The latest twist-filled novel in award-winning New York Times bestselling author Mary Monroe’s Depression-era Alabama saga tells the riveting tale of identical twin sisters with a talent for switching lives and hiding the scandalous results—until one risk too many changes the game forever …

Since childhood, identical twins Leona and Fiona Dunbar have been getting in—and out—of trouble by pretending to be each other. Yet underneath, they couldn’t be more different. Outspoken Leona lives to break rules, have a good time, and scandalize their respectable hometown of Lexington. Fiona is a seemingly demure churchgoing girl who is the apple of her domineering, widowed mother Mavis’s eye.

But together, the twins have fooled teachers, boyfriends, bosses, racist police—and most importantly, straitlaced Mavis. Even when Leona does jail time for Fiona, their unbreakable bond keeps them fiercely loyal. … So when Fiona feels stifled in her passionless marriage, and Leona is heartbroken over losing her one true love, it’s perfect timing to change places once again …

Leona is shocked to discover she enjoys the security of being a wife and homebody. And the unexpected spark between her and Fiona’s husband is giving her all kinds of deliciously sexy ideas. Meanwhile, Fiona enjoys being free, single, and reveling in the independence she’s never had. And the more she indulges her secret, long-repressed wild child, the more Leona’s ex-lover becomes one temptation she’s having trouble resisting …

As the sisters’ masquerade ignites desires and appetites they never expected, it also puts their most damning secrets on the line. Once the fallout rocks their small town, can Fiona and Leona’s deep sisterhood shield them from total disaster and help them reconcile their mistakes? Or will the trust between them become a weapon that shatters their lives for good?

    Machado de Assis

Esau & Jacob is a brilliant and ironic novel by Machado de Assis, one of Brazil's most celebrated literary figures. First published in 1904, this masterful work blends psychological insight, social commentary, and subtle humor to examine rivalry, identity, and the shifting political landscape of a nation in transition.

The story revolves around twin brothers, Pedro and Paulo, whose lifelong rivalry begins even before their birth. Though identical in appearance, they grow into men of sharply contrasting temperaments and ideologies. Pedro is aligned with the monarchy, while Paulo passionately supports republicanism—mirroring Brazil's own political transformation during the late nineteenth century. Their personal conflict becomes a symbolic reflection of a country divided between tradition and change.

At the heart of their rivalry stands Flora, a gentle and indecisive young woman who finds herself unable to choose between the two brothers. Her emotional paralysis becomes a poignant metaphor for uncertainty in times of upheaval. Surrounding them is a cast of richly drawn characters, including the observant and witty Counselor Aires, whose reflective narration offers both insight and irony as he contemplates human nature and the illusions people cling to.

Through elegant prose and understated satire, Machado de Assis dissects themes of duality, free will, political idealism, and the often-irrational forces that drive human behavior. Rather than offering dramatic confrontations, the novel unfolds with quiet psychological depth, revealing how pride, stubbornness, and vanity shape destinies in subtle but profound ways.

Set against the backdrop of Brazil's transition from empire to republic, Esau & Jacob is both an intimate character study and a broader meditation on national identity. Machado's signature irony and philosophical tone elevate the narrative beyond a simple tale of sibling rivalry, transforming it into a timeless exploration of division—within families, within societies, and within the self.

Elegant, thought-provoking, and quietly powerful, Esau & Jacob stands as one of Machado de Assis's most refined works and a cornerstone of Latin American literature.

Set in the crumbling Spanish missions of nineteenth-century Baja California, this mythic novel in linked stories follows two grief-stricken people as haunted as the desolate chapels around them: a priest who caused the drowning of a native boy by compelling him to fish for pearls, and a deaf woman trying to outrun her murderous reputation as a pistolera. Though the stories span landscapes, villages, characters, and decades, the heart of the novel is Baja California itself―a stark land of cactus and creosote, of russet canyons and splintered wastes of rock―where people living in the shadow of ruined missions seek redemption on an inhospitable peninsula forsaken even by its priests.

There is something about the number 3.
The Ancient Greeks believed 3 was the perfect number, and in China 3 has always been a lucky number, and they know a thing or two.
Most religions also have 3 this and 3 that and, of course, in these more modern times, three’s a crowd may be too many, except when it’s a ménage à trois. It seems good things usually come in threes.
Whatever history and culture says WE think 3, a hat-trick of stories, is a great number to explore themes and literary avenues that classic authors were so adept at creating.
