Sinopse

"Mount Rushmore" explores the multifaceted story behind the iconic sculpture carved into the Black Hills, examining its construction, the figures it portrays, and the controversies it embodies. The book delves into how this colossal monument, intended to draw tourism to South Dakota, became a complex symbol of American achievement intertwined with the displacement of the Lakota Sioux, who consider the Black Hills sacred land. Understanding the monument requires acknowledging both its artistic and architectural grandeur and the fraught history of westward expansion.

The book examines the selection of Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor, and the innovative engineering techniques employed to carve the presidential faces, including the contributions of local miners. It dedicates significant attention to the four presidents depicted—Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt—analyzing the rationale behind their inclusion and the conflicting interpretations of their legacies.

Drawing upon archival documents, personal papers, and oral histories, the book progresses from the monument's conception to its ongoing debates, offering a comprehensive account that connects American history, Native American studies, and art history. This exploration provides a nuanced perspective, acknowledging Mount Rushmore as a symbol of American democracy while critically examining its historical context and ethical considerations.

By addressing ongoing debates and alternative proposals, the book encourages readers to engage critically with the complex legacy of Mount Rushmore and its place in American society, enriching the understanding of historical memory and the challenges of preserving cultural heritage.

Tuni’s father began sexually abusing her when she was just four years old. Her mother, though aware of the abuse, was a silent witness—one either incapable or unwilling to intervene—and the abuse continued until Tuni was eleven. Three years later, when Tuni was fourteen, she was raped by an adult actor who was part of her cast in a professional theater production. These traumas would go on to shape much of her life.
Underwater Daughter follows how Tuni grappled with her relationship with her parents, the aftermath of her rape, an eating disorder, drug and alcohol excesses, and shame as she came of age and began to build a life. In order to not lose her inner innocence, in order to protect herself, in order to believe in love, she began early on to create imaginary worlds into which she could escape—to use dreams to transport her away from her fears. By early adulthood, she was well practiced at slapping lipstick (pink, frosty, kiss-me, gloss-over, perfect lipstick) over whatever darkness might be bubbling beneath. Hired by a dance company right out of high school, she found success as a dancer in Chicago and New York, but in her personal and emotional life, she continued to struggle. Ultimately, it took her decades of dancing, hiding, faking, fucking, costuming, implanting, dissociating, marrying, divorcing, and purging—all while staying silent about her past trauma—before a bike accident at age fifty-five forced her to stop and truly take stock of her life. As she did, she came to a resting place, finally, in regard to her father; developed the loving relationship she’d always wanted with her mother; and came to understand that, in the end, love is all anyone wants—or needs.

    Perpetual Peace A Philosophic...

    Immanuel Kant

This essay, written in 1795, puts forth a plan for a lasting peace between nations and peoples. Kant puts forth necessary means to any peace, and argues that nations can be brought into federation with one another without loss of sovereignty. In one translation, telling of the historical impact of this essay, this federation is called a “league of nations.” The supplements and appendices are of considerable interest on their own. The supplements contain an argument regarding the use which nature makes of war, and the way in which nature, in the end, impels us towards peace. The appendices return to the question of whether his theory is mere theory, or whether it bears translation into practice. In this, he distinguishes between the moral politician and the political moralist, pointing out ways in which practical considerations conceal and excuse behavior that leads us towards discord and war. This essay continues to be relevant, and of great importance today, much to our shame. We hope still to find the perpetual peace which Kant argued as a obligatory goal, and we still have need of fear that we will, as Kant warned, “find perpetual peace only in the wide tomb which conceals all the horrible deeds of violence along with their perpetrators. - Summary by D.E. Wittkower

It was a long, sometimes devastating, journey Maxine was forced to undertake through the depths of despair as a preschooler, and then on through a tumultuous adolescence during which she was ignored yet at the same time abused by a uncaring mother who daily left her with a malevolent grandmother who similarly mistreated her.
Instructed by her divorced mother to no longer call her Mama, in an effort to enhance her own marketability as a perspective wife to some unsuspecting man.
Fortunately, Maxine was endowed with the guiles and street smarts that allowed her to survive. The pain of her youth was converted, of necessity, into the toughness and unwillingness to accept what appeared to be inevitable. As the result of her own perseverance and courage she was accepted and graduated from Brooklyn College.
Separating herself from her horrendous past, she resurrected her life by achieving success as a school teacher, a wife and, ultimately, a mother and grandmother. Along the way, she became proficient as a stock trader, thus providing herself and her family the additional financial and emotional security she was deprived of in her early years.
Maxine reflects on her life as an independent success story.
