Sinopse

"Holy Roman Empire" presents a fascinating exploration of one of history's most enduring and complex political entities, tracing its evolution from Otto I's coronation in 962 CE to its dissolution in 1806. This comprehensive study reveals how this unique medieval powerhouse shaped European history through its distinctive blend of imperial authority, religious influence, and territorial autonomy.

The book skillfully navigates through the Empire's intricate political structure, where power was distributed among hundreds of semi-autonomous territories, making it fundamentally different from other European monarchies of its time. Through careful analysis of primary sources, including imperial decrees and ecclesiastical documents, the narrative examines crucial turning points such as the Golden Bull of 1356, which formalized the election process of Holy Roman Emperors, and the transformative Thirty Years' War.

The author draws from recent archaeological findings and previously untranslated medieval documents to offer fresh perspectives on how this political entity maintained its influence despite constant internal tensions and external pressures. The book progresses chronologically while weaving in thematic analyses of legal, economic, and cultural developments, demonstrating how the Empire's federal structure created a lasting impact on modern European politics and law.

From Charlemagne's influence to Maximilian I's reforms, the study illuminates how this remarkable political experiment managed to sustain itself for nearly a millennium, leaving an indelible mark on concepts of sovereignty, federalism, and international relations that continue to resonate in contemporary European governance.

The Chuang Tsu is one of the most important books in Chinese literature and philosophy. It is one of the two foundational texts of Daoism. Also titled Zhuangzi, it is a commentary and extension of the Dao de Jing/Tao Te Ching, in the same way that Mencius' Analects are an exploration of Confucius' thought. Written in around 300BCE during the Warring States period, it is a collection of anecdotes, fables, and stories that are as silly and funny as they are profound and thought provoking.Where the Dao De Jing is a distilled and poetic exploration of the Way, Zhuangi takes a much more human and real-world path through the mysteries of the Dao. Using often humorous anecdotes, allegories, parables and fables mixed with conversations about particular aspects of the Way.James Legge’s translation is perhaps the most sophisticated and exacting one in existence. It carries as much as possible of the subtlety and detail in the original masterwork. It is regarded as one of the greatest literary works in all of Chinese history, and has been called "the most important pre-Qin text for the study of Chinese literature." Its main themes are of spontaneity in action and of freedom from the human world and its conventions. The fables and anecdotes in the text illustrate the illusion of distinctions between good and bad, large and small, life and death, and human and nature. While other ancient Chinese philosophers focused on moral and personal duty, Zhuangzi promoted carefree wandering and becoming one with "the Way" (Dào 道) by following nature. It has influenced great Chinese and Western writers for more than 2000 years, including Oscar Wilde, Yeats, Nietzsche, Sima Xiangru, Li Bai, Su Shi and Lu You.

    The first Christians were weird.

Within Roman society, the earliest Christians stood out for the oddness of their beliefs and practices. They believed unusual things, worshiped God in strange ways, and practiced a whole new way of doing religion that would have been viewed as bizarre and dangerous compared to other religions of the ancient world.

In Strange Religion, award-winning author and New Testament teacher Nijay Gupta traces the emerging Christian faith in its Roman context, showing how the first Christians

    ● dared to be different and pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable
    ● believed, worshipped, and lived in radical ways
    ● transformed how others thought about religion
    ● started a movement that grew like wildfire

Brought to life with numerous images, this book shows how the example of the earliest Christians can offer today's believers encouragement and hope.

    Outside Literary Studies - Black...

A timely reconsideration of the history of the profession, Outside Literary Studies investigates how midcentury Black writers built a critical practice tuned to the struggle against racism and colonialism.

This striking contribution to Black literary studies examines the practices of Black writers in the mid-twentieth century to revise our understanding of the institutionalization of literary studies in America. Andy Hines uncovers a vibrant history of interpretive resistance to university-based New Criticism by Black writers of the American left. These include well-known figures such as Langston Hughes and Lorraine Hansberry as well as still underappreciated writers like Melvin B. Tolson and Doxey Wilkerson. In their critical practice, these and other Black writers levied their critique from “outside” venues: behind the closed doors of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, in the classroom at a communist labor school under FBI surveillance, and in a host of journals. From these vantages, Black writers not only called out the racist assumptions of the New Criticism, but also defined Black literary and interpretive practices to support communist and other radical world-making efforts in the mid-twentieth century. Hines’s book thus offers a number of urgent contributions to literary studies: it spotlights a canon of Black literary texts that belong to an important era of anti-racist struggle, and it fills in the pre-history of the rise of Black studies and of ongoing Black dissent against the neoliberal university.
