Sinopsis

"Motorbike History" presents a fascinating journey through 150 years of motorcycle engineering and innovation, tracing the evolution from the 1867 steam-powered velocipede to today's advanced superbikes. The book expertly navigates three pivotal technological watersheds: the birth of production motorcycles in the late 19th century, the post-World War II performance boom, and the modern era of electronic and environmental advances.

Through detailed technical drawings, patent documentation, and period photographs, readers gain deep insights into how pioneering inventors like Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach established the fundamental architecture that would shape motorcycle development for generations. The narrative skillfully weaves together engineering principles with historical context, examining how military requirements, materials science, and aerodynamics influenced motorcycle design.

Readers follow the progression of crucial developments in engine configurations, frame geometry, and suspension systems through chronologically organized chapters. The book's systematic analysis covers both breakthrough successes and instructive failures, offering valuable insights into why certain design approaches prevailed while others fell by the wayside.

Written for both technical and non-technical audiences, this comprehensive work makes complex mechanical concepts accessible through clear diagrams and straightforward explanations. The book stands out for its thorough examination of motorcycle development's relationship with broader technological progress, from the transition of belt to chain drives to the current evolution toward electric power. By connecting engineering innovation with practical application, it serves as an invaluable resource for enthusiasts, professionals, and students interested in mechanical engineering and transportation history.

Given that Lewis and Clark remain so famous, it was inevitable that the other American explorers would be overlooked, particularly William Eaton, the hero of the Battle of Derna in the Barnaby Wars, and Zebulon Montgomery Pike, the explorer of the Mississippi. In the case of Pike, Orsi suggests that the explorer is overlooked and in some cases slighted due to what the expeditions did and did not accomplish. Eaton and Pike represented “the first wave of Manifest Destiny, expanding the republican principles of liberty and citizenship in the world.”[1]
Contrasted to that patriotic sentiment are caveats and questions. The career of Zebulon Pike was “dominated by ambiguously motivated explorations of the American West.”[2] With the procurement of the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the nation, Pike had the full force of American authority at his disposal, and his travels through the Colorado Rockies into New Mexico pushed the boundaries between America and Spain. Captured by Spanish officials for illegal entry, he was finally released back into American custody after a year’s time with a volume of new information on Spanish territory, its economy, and its military configuration. This sparked a debate about whether the capture was planned by the American government itself.
Pike’s return is still debated, as is his relationship with General James Wilkinson and Aaron Burr. The controversy is relevant to Burr’s alleged conspiracy to establish a competing empire in the American Southwest, or perhaps as a way of conquering Spanish America without involving the White House. Pike’s papers, confiscated by the Spanish, have complicated the search for the truth, and any evidence of his complicity remains confidential, in part because of the unpredictable explorer’s unpredictable demise.

This book contains these two titles:
Exploitation - Economic inequality has become one of the defining challenges of our era, shaping the trajectory of societies across the globe. The income gap between the wealthiest and the poorest continues to widen, creating a stark divide that influences not only financial security but also access to education, healthcare, and opportunities. This growing disparity raises questions about the fairness of our systems and the sustainability of our futures. The roots of inequality are complex, intertwining historical legacies with contemporary policies and practices. In many nations, the transition from agrarian economies to industrialized and globalized markets created unprecedented wealth. However, this wealth was not evenly distributed. The rise of capitalism, technological advancements, and shifts in labor dynamics often concentrated power and resources in the hands of a few, leaving vast populations struggling to make ends meet.
War Crimes - The need for accountability in the face of war crimes is critical. It is not only about bringing perpetrators to justice but also about establishing a global standard that deters such crimes in the future. The introduction of international laws and institutions aimed at prosecuting war crimes marks a pivotal shift in the international community's approach to warfare. The atrocities committed during World War II, particularly the Holocaust and other acts of genocide, were a wake-up call for the global community. This led to the creation of the Nuremberg Trials, the first real attempt to hold individuals accountable for war crimes, and set the foundation for modern international law.

“A lyrical, extremely rich narrative of loss, memory, and trauma.” — STARRED review, Kirkus Reviews

An extraordinary account of survival in Syria’s most notorious military prisons that is written with “brutal clarity — and yet, there is a poetic quality to the telling.” — Frances Itani, award-winning author of Deafening and Remembering the Bones

Jamal Saeed arrived as a refugee in Canada in 2016. In his native Syria, as a young man, his writing pushed both social and political norms. For this reason, as well as his opposition to the regimes of the al-Assads, he was imprisoned on three occasions for a total of 12 years. In each instance, he was held without formal charge and without judicial process.

My Road from Damascus not only tells the story of Saeed’s severe years in Syria’s most notorious military prisons but also his life during the country’s dramatic changes. Saeed chronicles modern Syria from the 1950s right up to his escape to Canada in 2016, recounting its descent from a country of potential to a pawn of cynical and corrupt powers. He paints a picture of village life, his youthful love affairs, his rebellion as a young Marxist, and his evolution into a free thinker, living in hiding as a teenager for 30 months while being hunted by the secret police. He recalls his brutal prison years, his final release, and his family’s harrowing escape to Canada.

While many prison memoirs focus on the cruelty of incarceration, My Road from Damascus offers a tapestry of Saeed’s whole life. It looks squarely at brutality but also at beauty and poetry, hope and love.
