  What Is Metaphysics What Is...

  This recording contains four important and related works by Heidegger: 'What Is Philosophy', 'What Is Metaphysics', 'On the Essence of Truth' and 'The Question of Being'. 
   
  It starts with 'What Is Philosophy', which originated as a lecture given in Normandy in 1955, and was first published a year later. The translators acknowledge that 'What Is Metaphysics' is often regarded as a particularly key work, they feel that 'a better preliminary understanding' of Heidegger can be obtained from 'What is Philosophy'. They write: Heidegger 'is concerned with the fact that philosophy has lost its receptivity to the Being of being/entity. In other words, philosophy no longer seeks the groundless ground of Being which allows us to ask meaningful questions about being/entity, or its appearances. Heidegger uses Being as the ‘inner light’, that illumination through which we become conscious of our meaning or of our existence and of existence itself. The light allows us to know that we are 'beings'. 
   
  The second work on this recording, then, is the more famous essay 'What Is Metaphysics', published in 1929, to which some 14 years later he added a 'Postscript'. Both texts are presented here. Heidegger states that rather than enter into a discussion about metaphysics, he sets out to ‘discuss a definite metaphysical question.... Our project begins with the presentation of a metaphysical question, then goes on to its development and ends with its answer'. 
   
  In 'On the Essence of Truth', (1930) Heidegger explains: 'The question as to the nature of truth is not concerned with whether truth is the truth of practical experience or of economic calculation...or the truth of scientific research or art...or religious belief...but what is ‘the mark of truth of every kind.' 
   
  The final essay on this recording is 'The Question of Being' (1955). Its original title, (in a literal translation from German), was 'Concerning the Line', and was included in a publication honouring the 60th birthday of the philosopher Ernst Jünger. Heidegger wrote it in the form of a letter in response to an earlier treatise Jünger dedicated to Heidegger called 'Across the Line'. Heidegger questions Jünger’s notion of ‘zero line’, of nihilism: the essence of nihilism stems from a discussion of Being as being/entity.

  The Second Treatise of Government is a political treatise written by English philosopher John Locke in 1689. It is considered one of the most important works on political philosophy, as it presents Locke's ideas on the natural rights of individuals and the proper role and limits of government in a society based on the consent of the governed. 
  In the Second Treatise, Locke argues that all individuals have natural rights to life, liberty, and property, which cannot be taken away by any authority, including the government. These rights are inherent and universal, and are not granted by any social contract or agreement. 
  Locke also argues that governments are formed by the consent of the governed, and are therefore obligated to protect the natural rights of their citizens. He asserts that the purpose of government is to promote the common good, and that governments that fail to do so may be overthrown by the people. 
  Moreover, Locke suggests that there are limits to the power of government, and that individuals have the right to resist or even overthrow a government that becomes tyrannical or violates their natural rights. 
  The Second Treatise of Government has had a significant impact on political theory and the development of democratic governance. It influenced the United States Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, as well as many other constitutions around the world.

  The Aitareya Upanishad, which dates back to somewhere around 600-500 BCE, takes us through a journey … the journey of creation. It then leads us through the evolutionary changes that have brought us into this day and age and beyond, into the stage of existence that the ancient Hindus believed would come next. We were all created, the Hindus tell us, for a reason, and we are all evolving towards a particular state of beingness.  
  How can the Hindus be so sure that evolution is fact, and how can they be so sure that there is some sort of Intelligence behind it all? The Hindu religion is the oldest on earth. Their ancestors claim to have actually witnessed a small portion of evolution in action, and through their experiences, also claim to have discovered the underlying intent of life (both in the general and the individual sense). This work goes into these experiences and the insights the Hindus claim to have gained from them. 
  Also included in this narrative is an early Hindu concept of time and space that is extremely difficult to wrapt the human mind around. These concepts, however, coincide very closely with the findings of modern physics. 
  This work is my interpretation of the Aitareya Upanishad. I have endeavored to simplify its teachings, expand where needed, and include modern concepts, discoveries, and quotes to make the central concepts found within it more digestible to modern seekers, especially beginners.
