Sinopse

"Sacred Female Figures" explores the often-overlooked roles of women in shaping religious history and thought across diverse cultures. It challenges the notion of women as silent figures by illuminating their significant contributions as goddesses, prophets, founders, and leaders. The book investigates how female spiritual figures influenced theology, rituals, and social structures.

It examines the prevalence of goddesses in ancient pantheons and the impact of female prophets and religious founders on various movements. The book navigates societal constraints that historically limited women's religious participation while highlighting periods where female authority thrived.

It also emphasizes how divine femininity manifests across cultures and religious traditions. By analyzing historical narratives and cross-cultural comparisons, "Sacred Female Figures" provides a fresh perspective on gender equality and religious leadership, influencing contemporary discussions. The book progresses by exploring ancient goddesses, female prophets, and women in religious institutions.

Timothy Francis Leary (October 22, 1920 - May 31, 1996) was an American psychologist and author known for his strong advocacy of psychedelic drugs, particularly LSD. Evaluations of Leary are polarized, ranging from "bold oracle" to "publicity hound". According to poet Allen Ginsberg, he was "a hero of American consciousness", and writer Tom Robbins called him a "brave neuronaut". President Richard Nixon called him "the most dangerous man in America". During the 1960s and 1970s, at the height of the counterculture movement, Leary was arrested 36 times. The following recording was made in 1992.

This “wonderfully written” autobiographical account of a Vietnam vet’s war experiences “takes the reader to a strange time and place.” (Eric M. Bergerud, author of Red Thunder, Tropic Lightning)   In the summer of 1969, while America was landing on the moon or rocking out at Woodstock, Jim Ross left his home in Oklahoma to enter the U.S. Army. He arrived in Vietnam in February 1970 to serve his tour, first with the armored personnel carriers of the 2nd Battalion of the 22nd Infantry Regiment (the 2/22 or the “Triple Deuce”) of the 25th Infantry. Written from the perspective a kid barely out of high school whose mission was to kill communists and whose goal was to survive, Outside the Wire is a thoughtful, action-packed memoir of one American soldier’s combat tour in Vietnam. Ross served as a rifleman, machine gunner, tunnel rat, and demolitions man with the 25th infantry and 1st Cavalry divisions. Beginning with a tense ambush patrol,  Ross doesn't let up through a year of hair-raising night watches, soggy humps through the jungle, and deadly encounters with the North Vietnamese, including such notable campaigns as the Cambodian incursion.

Osho sees Zen not as a historical spiritual tradition but as the future spirituality of a humanity that has matured to the point that people no longer need religions controlled by priesthoods and based on fearful superstitions that cripple people's innate intelligence and divide them from one another.
This series of talks offers a deeper understanding of the underlying differences between Eastern and Western approaches to religion and the nature of consciousness. It's a beautiful introduction to a world where each individual has the capacity for an instant and profound understanding of existence and a rebirth of the trust in life that each of us is born with.
Dang Dang Doko Dang represents the sound of the drum beaten by a Zen master in an existential lesson for a disciple. As well as symbolizing the poetic quality of Zen, the title represents the special flavor of this collection of Osho's commentaries on well-known Zen stories. This volume is part of the Osho Classics series and also includes Osho's responses to questions about the meditation technique of Zazen.

Arthashastra by Kautilya (also known as Chanakya) is one of the most important and influential works on political strategy, governance, and economic administration from the ancient world. Written more than two thousand years ago in ancient India, this remarkable treatise offers a detailed guide to statecraft, leadership, diplomacy, and the management of a powerful and stable kingdom.

Kautilya, the renowned scholar and advisor to Chandragupta Maurya, composed this work as a practical manual for rulers and administrators. Drawing on his deep understanding of politics, economics, law, and military organization, he presents a comprehensive framework for governing a prosperous and secure state.

The text explores the duties and responsibilities of a ruler, emphasizing discipline, wisdom, and strategic thinking. According to Kautilya, a successful leader must balance authority with intelligence and foresight while ensuring the welfare and stability of the kingdom. The work provides detailed guidance on how a ruler should manage administration, maintain law and order, and protect the interests of the state.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Arthashastra is its systematic analysis of political strategy and diplomacy. Kautilya explains how alliances, negotiations, and intelligence gathering can influence the balance of power between kingdoms. He also discusses the role of espionage and information networks as tools for maintaining security and preventing threats.

In addition to political and military matters, the book also addresses economic policy, taxation, trade, agriculture, public works, and the regulation of markets. These sections reveal a sophisticated understanding of how economic strength contributes to the stability and prosperity of a state.

The work also outlines legal systems and judicial procedures, emphasizing fairness, accountability, and effective governance. Through these detailed discussions, Kautilya presents a vision of a well-organized state guided by careful planning and strategic leadership.

Although written in ancient times, many of the ideas presented in Arthashastra remain relevant to modern discussions about politics, leadership, and public administration. Its insights into power, diplomacy, and governance have drawn comparisons to other influential works on political strategy throughout history.

Rich in practical wisdom and historical significance, Arthashastra stands as a foundational text of political thought. It offers readers a fascinating glimpse into the sophisticated ideas of ancient Indian statecraft and remains a timeless study of leadership, strategy, and the art of governing a nation.

North to Boston - Life Histories...

Between World War II and 1980, tens of thousands of Black people moved to Boston from the South as part of the Great Migration, one of the most consequential mass movements of people in American history. Black migration from the South transformed the city, as it did urban areas across the country. North to Boston is the first book to examine that important subject.

Blake Gumprecht traces the history of this migration and explores its impacts in greater depth through the lives of ten individuals, each the subject of one chapter. Those chapters are short biographies based on extensive interviews by the author and are told in an engaging style that reflects the author's background as a journalist.

The ten people featured came from six southern states. They fled racism, limited opportunity, and hopelessness, and moved north in pursuit of better jobs, equal treatment, and greater freedom. They settled in neighborhoods such as Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan. They worked as teachers, factory workers, welders, and security guards. Their stories are emblematic of the experiences of Black people everywhere who left the South, and provide a rare glimpse into the lives of ordinary people living in one city's Black community.
