Sinopse

Nile River Worship explores the deep religious significance of the Nile in ancient Egypt, demonstrating how the river was not just a resource but a divine entity. This book examines the deification of the Nile and its central role in shaping Egyptian civilization, arguing that environmental factors profoundly influenced their religious beliefs and societal structures.

One intriguing aspect is how the predictable flooding of the Nile dictated the agricultural calendar, impacting the social structure and economy. The book illustrates how the river's symbolism permeated Egyptian art, architecture, and even funerary practices, connecting life and afterlife in their cultural understanding.

The book progresses across three sections, beginning with the Nile as a deity, then exploring its life-sustaining role, and finally analyzing its lasting cultural impact. Ancient texts, archaeological findings, and artistic representations are examined to provide a holistic view of Nile worship.

The book uniquely combines religious aspects with influences on every facet of ancient Egyptian society, highlighting the interplay between practical needs and spiritual beliefs. By examining deities like Hapi and the rituals honoring the river, the book enriches our understanding of ancient Egyptian religion and history.

"I slept with faith and found a corpse in my arms on awakening; I drank and danced all night with doubt and found her a virgin in the morning."

"Having to talk destroys the symphony of silence."

"The sin which is unpardonable is knowingly and wilfully to reject truth, to fear knowledge lest that knowledge pander not to thy prejudices."

"I hardly ever talk- words seem such a waste, and they are none of them true. No one has yet invented a language from my point of view." Aleister Crowley

Aleister Crowley was born 12 October 1875. He was an English occultist, ceremonial magician, poet, painter, novelist, and mountaineer. Crowley founded the religion of Thelema, identifying himself as the prophet entrusted with guiding humanity into the Æon of Horus in the early 20th century. A prolific writer, he published widely over the course of his life. Born to a wealthy family in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, Crowley rejected his parents' fundamentalist Christian faith to pursue an interest in Western esotericism. He was educated at Trinity College at the University of Cambridge, where he focused his attentions on mountaineering and poetry. Some biographers allege that here Crowley was recruited into a British intelligence agency, further suggesting that he remained a spy throughout his life. In 1898 he joined the esoteric Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, where he was trained in ceremonial magic. Moving to Boleskine House by Loch Ness in Scotland, Crowley went mountaineering in Mexico before studying Hindu and Buddhist practices in India. He married Rose Edith Kelly and in 1904 they honeymooned in Cairo, Egypt Crowley declared his followers should "Do what thou wilt" and seek to align themselves with their True Will through the practice of magick. Herein is the definitive treasury of his long lost writings.

The streets of East London teem with different languages, cultures and religions. Private investigators Lee Arnold and Mumtaz Hakim are well-versed in the community's tensions, the sad day-to-day reality that includes the desecration of graves at Plashet Jewish cemetery in East Ham. However, the destruction of these final resting places leads to a disturbing discovery - one of the damaged coffins does not contain human remains, but instead a sculpture of a man made of clay. This so-called 'golem', a term from Jewish myth given to a figure brought to life by supernatural means, proves intriguing to Arnold and Hakim, even more so when it is stolen in an armed raid from a police storage facility, leaving a man dead in its wake. The case leads the pair into the past in London and Prague, and onto the trail of a jewel worth killing for.

The first Christians were weird. Just how weird is often lost on today's believers.

Within Roman society, the earliest Christians stood out for the oddness of their beliefs and practices. They believed unusual things, worshiped God in strange ways, and lived a unique lifestyle. They practiced a whole new way of thinking about and doing religion that would have been seen as bizarre and dangerous when compared to Roman religion and most other religions of the ancient world.

Award-winning author, blogger, speaker, and New Testament teacher Nijay Gupta traces the emerging Christian faith in its Roman context in this accessible and engaging book. Christianity would have been seen as radical in the Roman world, but some found this new religion attractive and compelling. The first Christians dared to be different, pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable, transformed how people thought about religion, and started a movement that grew like wildfire. This book shows how the example of the earliest Christians can offer today's believers encouragement and hope.
