Sinopse

In 'History of English Literature from "Beowulf" to Swinburne,' Andrew Lang embarks on an ambitious and comprehensive exploration of the evolution of English literature across centuries. Lang's literary style is characterized by its clarity and accessibility, combining rigorous scholarly research with eloquent prose that captivates both the academic and casual reader. He meticulously examines pivotal works, authors, and movements, situating texts within their historical and cultural contexts, thereby revealing the interconnectedness of literature and the societal factors that influenced its development. Andrew Lang, a prominent Scottish poet, novelist, and critic of the late 19th century, was deeply immersed in the literary traditions of his time. His extensive background in philology and mythology, along with his personal commitment to understanding literary heritage, uniquely positioned him to undertake this exhaustive study. Lang's critical insights are informed by his own literary endeavors and a keen awareness of the shifting dynamics of literary taste and appreciation during the Victorian era. For readers with an interest in the trajectory of English literature or the societal forces shaping its narratives, this book is an indispensable resource. Lang's coherent synthesis of literary history provides a foundational understanding, making it a valuable addition to both academic libraries and personal collections.

This book contains ideas and thoughts from these philosophers:
    - Martha Nussbaum: At the heart of Nussbaum’s intellectual journey is the development of the capabilities approach, a framework she co-created with economist Amartya Sen. This approach is centered on the idea that justice should be evaluated based on individuals’ abilities to function and achieve various important life goals, rather than simply on income or wealth. The capabilities approach emphasizes human dignity and focuses on the conditions that allow people to live lives they have reason to value. It challenges traditional views of social justice by broadening the scope of what constitutes a flourishing life beyond mere economic success.
    - Peter Singer: Peter Singer is one of the most influential philosophers in contemporary ethics, known for his contributions to utilitarianism, animal rights, global poverty, bioethics, and environmental ethics. His ethical philosophy is grounded in the principle of utilitarianism, which holds that the right course of action is the one that produces the greatest overall happiness or well-being. Singer’s work is characterized by a practical, results-oriented approach, focusing on how ethical principles can be applied to real-world issues to alleviate suffering and promote well-being. His influential works, such as Animal Liberation and The Life You Can Save, challenge readers to consider the moral implications of their actions in a variety of contexts, from how they treat animals to how they engage with global poverty.

During the Civil War, armies took many soldiers captive, but they also captured some civilians as well, such as sutlers, nurses, teamsters, and other service personnel. In addition, both the Union and the Confederacy imprisoned deserters, sympathizers with the enemy, traitors, and draft dodgers. The numbers cited vary somewhat, and often, precise numbers should be regarded with caution because the official numbers do not account for everyone. One somewhat authoritative total is that Confederates confined 7,092 Union officers and 179,091 enlisted men in prison camps, along with 1,962 civilians, for a total of 188,145 (Stack 3). By comparison, the Union captured 35,782 officers, 426,852 enlisted men, and 13,535 Confederate civilians, but this total is misleading because it includes the troops that surrendered when the war ended, including the commands of Robert E. Lee, Joseph E. Johnston, Richard Taylor, and Edmund Kirby Smith. Almost all the troops who surrendered at the end of the war were immediately paroled and allowed to go home. A commonly cited estimate is that 215,000 Confederate and 195,000 Union soldiers were prisoners of war in one of the various prison camp facilities. There were 32 sizable Confederate camps during the war, half of them in South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama.
Of the Union prisoners, 2,696 escaped from prison, and 3,170 others joined the Confederate armies. Of the Confederates, 2,098 escaped, and 5,432 joined the Union forces. 94,000 Union troops were paroled, and 248,599 Confederates were also released on parole (Stack 4).That said, the number of escapees cited are best regarded as estimates rather than exact totals - record-keeping was accurate in some places and inaccurate in others, and as the Confederacy was in its last months, chaotic conditions prevailed.

Every adoption is rooted in loss.

Adoption is often framed by happy narratives, but the reality is that many adoptees struggle with unaddressed trauma and issues of identity and belonging. Adoptees often spend the majority of their youth without the language to explore the grief related to adoption or the permission to legitimize their conflicting emotions.

Adoptee and counselor Cameron Lee Small names the realities of the adoptee's journey, narrating his own and other adoptees' stories in all their complexity. He unpacks the history of how adoption has worked and names how the church influenced adoption practices with unintended negative impacts on adoptees' faith. Small's own tumultuous search for and reunion with his mother in Korea inspired him to help other adoptees navigate what it means to carry multiple stories. His adoptee-centered advocacy helps adoptees regain their agency and identity on a journey of integration and healing, with meaningful relationships in all their family systems.
