Synopsis

Prank History explores the profound influence of pranks and hoaxes throughout history, revealing how playful deceptions have triggered significant shifts in society, politics, and even economics. From royal jesters using humor to challenge authority to elaborate corporate schemes misleading entire nations, the book examines the psychology behind successful deceptions, the socio-political contexts that allow them to flourish, and their lasting consequences. These historical pranks demonstrate the human desire for amusement and the vulnerabilities within social structures.

The book progresses chronologically, starting with a historical foundation in ancient civilizations and moving through the Renaissance, before diving into modern corporate hoaxes. It emphasizes how pranks serve as social commentary, political protest, and even personal gain. One intriguing example is the "Piltdown Man" archaeological fraud, which exposed the interplay between scientific ambition, national pride, and public gullibility.

By blending historical analysis with insights from psychology, sociology, and media studies, Prank History offers a unique perspective on the long-term consequences of deception and its role in shaping cultural narratives.

Ultimately, Prank History argues that understanding past deceptions equips readers to become more critical thinkers and discerning consumers of information. The book analyzes the practical implications of pranks, including their impact on legal frameworks, ethical standards, and media practices, and also touches on the origins of "fake news". By studying past hoaxes, this book will lead to a deeper understanding of human behavior and the power of deception.

All Roads Led to Gettysburg - A...

    Troy D. Harman

It has long been a trope of Civil War history that Gettysburg was an accidental battlefield. Troy D. Harman argues for a new interpretation: once Lee invaded Pennsylvania and the Union army pursued, a battle at Gettysburg was entirely predictable, perhaps inevitable.

Most Civil War battles took place along major roads, railroads, and waterways. And yet this perspective hasn't been fully explored when it comes to Gettysburg.

Moreover, once the battle started, Harman argues, the blue and gray fought tactically for the two creeks that mark the battlefield in the east and the west as well as for the roadways that led to Gettysburg from all points of the compass. This is a perspective often overlooked in many accounts of the battle, which focus on the high ground—the Round Tops, Cemetery Hill—as key tactical objectives.

Gettysburg Ranger and historian Troy Harman draws on a lifetime of researching the Civil War and more than thirty years of studying the terrain of Gettysburg and south-central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland to reframe the story of the Battle of Gettysburg. In the process he shows there's still much to say about one of history's most written-about battles.

    Aspects of the Novel

    E. M. Forster

E.M. Forster's Aspects of the Novel is an innovative and effusive treatise on a literary form that, at the time of publication, had only recently begun to enjoy serious academic consideration.

First given as a series of lectures at Cambridge University, Aspects of the Novel is Forster's analysis of this great literary form. Here he rejects the 'pseudoscholarship' of historical criticism - 'that great demon of chronology' - that considers writers in terms of the period in which they wrote and instead asks us to imagine the great novelists working together in a single room. He discusses aspects of people, plot, fantasy and rhythm, making illuminating comparisons between novelists such as Proust and James, Dickens and Thackeray, Eliot and Dostoyevsky - the features shared by their books and the ways in which they differ. Written in a wonderfully engaging and conversational manner, this penetrating work of criticism is full of Forster's habitual irreverence, wit and wisdom.

    E. M. Forster (1879-1970) was a noted English author and critic and a member of the Bloomsbury group.

From Celtic druids and Viking Yule to the outright banning of Christmas for 400 years, The Broons, first footing and the Loony Dook, this is a joyous miscellany that showcases the creative, elaborate and sometimes downright bizarre aspects of Scottish Christmas and New Year, from the ancient past to the more recent present. It includes different local traditions, from those practised in the Borders all the way to the islands of Orkney and Shetland, as well as the nationwide pastimes enjoyed by everyone.
The book is packed with tradition, lore and legend, as well as poems, stories, carols, recipes, history, jokes and fun facts. Illustrated throughout with line drawings and black and white photographs.
Best enjoyed in front of an open fire with a glass of whisky and a black bun.

A BBC History Magazine and Aspects of History Book of the Year 2025
'Terrific – full of drama … it has profoundly altered my understanding of the Second World War' PATRICK BISHOP
FROM THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF SBS COMES AN EPIC HISTORY OF THE ALLIED VICTORY IN NORTH AFRICA DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
On 8 November 1942, British and American troops invaded French North Africa as part of Operation Torch, the largest amphibious operation of the war to date. The Germans responded by flooding troops into Tunisia and the stage was set for one of the most decisive clashes of the war.
For months the outcome hung in the balance. The Allies failed to capture Tunis before Christmas, and early in the New Year the legendary German commander Erwin Rommel ( the ‘ Desert Fox ’) inflicted a series of crushing defeats on inexperienced American troops in the mountain passes of central Tunisia. But once the two Allied armies – the First and the Eighth – had joined hands in southern Tunisia in early April, the defeat of Axis forces was inevitable. The end came on 13 May when the remnants of the First Italian Army surrendered to British troops in northern Tunisia, leaving the Allies ‘ masters of the North African shores ’.
It was, with Guadalcanal in the Pacific and Stalingrad in Russia, one of three Axis defeats in early 1943 that changed the course of the war. Historians have recognized the significance of the others, but not Tunisia which they have either ignored or characterized ( as the Americans did at the time ) as a sideshow. Yet it ended Axis sea power in the Mediterranean, destroyed more than 2,400 Axis aircraft ( 40 per cent of the Luftwaffe ’ s strength ), and resulted in the surrender of over 250,000 German and Italian troops, more than were captured at Stalingrad. Such was the scale of their defeat that the German public wryly dubbed it ‘ Tunisgrad ’.
It was the first campaign fought by the Anglo-American alliance, and would determine how and where the Allies would fight for the rest of the war. It was where America first brought to bear the full weight of its industrial strength, and where the Allies learned, after early setbacks, how to defeat the Germans with a combination of air, land and sea power. It featured many of the great commanders of the Second World War, including ‘ Ike ’ Eisenhower, George S. Patton Jr, Omar N. Bradley, Harold Alexander, Bernard Montgomery and Erwin Rommel. But the campaign ’ s chief significance is that it extinguished any lingering hopes in Italy that the war could be won and led, inexorably, to the dissolution of the Axis in Europe. By destroying the Axis it marked, for Hitler, the beginning of the end.
Tunisgrad is the first comprehensive 360-degree history, told from the perspective of all the combatants, and ranging in focus from politicians and senior commanders to ordinary servicemen fighting in and over the mountains of Tunisia, and across the Mediterranean. Using a variety of first-hand sources, it restores the campaign to its rightful place as a defining moment of the war
Saul David's latest work, Tunisgrad, is a comprehensive exploration of the conflicts that shaped the 20th century. As the Sunday Times bestselling author, David's non-fiction account of modern wars is an up-coming top pick for history enthusiasts.
For fans of Damien Lewis (SAS Daggers Drawn), Joseph Wheelan (Bitter Peleliu), Antony Beevor (D-Day), Al Murray (Arnhem), and Geoffrey Wawro (A Mad Catastrophe).
