Sinopsis

For 50 years, educator and sociologist Geoff Whitty resolutely
pursued social justice through education, first as a classroom teacher and ultimately
as the Director of the Institute of Education in London.
The
essays in this volume - written by some of the most influential authors in the
sociology of education and critical policy studies - take Whitty’s work as the
starting point from which to examine key contemporary issues in education and
the challenges to social justice that they present. Set within three themes of
knowledge, policy and practice in education, the chapters tackle the issues of
defining and accessing ‘legitimate’ knowledge, the changing nature of education
policy under neoliberalism and globalization, and the reshaping of teacher
workplaces and professionalism – as well as attempts to realize more
emancipatory practice. Whitty’s scholarship on what constitutes quality and
impact in educational research is also explored.

Together, the essays open a
window on a life in the sociology of education, the scholarly community of
which it was part, and the facets of education policy, practice and research
that they continue to reveal and challenge in pursuit of social justice. They
celebrate Whitty as one of the foremost sociologists of education of his
generation, but also as a friend and colleague. And they highlight the
continued relevance of his contribution to those seeking to promote fairer and
more inclusive education systems.

The Zulu victory at Isandlwana, the heroic British defence of Rorke's Drift and the eventual British triumph are among the most closely researched events of the colonial era. In this historical companion, Ian Knight, one of the foremost authorities on the war and the Zulu kingdom, provides an essential reference guide to a short, bloody campaign that had an enduring impact on the history of Britain and southern Africa. He gives succinct summaries of the issues, events, armies and individuals involved. His work is an invaluable resource for anyone who is interested in the history of the period, in the operations of the British army in southern Africa, and in the Zulu kingdom.

There are many unusual stories of persons seeing the future, and some who have seen the past. Some stories seem to show that persons have actually visited the past and interacted with the people they met.I’ve had many paranormal experiences myself and visions of the future which I wrote about in two of my own books. I’m also an Engineer and think this gives me a pretty unique perspective about these phenomena. In this book you will read about many different researched cases of people visiting both the past and the future. From the evidence, this seems to be a much more common occurrence than was previously thought. There is also a chapter on theories of how these phenomena might exist. That these might be a type of paranormal experience and/or involve existing time warps. The world is truly much stranger than we can even imagine. I hope you enjoy these stories and they give you lots of food for thought.

The second volume in this enthralling collection of the British prime minister’s journalistic work, tracing Hitler’s rise to power and the threat of Nazism.   Legendary politician and military strategist Winston S. Churchill was a master not only of the battlefield, but of the page and the podium. Over the course of forty books and countless speeches, broadcasts, news items and more, he addressed a country at war and at peace, thrilling with victory but uneasy with its shifting role on the global stage. In 1953, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for “his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.” During his lifetime, he enthralled readers and brought crowds roaring to their feet; in the years since his death, his skilled writing has inspired generations of eager history buffs.   This thrilling collection brings together Churchill’s reporting for the Daily Telegraph and the Evening Standard from 1936 to 1939—tracing Hitler’s rise to power, the Nazi invasion of the Rhineland, and the looming specter of war.   In the first few years of Nazi ascendance, many European intellectuals and leaders advocated negotiating with Hitler, reluctant to take steps towards outright war. Churchill is one of the few who understood the scope of the Nazi threat and advocated armament against Germany early on, a position that contributed to Britain’s early entry into World War II. This collection is a must-read for anyone interested in this pivotal moment in world history, as told by one of its central figures.
