Summary

The most important northern Italian artist of the early Renaissance, Andrea Mantegna was a student of Roman archaeology and the son-in-law of Jacopo Bellini. A pioneering master of perspective, Mantegna used pictorial devices such as extreme foreshortening, lowering the horizon to create greater monumentality and rendering his figures as more rounded and modelled, with Donatellian naturalism. His masterpieces are renowned for their minute attention to detail, rendering rocky and metallic landscapes with a fundamentally sculptural approach to painting. His paintings were highly sought after by Europe’s royal houses, while Dürer, Rubens and Rembrandt are just a few of the artists that copied and learnt from his works. Delphi’s Masters of Art Series presents the world’s first digital e-Art books, allowing readers to explore the works of great artists in comprehensive detail. This volume presents Mantegna’s complete paintings in beautiful detail, with concise introductions, hundreds of high quality images and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1)

In the 1920s, Berlin, once perceived as a puritan city, became the capital of lust and the debauchery of morals.
It was in this capricious town that an exceptional museum dedicated entirely to eroticism opened its doors. Abandoning all aspects of voyeurism, the Erotic Museum in Berlin is a magical place in which the imagination of man and the most refined works of art interact. This remarkable book is comprised of more than 350 rare illustrations, and accompanied by a major study written by, history professor, HansJürgen Döpp. It covers various aspects of erotica throughout time and continents.

From as scholar of mass communications, an international study of the influence of Hollywood movies on twentieth-century European art films.   With McDonalds in Moscow and Disneyland in Paris and Tokyo, American popular culture is spreading around the globe. Regional, national, and ethnic cultures are being powerfully affected by competition from American values and American popular forms. This literate and lively study explores the spread of American culture into international cinema as reflected by the collision and partial merger of two important styles of filmmaking: the Hollywood style of stars, genres, and action, and the European art film style of ambiguity, authorial commentary, and borrowings from other arts. Peter Lev departs from the traditional approach of national cinema histories and discusses some of the blends, overlaps, and hegemonies that are typical of the world film industry of recent years. In Part One, he gives a historical and theoretical overview of what he terms the “Euro-American art film,” which is characterized by prominent use of the English language, a European art film director, cast and crew from at least two countries, and a stylistic mixing of European art film and American entertainment. The second part of Lev’s study examines in detail five examples of the Euro-American art film: Contempt (1963), Blow-Up (1966), The Canterbury Tales (1972), Paris, Texas (1983), and The Last Emperor (1987). These case studies reveal that the European art film has had a strong influence on world cinema and that many Euro-American films are truly cultural blends rather than abject takeovers by Hollywood cinema.

The American West has always provided larger than life characters, righting wrongs to make the world a better place and all set in a mythic landscape.

In ‘The Six-Shooter’ James Stewart starred as Britt Ponset, a drifting cowboy in the sunset years of the wild west. Episodes ranged from straight western drama to light and sentimental comedy. Stewart being one of the reigning stars of Hollywood at the time also brought his own touches to bear. His use of whispered narration during tense scenes created a heightened sense of drama and then relief when the situation was resolved.

The American West that radio, movies, and TV portrayed is the stuff of legends; a fictional concoction usually far from the truth but ‘The Six-Shooter’ did something that few other radio shows could provide; entertainment that captivated the listener.
