Synopsis

Saharan Networks explores the vital role of the Sahara Desert as a conduit for trade, cultural exchange, and globalization in world history. Challenging the perception of Africa as isolated, the book reveals intricate networks connecting sub-Saharan Africa to the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and beyond. These Saharan trade networks facilitated the exchange of commodities like gold and salt, impacting societies and enabling the rise of empires such as Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. The book examines the roles of Berber traders, Arab merchants, and African intermediaries, while investigating the social, religious, and political dimensions of this economic history. It progresses from establishing the geographical context to exploring key commodities, influential groups, and the eventual decline of these networks due to European maritime expansion. By utilizing diverse sources, including archaeological findings and historical chronicles, Saharan Networks emphasizes the agency of African actors in shaping trans-Saharan trade, offering a nuanced perspective on a crucial aspect of world history.

The question is: Can we find our way back to a state of grounded, calm, openhearted connection with ourselves and others? In Finding Safety in Your Nervous System, Deb Dana provides a valuable blueprint for building resilience and finding safety through the many ups and downs of life. Drawing from the wisdom of Polyvagal Theory, she skillfully shows us how to become conscious navigators of our nervous system—inhabiting a comforting inner sanctuary where we can finally relax, connect, and breathe again. Each guided audio session offers valuable insights that invite us to:• Explore proven ways to tune into and befriend your nervous system, so you can feel safe, calm, and regulated, maybe for the first time in years.• Gain science-backed tools to move from “flight, fight, or freeze” survival mode into a sense of groundedness and emotional balance.• Discover what safety and “home” means to your nervous system and what sensations, cues, and practices can help you return there when you need it most. The beauty of this work is that it’s deeply personal. What brings safety to one person may not be the same for another. The invitation is to gently explore your own nervous system and notice, What helps me feel a little more anchored right now? With practice, you begin to recognize the pathways that bring you a felt sense of regulation. Instead of living at the mercy of stress and overwhelm, you’ll discover relief within the innate wisdom of your own body—guiding you back, again and again, to the steady ground of safety within.

    The Plague Years - A Doctor’s...

In 1992, Dr. Ross A. Slotten signed more death certificates in Chicago—and, by inference, the state of Illinois—than anyone else. As a family physician, he was trained to care for patients from birth to death, but when he completed his residency in 1984, he had no idea that many of his future patients would be cut down in the prime of their lives. Among those patients were friends, colleagues, and lovers, shunned by most of the medical community because they were gay and HIV positive. Slotten wasn’t an infectious disease specialist, but because of his unique position as both a gay man and a young physician, he became an unlikely pioneer, swept up in one of the worst epidemics in modern history.

Plague Years is an unprecedented first-person account of that epidemic, spanning not just the city of Chicago but four continents as well. Slotten provides an intimate yet comprehensive view of the disease’s spread alongside heartfelt portraits of his patients and his own conflicted feelings as a medical professional, drawn from more than thirty years of personal notebooks. In telling the story of someone who was as much a potential patient as a doctor, Plague Years sheds light on the darkest hours in the history of the LGBT community in ways that no previous medical memoir has.

My aim with this book is to help bring some clarity and a sense of direction to adults and younger people alike.
As an adult, if you find yourself kind of stuck, say you’ve had a fair amount of experiences up to this point, you are financially independent and overall pretty content but feel you kind of lost contact with some of your dreams and aspirations from around…10 years ago…keep on reading.
Or, if you’re a student who feels overwhelmed in today’s world where we’re all constantly flooded by the online medium which fights for each second of our attention and distorts reality by feeding us fake reference points…keep on reading.
It’s completely understandable how someone can feel lost and not know what to do with one’s life.
While I do not claim to hold an absolute truth, I firmly believe that this book can and will be seen as a clear and solid starting point in helping you find at least some answers to questions you have or may have, whether you’re an adult looking to improve your life, or a student feeling your life is just starting out.
In short, my idea was to take Abraham Maslow’s Expanded Hierarchy of Needs and pump it full of steroids.
I wanted to take this pyramid and turn it into a tesseract.
Ok…so maybe that fifth cup of coffee at 3 a.m. wasn’t such a good idea after all.

Old Before Their Time is the deeply personal story of a thirty-five-year scientific investigation of the effects of childhood sexual abuse on child development and adult outcomes. The startling conclusion is that early childhood trauma accelerates biological aging of the body and the mind.

The listener will gain a comprehensive perspective on the many ways in which maltreatment embeds itself in a child's mind, body, and behavior and is expressed across generations. It concludes that the prevention of child maltreatment is the single most powerful target for the prevention of mental illness, and for reducing premature death from common illnesses.

One in five women and one in eight men report a history of child sexual abuse. As adults, victims often have questions about how it has affected them. Old Before Their Time provides answers as well as recommendations to improve child protection and treatment services which impact millions of children and families every year. Written for a general science reader, this engaging book is well-referenced for professionals who work with children or adults with histories of child maltreatment.
