Sinopse

Sindhu River Legends explores the profound historical and religious significance of the Sindhu River, also known as the Indus, as the cradle of the Indus Valley Civilization and a sacred entity in Hinduism. The book highlights the river's role in shaping early societies through sophisticated urban planning and its personification as a goddess in religious rituals. One intriguing fact is the Indus Valley Civilization's advanced infrastructure, including complex drainage systems, showcasing their deep understanding of water management. Another insight is the enduring reverence for the Sindhu in Vedic traditions, where it is celebrated as a life-giving force. The book uniquely combines archaeology, religious studies, and environmental concerns to provide a holistic view of the Sindhu. It begins by establishing the geographical and historical context, then progresses through sections detailing the civilization's advancements, the sacred traditions surrounding the river, and the contemporary environmental challenges it faces. By examining archaeological findings, ancient texts, and modern studies, the book argues that the Sindhu River is a cultural and spiritual artifact, encapsulating the intertwined history of civilization and religious belief. The book also touches on the impact of environmental degradation on both historical sites and the religious practices associated with the Sindhu.

    In her career as a science reporter, Nell Greenfieldboyce has reported from inside a space shuttle, the bottom of a coal mine, and the control room of a particle collider; she's presented news on the color of dinosaur eggs, ice worms that live on mountaintop glaciers, and signs of life on Venus. In this, her debut book, she delivers a wholly original collection of powerful, emotionally raw, and unforgettable personal essays that probe the places where science touches our lives most intimately.

    Expertly weaving her own experiences of motherhood and marriage with an almost devotional attention to the natural world, Greenfieldboyce grapples with the weighty dualities of life: birth and death, constancy and impermanence, memory and doubt, love and aging. She looks for a connection to the universe by embarking on a search for the otherworldly glint of a micrometeorite in the dust, consults meteorologists and storm chasers on the eerie power of tornadoes to soothe her children's anxieties, and processes her adolescent oblivion through the startling discovery of black holes.

    A beautiful blend of explanatory science, original reporting, and personal experience, Transient and Strange captures the ache of ordinary life, offering resonant insights into both the world around us and the worlds within us.

    Two bonus stories, "Santa" and "Paperclips," are featured at the end of the audiobook.

    At an auto da fe in 16th century Portugal, Diego Lopes was chained to a stake and a pyre was lit. Then, according to both Christian and Jewish witnesses, he mysteriously disappeared. The only point of contention was that the Christians claimed he was such an extraordinarily evil heretic that he was dragged body and soul directly to hell, while the Jews believed he was such a heroic saint that, like Elijah the prophet, he was taken body and soul up to heaven. What really happened? And can love, strong enough to cross a religious divide, survive the fires of the Inquisition? The answers to these questions are the story of Acts of Faith.

    From Slaying Dragons Press Classics, this reprint of Novena to the Holy Spirit includes an introduction about the Church’s high esteem for this great Doctor of the Church.
    ~~~
    Our hearts have become the altars of God upon which He desires that the “fire of His divine love,” should always be burning. It is for this reason that the Eternal Father was not satisfied with sending only His eternal Son to us, but longed to send to us the Holy Spirit as well, that He might dwell in our souls “and keep them constantly on fire with love.”
    St. Alphonsus said, “Love is also called dew, because it cools the heart of bad passions and of temptations. Therefore the Holy Ghost is also called refreshment and cooling in the heat. This dew descends into our hearts in the time of prayer.” By this reliance upon the action of the Holy Spirit, St. Alphonsus teaches that every disordered passion of ours will be appeased, and we will come to know that peace of God which surpasses all understanding.
    These insights of St. Alphonsus Liguori are among the many which fill this book. They are sure to awaken in the reader, and in particular the one who prays through this Novena, a deep desire to do God’s will that this divine fire may be always burning in his soul.
    St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696 – 1787), was a zealous missionary, exemplary bishop, miracle worker, and prolific writer whose praises were sung by the whole Church during his life and after his death. Following his departure from this world, the Pope was inundated with requests to list St. Alphonsus Liguori among the great Doctors of the Church, an honor which his writings, capturing the hearts of all who take hold of them, testify he is worthy. The two works presented here are just a small part of the great writings he has left to the Church.
