Sinopse

Harappan Trade explores the vital role of trade in the Indus Valley Civilization, revealing how economic networks shaped their society and culture. Dismissing the idea that agriculture was the sole driver of development, the book highlights the Indus Valley as a key player in the Bronze Age economy through extensive trade routes. It examines the exchange of goods like copper and precious stones, as well as agricultural surpluses, revealing a complex system that facilitated cultural exchange.

The book progresses from establishing the geographical and social context of the Harappan civilization to examining major trade routes, including maritime trade with Mesopotamia (referred to as Meluhha in ancient texts) and overland routes to Central Asia. By analyzing artifacts, seals, and employing archaeometry, Harappan Trade paints a vivid picture of the Harappan society’s interconnectedness. It further delves into the social and political implications, such as the roles of merchants and the impact on social stratification, before discussing the decline of trade and its possible link to the civilization's collapse.

Nineveh was an age-old Assyrian city in Upper Mesopotamia, near Mosul in modern-day northern Iraq. It was the capital and biggest city of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, and the world's biggest city for some decades, and is on the eastern bank of the Tigris River. It's now a prevalent name for the portion of Mosul that's on the Tigris' eastern bank, and it is also the name of the nation's Nineveh Governorate.
It was the world's largest city for about fifty years till it was sacked by a union of its previous subject tribes, including but not limited to the Babylonians, Medes, Persians, Scythians, and Cimmerians, in the year 612 BC, following a severe period of civil dispute in Assyria. The city was never ever a political or administrative center again, though it was the seat of a Christian bishop by Late Antiquity. Throughout the Middle Ages, it weakened in contrast to Mosul and was mainly deserted by the 13th century AD.
In the Bible, it has been mentioned several times, and it is the center of attention in the story of Jonah, who was swallowed up by a whale or fish and spat out on the beach, only to hear from God that he still needed to go to Nineveh and give the people a chance to repent.
There is much more to this mysterious city of the ancient. Learn more by reading or listening to this book!

    Results - Getting Beyond...

Governor Charlie Baker, one of the most popular governors in the United States, with a reputation for getting things done, wants to put the service back into public service: "Wedge issues may be great for making headlines," he writes, "but they do not move us forward. Success is measured by what we accomplish together. Our obligation to the people we serve is too important to place politics and partisanship before progress and results."

For the Governor and his longtime associate Steve Kadish, these words are much more than political platitudes. They are at the heart of a method for delivering results—and getting past politics—the two developed while working together in top leadership positions in the public and private sectors.

Distilled into a four-step framework, Results is the much-needed implementation guide for anyone in public service, as well as for leaders and managers in large organizations hamstrung by bureaucracy and politics. With a broad range of examples, Baker, a Republican, and Kadish, a Democrat, show how to move from identifying problems to achieving results in a way that bridges divides instead of exacerbating them. They show how government can be an engine of positive change and an example of effective operation, not just a hopeless bureaucracy.

The American workplace exhibits a growing imbalance when it comes to human identity. Leaders are frequently defined in the absence of their critical social identifiers, but the exclusion of these identifiers is a mistake and ignores essential physical, cultural, and spiritual realities. Their exclusion is especially problematic for leaders of the Black identity and the Christian faith. Color-blind ideology harms people of color, while religion-blind systems damage people of faith, and both are especially problematic for individuals who reckon with both realities.

Rather than abandoning an individual's social identities, the ones we choose and the ones we do not, Leading While Black draws on the lived experiences of executive-level leaders of the Christian faith and Black identity, and offers a testament to the power of a living God in the social fabric of public life. Instead of ignoring the narrative arc of social identities and the weight they carry when considering an individual's conception of leadership, Torrance Jones leans into the value of those identities and asserts their integral importance for Black leaders and for those who work with and for Black voices.

Ramses II, also known as Ramses the Great, ascended to the throne of Egypt at the age of around twenty-five, marking the beginning of one of the most illustrious reigns in ancient Egyptian history. Born to Seti I and Queen Tuya, Ramses was the second son in a royal family with a rich history of military conquest and religious devotion. His early life was marked by a deep connection to his father, who was a powerful Pharaoh and who taught him the ways of leadership, military strategy, and governance.
Ramses II’s rise to power was in part due to the untimely death of his older brother, Amunherkhepeshef. His subsequent coronation followed the traditional Egyptian custom, but Ramses’s reign would quickly set him apart from his predecessors. Under Seti I’s rule, Egypt had already gained considerable strength, and Ramses inherited an empire that was well-positioned for further military expansion. Yet, it was his own brilliance, both as a military leader and as a strategist, that allowed him to solidify his place as one of the greatest Pharaohs of Egypt.
One of the first significant moments of his reign was his involvement in the Battle of Kadesh. Although young at the time, Ramses’s leadership during this critical battle would define his reputation as a warrior king. Despite facing a large Hittite force, Ramses II's audacity and resilience ensured Egypt's power remained strong. Though the battle ended in a stalemate, Ramses managed to secure his status through subsequent peace negotiations, leaving a lasting legacy on Egypt’s military and political landscape.
