  John Donne was born on the 22nd January 1572 in London, into a Roman Catholic family when Catholicism was illegal in England, and there was turbulence and unrest with both state and church throughout much of Europe.  
   
  His father, also named John, died when he was four, and his mother, Elizabeth Haywood, married a wealthy widower, ensuring the family were looked after.  He received a good education at both Oxford and Cambridge but was unable to obtain a degree without taking the oath of supremacy, which as a Catholic he refused to do.  
   
  During the 1590s, Donne wrote a wide range of verses, including both erotic and sacred poems, creating two major volumes of work.  His strong vivacious and sensual style fusing intellect and passion, as well as inventive use of subtle argument and syntax, provided a new radical perspective that reached beyond his contemporaries, and continued to chime and charm poetry lovers throughout the ages.  
   
  Difficult to believe that with this enormous talent, Donne lived in poverty for many years, exacerbated by his secret marriage to Anne Moore, which meant no dowry, and they having twelve children.  Later he served in Parliament and became Dean of St Paul's in 1621, noted for his learned and charismatic sermons.  
   
  John Donne died in London on the 31st March 1631, but leaves an enormous legacy of many splendid influential poems.  He was known as the founder of the Metaphysical Movement and is widely regarded as one of Britain's best-loved poets.

  Stories to Share With My Partner...

  An anthology of stories can be a fun thing or a scary one. 
  Deciding what goes into an anthology can be daunting. Too much romance and some folks may decide it is ‘too mushy’. Put too much humour in, and others will say, ‘there is no substance’. Go with more science fiction, or fantasy, or horror, and you will have some folks just not pick up the book. 
  Finding the perfect ‘mix’ is a challenge for sure. 
  ‘Stories to Share with My Partner – Book 3’ presents what I hope is a good mix of stories and poetry to make everyone happy. 
  You have some love stories, ‘The Red Bug’ and the ‘The Coat’, for example, while science fiction is covered in ‘When the Future Arrives’ and ‘Coordinates’. 
  Funny stories are what I enjoy writing about, and there are few in this book. 
  ‘So That Is When the Fight Started’ is something many can relate too and in ‘Jerk’ I take a different approach to ‘superheroes’. 
  I hope you enjoy reading these as much as I did when I wrote them.

  John Clare was born on 13th July, 1793 in Helpston, a few miles north of Peterborough. 
  Schooled only until the age of 12 his early career was that of agricultural labourer, pot boy, gardener and lime burner.  His early life of hardship and frequent malnutrition led to his diminutive stature of five feet and contributed to his later health problems. 
  In 1820 his first poems were published and began to earn him a reputation as the “Northamptonshire Peasant Poet”. 
  His poetry sold well but only occasionally did that and other incomes keep his head above water.  Married with seven children the burden was huge and demanding.  Frequently penniless his health began to dissolve. 
  He last published in 1835 and by 1837 with his drinking out of control and his mental state shredded he entered a mental institution.  He was to reside in such unhappy places until his death. 
  He died aged 71 on 20th May 1864. His remains were returned to Helpston for burial in St Botolph’s churchyard. 
  Today he is considered one of the greatest of English poets.  His lyrical works on nature and the countryside earn him this just praise.

  The Eclogues and Georgics

  Though it is for the sparkling epic, Aeneid, that the Roman poet Virgil is best known, it was these two poems, The Eclogues and Georgics, which first established his reputation.  Cast in the tradition of pastoral poetry, The Eclogues were written between 41 BCE and 37 BCE when Virgil (Publius Vergilius Maro, to give him his full name) was in his thirties. The Eclogues (the word means ‘Selections’ in Greek) contain 10 poems, a combination of dialogues and monologues. They drew on the ‘bucolic’ (rural) style of the ancient Greek poet Theocritus (c 300BCE-c 260 BCE), but Virgil weaves many references to contemporary Roman events. Though The Eclogues have perhaps existed in the shadow of Georgics, they have been highly regarded and studied by academics and poets down the centuries. They are presented here in the 20th century translation by the British poet R. C. Trevelyan, and read in multi-voice format as they were originally written, with clearly delineated characters bringing the content to life with verve and temperament. 
  Though also pastoral in nature, Georgics is very different in style. Published in 29 BCE, the main subject is agriculture (the title reflects the Greek word ‘georgika’, agricultural things), and vigorously promotes traditional means of farming. Again, Virgil weaves into his verse cultural and political themes. Cast in four Books, the dynamic expression draws on numerous Classical, mythical and contemporary references, while explaining the best methods for ploughing, animal husbandry, observing weather patterns, the life of bees and the like. Increasingly, the rise and fall of man’s endeavours can be reflected in the vicissitudes of agricultural life. The 20th century translation of Georgics used on this recording is by the highly respected translator of Latin poetry, Smith Palmer Bovie. It is read by Jamie Parker. Closer study of both works while listening is possible through the complete texts that come with the recording.
