Sinopsis

Swing States Power examines the pivotal role these states play in U.S. presidential elections and their impact on national policy. This book explores the evolution of swing states, highlighting how demographic shifts and economic changes influence their political alignment. One intriguing aspect is how the intense focus on these states can overshadow the needs of others, creating both opportunities and challenges for American democracy.

The book analyzes voting patterns within swing states, uncovering key demographic groups influencing voter behavior. It also dissects campaign strategies, such as resource allocation and messaging tactics, employed by candidates. Through historical election data, public opinion polls, and interviews, the book guides readers through a logical progression, defining swing states, analyzing specific examples like Ohio and Florida, and considering the implications for electoral fairness.

"Sierra Snowpaw is just at the Lonnegan Ski Resort looking for a good time. You can trust him. If he doesn't talk a lot about his past, well, a lot of guys have done things they'd rather forget. A lot of guys have been through things they'd rather forget, too. He's so nice that it isn’t that weird when he asks about some of the other guests. Not like a cop, though, or a Fed--well, okay. Maybe a little like that one guy from that movie. Maybe he's off-duty, settling a score on his own time. Or maybe he's the guy on the run. Come to think of it, he looks around corners like someone's after him, too. But you know, some guys are chased by nothing more than the ghosts of their past..." A powerful account of Jewish resistance in Nazi-occupied Europe and why such resistance was so remarkable.

Most popular accounts of the Holocaust typically cast Jewish victims as meek and ask, "Why didn't Jews resist?" But we know now that Jews did resist, staging armed uprisings in ghettos and camps throughout Nazi-occupied Europe. In Hope and Honor, Rachel L. Einwohner illustrates the dangers in attempting resistance under unimaginable conditions and shows how remarkable such resistance was. She draws on oral testimonies, published and unpublished diaries and memoirs, and other written materials produced both by survivors and those who perished to show how Jews living under Nazi occupation in the ghettos of Warsaw, Vilna, and Lódz reached decisions about resistance. Using methods of comparative-historical sociology, Einwohner shows that decisions about resistance rested on Jews' assessments of the threats facing them, and somewhat ironically, armed resistance took place only once activists reached the critical conclusion that they had no hope for survival. Rather than ask the typical question of why Jews generally didn't resist, this powerful account of Jewish resistance seeks to explain why they resisted at all when there was no hope for success, and they faced almost certain death.

The Housemaid’s Revolt reimagines the domestic thriller as a political act. Beneath the surface of servitude and civility, it uncovers a world built on invisible labor, quiet endurance, and the myth of gratitude. The housemaid is no longer a background figure — she becomes a philosopher of survival, observing the architecture of power from inside its walls. Her revolt is not an explosion but an awakening: the decision to stop cleaning up the messes of others, to stop mistaking obedience for goodness. A modern parable of class, gender, and rebellion, this book transforms the symbol of the servant into a mirror of the modern condition — where exploitation wears a smile, and rebellion begins with a refusal to disappear.

In June 1972, President Richard Nixon put pen to paper and signed the Educational Amendments of 1972 into law. The nearly 150-page document makes no mention of “gender,” “athletics,” “girls,” or “women.” The bill did not appear to contain anything earth shattering. But tucked into its final pages, a heading appears, “Title IX—Prohibition of Sex Discrimination.” These 37 words would change the world for girls and women across the United States. On its face, Title IX legally guaranteed equal opportunity in education. In time, Title IX would serve as the tipping point for the modern era of women’s sport. Slowly but surely, women’s athletics at the high school and collegiate levels grew to prominence, and Tennessee fast emerged as a national leader.
In Title IX, Pat Summitt, and Tennessee’s Trailblazers, Mary Ellen Pethel introduces readers to past and present pioneers—each instrumental to the success of women’s athletics across the state and nation. Through vibrant profiles, Pethel celebrates the lives and careers of household names like Pat Summitt and Candace Parker, as well as equally important forerunners such as Ann Furrow and Teresa Phillips. Through their lived experiences, these fifty individuals laid the foundation for athletic excellence in Tennessee, which in turn shaped the national landscape for women’s sports.
With interviewees ranging from age 20 to 93, Pethel artfully combines storytelling with scholarship. Guided by the voices of the athletes, coaches, and administrators, Pethel vividly documents achievement and adversity, wins and losses, and advice for the next generation. This book represents the first statewide compilation of its kind—offering readers a behind-the- scenes perspective of Tennessee women who dedicated their lives to the advancement of sport and gender equality. Readers will delight in Title IX, Pat Summitt, and Tennessee’s Trailblazers: 50 Years, 50 Stories. For more follow @drpethel.
