The purpose of these contrasts is, very simply, to describe the difference between what leads to desirable outcomes and what does not.

  William Howard Taft (September 15, 1857 - March 8, 1930), born in Cincinnati, Ohio, served as Secretary of War under President Theodore Roosevelt, then was elected on the Republican ticket as the 27th president of the United States from 1909 to 1913, and, later, named the tenth chief justice of the United States from 1921 to 1930. He is the only person to have held both offices. The following recordings are from the campaign trail in 1908, and, later, in 1912.

Drawing on primary sources and firsthand accounts, historian James Durney reveals how the final battles of the Civil War were fought not on battlefields, but in the jails and camps where former comrades became bitter enemies — a dark chapter in Irish history that has remained hidden for too long.
