Synopsis

Fatima Apparitions explores the religious history surrounding the reported Marian apparitions in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. This period, marked by World War I, saw the emergence of messages emphasizing faith, penance, and warnings, influencing both the Catholic world and wider geopolitical events. The book investigates how these events shaped Catholic piety, influenced anti-communist sentiments, and sparked lasting debates about faith and reason. One intriguing aspect is the "Miracle of the Sun," witnessed by thousands, adding a layer of mystique to the apparitions.

The book unfolds by first introducing the historical context and biographies of the three visionaries: Lúcia Santos, Jacinta Marto, and Francisco Marto. It then delves into the three secrets revealed to the children, analyzing their interpretations and impact. Finally, it assesses Fatima's legacy in the 21st century, addressing controversies and exploring its practical implications for contemporary believers. It presents information from Church documents, eyewitness accounts, and scholarly analyses, aiming to provide a balanced understanding of the Fatima phenomenon.

How to heal the psychological wounds of an abused child? How can we restore security to a neglected child? How can we help a child and his parents create an emotional bond? How can an adopted child reconcile his or her successive lives? Confronted with parents who are unaffectionate, depressive, absent or excluded, a child can become withdrawn, panic-stricken by fear of abandonment, violent or unable to express him/herself in words or actions.
In France, over 300,000 children are under protective care. Dr. Daniel Rousseau, who has worked in a nursery run by the French child welfare agency (Aide sociale à l’enfance), uses case studies to explain how these abused children invent solutions to survive and grow up, sometimes even without their parents.

Human beings have always questioned their identity in an attempt to understand themselves better and to develop. With the development of our societies and especially the new technological revolutions, the search for the self has become more perilous and dangerous because it is less controlled.
In this essay, Thierry Delcourt discusses the mechanisms at play that undermine our identity. Based on a clinical examination of the teenagers and young adults he follows on a daily basis, he questions our psyche in the face of societal upheavals: Are we going to become virtual, to the point of criminalizing all non-consensual contact and, in fact, reducing social empathy? What are the neuropsychic consequences of AI? What are the consequences of the war in Ukraine and Palestine on our identity? What are the disorders related to contact with YouTubers, blockbusters and manga? The disorders related to the questioning of gender and sexuality? To the radicalization of the political debate, or even to the seizure of power by minorities? To drug use, which is increasing year on year? The search for altered states of consciousness and paranormal phenomena, two very strong trends among young people at the moment?
These disorders affect us all at one time or another in our lives, and particularly in the fragile moments of our development, such as for young people confronted with the world, its constraints and its turmoil.
Secondly, the psychiatrist provides us with avenues for constructing our identity. “The question is not ‘things were better before’, but 'what do we do with the new social, political and economic order and the transformation of the psyche? How can we resist, describe, criticize, get involved, choose, invent, subvert, play, intervene and impose in order to construct our identity properly?

In June 1722, Ashton was captured by pirates while fishing near the coast of Nova Scotia. In the Boston News Letter of 9 July 1722, Ashton was listed as being one of those captured by the pirate Edward Low. As Ashton refused to co-operate with the pirates, he was often threatened. He managed to escape in March 1723 when the pirates landed at Roatán Island in the Bay Islands of Honduras, hiding in the jungle until the pirates decided to depart without him. He survived for 16 months, in spite of many insects, tropical heat and alligators. In the beginning he seems to have eaten only fruits, because he only had his hands to collect food; he could not kill any animal. He had no equipment at all until he met another castaway, an Englishman. The Englishman disappeared after a few days but he left behind a knife, gunpowder, tobacco and more. Ashton could now kill tortoises and crayfish and make fires to have hot meals. Ashton was finally rescued by the Diamond, a ship from Salem, New England.
