brook” from the Tate gallery in London, Paul and Mary hatch a plan to trick the tricksters . . .   Through it all, Paul searches for his true mission in life in this “irresistibly droll portrayal of an All-American liar, loser, and innocent” (Kirkus Reviews).  This Grove edition features a new introduction in the form of a conversation between Drury and Daniel Handler.

From #1 bestselling author Blake Pierce comes a new masterpiece of psychological suspense: Cause to Fear (An Avery Black Mystery—Book 4).
When a body turns up floating beneath the frozen Charles River, the Boston Police summons its most brilliant and controversial homicide detective—Avery Black—to close the case. It doesn’t take Avery long, however, to realize that this is no isolated murder: it is the work of a serial killer.
Other bodies begin to turn up, all of them sharing one thing in common: all are trapped in ice. Is it all a coincidence—or the signature of a particularly deranged killer?
As the media converges and Avery suffers pressure from her bosses, she struggles to crack the inexplicable case, too bizarre even for her brilliant mind. At the same time she tries to keep her own depression at bay, as her personal life spirals to a new low. And she does it all while trying to enter the mind of a psychotic and elusive killer.
What she will find will shock even her, and make her realizes that nothing is what it seems—and that the worst darkness may sometimes be closest to us.
A psychological thriller with heart-pounding suspense, Cause to Fear is book #4 in a riveting series—with a beloved new character—that will leave you turning pages late into the night.
