Sinopse

In "The Attack in Trench Warfare: Impressions and Reflections of a Company Commander," André Laffargue offers a compelling and intimate account of the harsh realities faced by soldiers during World War I. His reflections not only chronicle the physical and psychological toll of trench warfare but also delve into the philosophical underpinnings of duty, sacrifice, and the absurdity of war. Laffargue's literary style oscillates between stark realism and profound introspection, capturing the chaotic essence of battle while fostering a poignant connection to the human experience within the theater of war. This work positions itself within the broader literary canon of war literature, characterized by the aim to present an authentic portrayal of soldiers' lives amid the horrors of conflict. André Laffargue was a company commander in the French Army during World War I, and his firsthand experiences profoundly shaped his narrative. While serving in the trenches, he grappled with the complexities of leadership and the moral dilemmas faced by soldiers, which greatly informed his writing. His unique perspective bridges personal encounters with broader historical themes, making the work a crucial addition to the understanding of military literature and its implications on societal perceptions of war. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in military history, literature, and the existential questions raised by conflict. Laffargue's blend of personal narrative and critical reflection invites readers to contemplate the fundamental consequences of war, challenging them to engage with the moral complexities that accompany acts of violence and heroism.

The Eastern Han Dynasty: A History of China, PART ONE takes you on an unforgettable journey through one of China's most transformative eras. Once fractured by war, the Han Empire finds hope in Liu Xiu—a noble who rises through chaos to become Emperor Guangwu of Han. But claiming the throne is only the beginning. To rebuild an empire torn apart, he must outmaneuver rivals, crush rebellions, and restore order.
From the fall of the Chimei Army to the eruption of the Three Rebellions, Liu Xiu's reign is marked by endless trials. Allies become threats, and loyalty is tested—especially for Wei Xiao, a trusted officer with dangerous ambitions. Meanwhile, the empire expands into Longyou and sets its sights on resource-rich Shu, where political intrigue runs deep.
Military legends like General Ma Yuan rise, shaping China's future with brilliant campaigns. As peace returns, loyal ministers help rebuild the government. But power shifts within the court, and when the crown prince unexpectedly steps down, the influential Yin Family begins to dominate the throne's inner circle.
A new era begins with Emperor Ming, who faces his own battles—reforms, alliances, and unrest. Yet Han is no longer limited by borders. Ban Chao’s bold expeditions to the Western Regions spark a wave of imperial ambition, paving the way for the rise of a new conqueror who will take Han’s influence farther than ever before.
This is not just a chronicle of events—it's a sweeping epic of ambition, war, strategy, and legacy. If you’re drawn to tales of empire-building, battlefield brilliance, and court intrigue, The Eastern Han Dynasty: Part One is a journey you won’t want to miss.

At nine years old, Marianne Richmond's life is upended when she collapses with full-body convulsions. "Pinched nerve," says the ER doctor. But when one episode becomes many, it's clear something is wrong. Afraid to be at school, in her body, and in her life, Marianne desperately hopes for help and healing. But her emotionally unavailable mother refuses medication on Marianne's behalf, preferring prayer and homeopathy.

At age 18, a full-body seizure in Marianne’s dorm room leads her to a diagnosis, medication, and neurological intervention. Physically, Marianne feels "fixed," but emotional healing proves more elusive. In the years to come, Marianne becomes a parent and writes a new story for her life. She authors children's books that touch millions of lives, each of them celebrating a mother's unconditional love. When her mother becomes ill, Marianne has a choice to make: will she be present for the mother who rarely felt present to her?

If You Were My Daughter is a story of learning to hear your own voice, of one daughter's return to wholeness, and a story of accepting that a mother's best can still fall far too short. Richmond illuminates how the stories we're born into shape the ones we tell about ourselves—and reminds us that we have the powerful permission to develop a new relationship with what is difficult in our lives.

Over the past five years, the Indo-Pacific region's importance for Europe has grown significantly. However, the launch of the EU Strategy for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific in September 2021 and its subsequent implementation have been affected by growing polarisation between the US and China, and by a fast-changing scenario caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This Report examines the state and perspectives of the EU's Indo-Pacific strategy, 18 months after its launch. Are there avenues for cooperation with regional military initiatives, such as the QUAD? How is the economic landscape changing, in particular after the start of negotiations for the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF)? What are the main strategies of Indo-Pacific countries for the green transition? And how do the US, China, and ASEAN countries view and act in the Indo-Pacific region?

The Tensaw River introduces one of the American South's richest and most fertile natural features. Author Mike Bunn is director of Historic Blakeley State Park, which is nestled in a prominent bend of the majestic Tensaw River.

Forming the eastern boundary of the expansive Mobile-Tensaw Delta, the Tensaw has had little industrial development. Left largely undisturbed, the river flows free and bountiful into the grand estuary of Mobile Bay in ways that would be recognizable to Native Americans centuries ago and to pioneers who arrived before Alabama became a state.

Bunn's unforgettable stories in The Tensaw River trace the construction and occupation of the Bottle Creek site, an important mound complex built by Southeastern Native Americans a millennia ago. Nearby Blakeley is an antebellum ghost town whose lost memories tease the imagination. During the Civil War, the boom of artillery fire in the battle that sealed the fate of the city of Mobile echoed along the bends in the Tensaw.

Located near popular travel destinations, the Tensaw's "Forgotten Cultural Heritage Corridor" is a gateway to the enchanting beauty of—and humankind's relationship to—the landscape of the American South.

The Calle Cardenal Herrero in Córdoba is an iconic cobbled street impossible to overlook, for it is home to the Andalusian city's spectacular Mosque-Cathedral. Also known as “La Mezquita,” this one-of-a-kind Moorish and Christian place of worship reels in about 1.5 million visitors each year, most of whom find themselves spellbound by its hypnotic architectural features and the riveting history that has transpired and continues to within the beautifully weathered walls of the dual-church. That said, the Mezquita is far more than a mere tourist attraction - in recent years, the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba has become the crux of a complicated religious conflict resurrected by impassioned worshipers and patriotic locals who fear not only for the future of its legacy, but the preservation of its true history.
It is easy for those on the outside looking in to make hasty judgments about the ongoing dispute, considering the endless amount of information that is uploaded online by the second. The contentious debates surrounding the Mezquita are often products of outdated prejudices, festering distrust, and whitewashing, all of which make it harder for the Mezquita to remain a non-discriminatory space serviceable to and appreciated by everyone today.
The Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz is nowhere near the largest monument in Toledo. The grand Toledo Cathedral, for instance, dwarfs this modest, two-level structure with its height of 146 feet. The simple elegance of the mezquita pales in comparison to the city's stupendous landmarks. Toledo is, after all, home to the mighty stone fortification known as the Alcazar of Toledo, and the breathtaking masonry showpiece that is the Synagogue of Santa Maria la Blanca. Nevertheless, this multicultural mezquita is often hailed as one of the most precious treasures of Toledo, a place that truly embodies the unique, cross-cultural spirit of the city.
