Sinopsis

Secrets Sealed explores the pervasive influence of government secrecy on our understanding of history and politics, revealing how hidden narratives shape public opinion and manipulate historical records. The book examines the anatomy of government secrecy, demonstrating its impact in major 20th and 21st-century events, such as the Cold War. One intriguing fact is how propaganda and misinformation campaigns were strategically employed to influence global politics during this period.

The book begins by introducing "strategic secrecy" and then analyzes case studies where declassified documents revealed previously unknown details about key political decisions. It challenges conventional historical methodologies by urging a critical examination of hidden narratives alongside publicly available records.

The book's value lies in its investigative approach, prompting readers to question the motives behind withheld information and equipping them with the skills to critically assess information sources. By doing so, Secrets Sealed offers a fresh perspective on familiar events, challenging conventional wisdom.

The An Lushan Rebellion, one of the most significant uprisings in Chinese history, did not emerge overnight. The roots of the rebellion can be traced back to the political, social, and military tensions that plagued the Tang Dynasty in the mid-8th century. The Tang Empire, once at its peak, was experiencing a slow but steady decline, marked by corruption, factionalism, and a weakening central authority. These conditions set the stage for the rise of regional military leaders like An Lushan.
An Lushan was a general of mixed Sogdian and Turkish descent, originally serving in the Tang military. His talents as a military strategist, combined with his ability to garner the loyalty of his troops, made him a powerful figure. He rose through the ranks of the imperial court, earning favor from Emperor Xuanzong. Initially, An Lushan was appointed to oversee the northern frontier, where he successfully defended the empire from external threats. However, his growing influence, both militarily and politically, began to stir unease at the imperial court.
The Tang Dynasty’s reliance on powerful military governors, known as jiedushi, to maintain order in the frontier regions allowed these individuals to amass significant power. This decentralization of authority undermined the emperor's control over the empire and contributed to widespread corruption. The power struggles within the court and the lavish spending of Emperor Xuanzong’s court, especially during his later years, further distanced the ruling elite from the needs of the common people.

In the summer of 1866, Colonel Henry B. Carrington set out from Fort Laramie to establish a series of forts along the Bozeman Trail with the goal of protecting migrants moving along the trail. The Bozeman Trail ran through the Powder River country, which included the traditional hunting grounds of Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho peoples. Carrington had about 1,000 people in his column, of which about 700 were soldiers and 300 were civilians, likely soldiers’ families and migrants.
The ongoing hostilities, which included the notorious Fetterman's Massacre, ultimately convinced American officials to head back to the negotiating table with the Native Americans, and as a result, Red Cloud has often been labeled the only Indian chief to win a war against the Americans. After that, however, Red Cloud continued to lead his people to reservations first near the Black Hills and later westward after the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Though he was respected as a war chief, it was his political functions as a spokesman of the Oglala that truly allowed Red Cloud to leave his mark over the last several decades of his life. Whereas Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse suffered premature deaths, Red Cloud outlived the other important leaders of the Sioux until dying in 1909 at 87 years old. Near the end of his life, he reportedly said, “They made us many promises, more than I can remember. But they kept but one -- they promised to take our land...and they took it.”
Red Cloud’s War: The History and Legacy of the Only 19th Century War Won by Native Americans against the United States analyzes the seminal moments that brought about the war, the war’s most famous battles, and the aftermath.

It's not just what you say, but how you say it. Good communicators know this, but it's often easier said than done. Teachers, leaders, and speakers are often left bewildered, wondering why the content that was so carefully planned and delivered seems to fall flat with the audience. The art of communication requires more than the transfer of information; it both connects with and engages the hearer. To communicate well, speakers must understand both their audience and themselves.

Speaking by the Numbers offers a strategy that combines communication principles with Enneagram wisdom to help leaders, pastors, and teachers understand how to convey content in ways that both inspire and connect with their audiences. Using the Enneagram wisdom of triads and stances, communicators can learn insight into the ways that various Enneagram numbers receive and process information. Sean Palmer draws from his extensive experience as a public speaker to develop communication strategies that lead to connection, transformation, and mobilization of audiences. Providing real examples of speeches he has given, Palmer shows how he uses the Enneagram to craft a message that connects with his audience.

A healthy marriage of Enneagram wisdom and communication skill can help us speak with clarity into the heart of where people live, love, and experience life.
