Sinopsis

"Lantern Story" illuminates the captivating history and technological evolution of lanterns, tracing their journey from ancient light sources to precursors of modern lighting. The book reveals how these seemingly simple devices profoundly impacted human societies, urban development, and our relationship with the night. Lanterns weren't just functional tools; they served as symbols of safety and community.

This exploration unfolds in three parts, beginning with the earliest lantern forms and their diverse applications. It then examines the period of innovation fueled by new materials and advancements in fuel sources, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. Finally, the book analyzes the lantern's decline with the advent of electric lighting, its adaptation into specialized roles, and its surprising legacy in contemporary design.

The book uniquely emphasizes the cultural narratives surrounding lanterns, highlighting their symbolism across different cultures and time periods.

Sacred Drugs explores the numerous ways in which psychoactive substances, from alcohol to psilocybin, cannabis to pharmaceuticals, and coffee to tobacco, intersect with religious life. This cutting-edge volume acknowledges the ubiquity of drug use in American society and that, in fact, being drugged with an altered state of consciousness is a common feature of American life today, as it has been throughout human history and across global ancient cultures. Its focus is on the undeniable and pervasive evidence that drugs are often consumed for religious purposes.
Sacred Drugs touches on the presence of drugs in a number of religious traditions, including Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam. It also delves into the religious textures, sensibilities, and histories of psychoactive agents, sometimes intersecting with these traditions, sometimes with Indigenous cultures around the world, and sometimes not directly related to any particular religion, but instead related to more basic existential religious concerns: a mortal body that suffers, ages, and dies, but also yearns for transcendence, healing, and ecstasy; or the desire to uncover and live true to one's identity, as well as to find energizing communities that bind individuals together; or how to counter chaos, meaninglessness, and disorder. This controversial book will be the go-to volume for readers interested in the complex relationship between religious life and psychoactive substances.

Whether you remember them or not, dreams are a normal part of sleep. Everyone dreams for about two hours per night, and dreams can occur during any stage of sleep, although they're most vivid during the REM phase. Suppose you've ever woken up from a happy dream feeling relaxed and rested or a scary one feeling on edge. In that case, you might have wondered whether the content of your shut-eye reveries can make a difference in your overall sleep quality.Dream content often relates back to what's happening in your waking life. If you're experiencing low stress and plenty of satisfaction in your day-to-day life, you may have more positive dreams. By contrast, if you're depressed or anxious during the day, you may have more unpleasant dreams and compromised sleep quality at night. The good news is that while you cannot control your dreams directly, you can work on improving your state of mind during the day. This book investigates theories concerning the function of dreams and dreams, starting with Freud's contributions to the present day. Several ideas within psychodynamic, evolutionary, and neurocognitive perspectives are presented and discussed in light of relevant empirical research. These include theories that postulate that the function of dreaming is to guard sleep and approaches which propose that dreaming poses an adaptive advantage either by allowing for the simulation and rehearsal of threat avoidance behaviors, practicing social skills, solving emotional or intellectual problems, or aids us in the consolidation of memories.

How did I get started in Louisa May Alcott's research? Is Beth really just part of the sick girl trope or is there more in her? and why is Friedrich from Germany? Why did the film-makers erase Laurie's backstory? What is Amy's relationship with Catholicism? was Louisa May Alcott religious? Did she want to get married? are Fritz and Laurie really based on men in her life? I've got so many questions from you guys that I will answer them in this excellent Little Women Q&A. One thing that surprised me was that it was really difficult to find studies on Laurie. I was interested in Laurie as an individual, and why he behaves the way he does. I was expecting to find a lot about him because Laurie is a popular character, at least according to the filmmakers, a lot more popular than Friedrich, and I didn't find anything about him. Nothing about him being an orphan. The tricky relationship that he has with his grandfather or why he's hanging in Jo´s apron strings. There are scenes in Little Women where Laurie is annoyed when Jo is lecturing him, but he's still addicted to her care. Maybe Amy's screen portrayals are the reason why there hasn't been that much research made on May Alcott by scholars .I think the same applies to Laurie and Friedrich in films. Laurie is this pretty guy who Jo rejects. Then in a lot of the studies that I read, the writer was asking why did Louisa May Alcott marry Jo to an old German and not to the rich and handsome young Laurie? Okay. Friedrich is not old. He's 39. If you read letters between Louisa and her publisher, Thomas Niles, Louisa was the one who came up with all the marriages. When I was reading these essays, it was so frustrating because the book doesn't show Laurie as this manic pixie dream boy, as the movies do, but more as a seriously troubled young man.

The #MeToo Effect - What Happens...

    Leigh Gilmore

The #MeToo movement inspired millions to testify to the widespread experience of sexual violence. More broadly, it shifted the deeply ingrained response to women's accounts of sexual violence from doubting all of them to believing some of them. What changed?

Leigh Gilmore provides a new account of #MeToo that reveals how storytelling by survivors propelled the call for sexual justice beyond courts and high-profile cases. At a time when the cultural conversation was fixated on appeals to legal and bureaucratic systems, narrative activism—storytelling in the service of social change—elevated survivors as authorities. Their testimony fused credibility and accountability into the #MeToo effect: uniting millions of separate accounts into an existential demand for justice and the right to be heard.

Gilmore reframes #MeToo as a breakthrough moment within a longer history of feminist thought and activism. She analyzes autobiographical storytelling in intersectional and antirape activism and traces how literary representations of sexual violence dating from antiquity intertwine with cultural notions of doubt, obligation, and agency. By focusing on the intersectional prehistory of #MeToo, Gilmore sheds light on how survivors have used narrative to frame sexual violence as an urgent problem requiring structural solutions in diverse contexts.
