Sinopse

Sleeping Beauty Stories includes several stories across several decades from the beginning of is imaginative creation. The story that brought to life the sensational Maleficent the new Disney movie. Includes the stories of Andrew Lang (1844-1912), Charles Perrault, and others. The story: At the christening of a king and queen's long-wished-for child, seven fairies are invited to be godmothers to the infant princess. At the banquet back at the palace, the fairies seat themselves with a golden casket containing golden jeweled utensils laid before them. However, a fairy who was overlooked, having been within a certain tower for many years and thought to be either dead or enchanted, enters and is offered a seating, but not a golden casket since only seven were made. The fairies then offer their gifts of beauty, wit, grace, dance, song and music. The bad fairy, angry at being overlooked, places the princess under an enchantment as her gift: the princess will prick her hand on a spindle and die. One fairy who hadn't yet given her gift, uses it to reverse the evil fairy's curse, but she can only do so partially: instead of dying, the princess will fall into a deep sleep for 100 years and be awoken by a king's son. A hundred years pass and a prince from another family spies the hidden castle during a hunting expedition. His attendants tell him differing stories regarding the happenings in the castle until an old man recounts his father's words: within the castle lies a beautiful princess who is doomed to sleep for a hundred years, whereupon a king's son is to come and awaken her. THIS IS A COLLECTION OF RIVER CITY SHORT STORIES, featuring many of the characters you know from the series. I've included it in the series because many important events occur in (or make better sense after reading) these stories. However, it is not absolutely essential that you read these stories in order to follow the novels. If you wish to skip ahead to the next full novel, please do. If you choose not to, I believe your series experience will be richer.
These are the characters you'll meet in No Good Deed...
    ★An ex-cop looking for redemption.
★An American man and an Irish lass interwined in love and violence.
★A cop with a conscience that he doesn't always listen to.
★A retired cop looking to repair a broken relationship with his drug-addicted son.
★A Yankee cop in the West Texas.
Explore the tangled lives of these men and women in fourteen short tales set in River City!

The nightingale visits all the rose-trees in the area, and one of the roses tells her there is a way to produce a red rose, but only if the nightingale is prepared to sing the sweetest song for the rose all night with her heart pressing into a thorn, sacrificing her life. Seeing the student in tears, and valuing his human life above her bird life, the nightingale carries out the ritual. Read in English by Josh Verbae, unabridged.

Though later known for his essays and novels, Aldous Huxley started his writing career as a poet. Published in 1918, The Defeat of Youth and Other Poems is his third compilation of poetry. The volume begins with "The Defeat of Youth", a sequence of twenty-two sonnets that explores irreconcilability of the ideal and the disappointing reality. Jerome Meckier called it “the century’s most successful sonnet sequence, better than Auden’s or Edna St. Vincent Millay’s.” In the rest of the volume, Huxley continues to explore themes started in The Burning Wheel, his first volume of poetry, including vision, blindness, and other contrasts. The volume concludes with two English translations by Huxley of two French poems: Stéphane Mallarmé’s 1876 poem “L’Après-midi d’un faune" and Arthur Rimbaud’s (1871) poem “Les Chercheuses de poux,” translated as “The Louse Hunters.” Summary by Mary Kay.
