Lang's work serves as a significant contribution to the genre of children's literature, contextualizing narratives that not only entertain but also educate readers about the cultural heritage of storytelling. Andrew Lang, a Scottish poet, novelist, and literary critic, was deeply influenced by his early exposure to folklore during his studies at the University of Glasgow and his travels throughout Europe. His scholarly curiosity and passion for myths and legends inspired him to collect and reinterpret these tales, making them accessible to a Victorian audience that was beginning to value children's literature. Lang's work reflects an era that saw a resurgence of interest in folklore, illuminated by Lang's tireless efforts to preserve and celebrate the tales that might otherwise have been forgotten. For readers of all ages, 'The Fairy Books of All Colours' offers a delightful journey into the world of fantasy and moral introspection. By engaging with these stories, readers not only partake in the joys of wondrous adventures but also evoke a sense of nostalgia for the inherent values and lessons embedded within them. This is the Māori language edition of Tāwhaki: The Deeds of a Demigod. The book recalls the miraculous life of Tāwhaki. Similar to Māui, Tāwhaki was a demigod who possessed mighty powers. Tāwhaki almost died at the hands of his brothers-in-law but was found by his wife Hine-piripiri and revived. This near-death experience revealed Tāwhaki's status as a demigod, and from this point Tāwhaki continued to use his powers and gifts to help those around him in ways no human could. This book explores many of these stories, including those of Tāwhaki restoring sight to his blind grandmother and climbing the heavens to find his wife and child.

Mary was the beloved daughter of a sailor and his wife who lived on a hill close to the sea. The rhyme calls her "Mistress Mary, quite contrary" because sad to say she was a contrary child often doing the exact opposite of what her mother and father advised for no reason but that she did not wish to follow their advice. But her parents loved her and knew that she would some day grow out of this peevish behavior. One day her father and brothers were to leave on a long sea journey and she asked him "	And how long will you be gone, papa?" He responded Why, just this, sweetheart," returned the sailor gravely; "all the time that it takes the cowslips and dingle-bells and cockle-shells to sprout from the ground, and grow big and strong, and blossom into flower, and, yes—to wither and die away again—all that time shall your brothers and I sail the seas. But when the cold winds begin to blow, and the flowers are gone, then, God willing, we shall come back to you; and by that time you may have grown wiser and bigger, and I am sure you will have grown older. So one more kiss, sweetheart, and then we must go, for our time is up."
After he left, Mistress Mary decided to plant a garden of these flowers to know when her father and brothers would return and that garden is what the poem is talking about. But it did not happen as she expected! Oh no! Listen to this delightful story to see how Mary learned to not be so contrary.
