Sinopse

Famous Skyscrapers explores the captivating history and cultural impact of iconic skyscrapers around the world. More than just feats of engineering, these towering structures reflect the aspirations and values of the societies that built them, reshaping city skylines and influencing urban planning.

The book examines the evolution of skyscraper design, highlighting how innovations in structural engineering, such as the invention of the elevator and steel-frame construction, enabled the construction of progressively taller buildings.

The book adopts a narrative non-fiction approach, guiding readers through the multifaceted story of skyscrapers, from the early pioneers like Louis Sullivan to the modern marvels in cities like Dubai and Shanghai. It delves into the technical aspects, such as wind-resistant design, and explores the impact of skyscrapers on urban environments, addressing debates surrounding their environmental impact and social equity.

Each chapter builds upon the previous ones, providing a comprehensive overview of how these structures have shaped our cities and cultural identity. By examining architectural drawings, engineering reports, and historical documents, Famous Skyscrapers reveals the complex interplay of factors that have propelled skyscraper construction. It shows how skyscrapers not only represent architectural achievements but also serve as symbols of economic power.

Japanese Woodcut is a complete guide to the art and practice of 'mokuhanga'. It explains the delicate lines, luminous colour and intriguing compositions that first influenced the Impressionists in the nineteenth century, and presents this rich art form as a compelling and diverse technique for the printmaker of today. With over 400 illustrations, this book is a beautiful companion for everyone interested in exploring and understanding the great possibilities of this enduring technique.
This book explains the technique which is now acclaimed and practised widely in the West. Its popular success is partly because the process is entirely non-toxic and environmentally friendly, but also because it allies the certainties of woodcut with the nuance of watercolour. In so doing, it has opened up a whole new landscape for contemporary printmakers.
As well as explaining the full process from design to cut, it pays particular attention to printing and different methods of achieving specific effects for the more advanced, including printing larger woodblocks. The final chapter features a range of prints from leading practitioners and celebrates the success of this unique art form.

'Outstanding' - The Guardian 'Judith Mackrell has done an incredible job in bringing to life the stories of these two great artists' - Anthony D’Offay'This is a must read . . . a deeply moving account of a family bursting with talent' - Anne SebbaIn Artists, Siblings, Visionaries, acclaimed biographer Judith Mackrell turns her attention to British brother and sister artists Gwen and Augustus John.In many ways they were polar opposites. Augustus was the larger of the two; vivid, volatile and promiscuous, he was a hero among romantics and bohemians, celebrated as one of the great British talents of his generation. As a woman, Gwen's place in the art world was much smaller, and her private way of working and reserved nature meant it was only long after her death that her tremendous gifts were fully acknowledged. But her temperament was as turbulent as her brother's. She formed passionate attachments to men and woman, including a long affair with the sculptor Rodin. And there were other ways in which the two Johns were remarkably alike, as Mackrell vividly reveals. The result is a powerful portrait of two prodigiously talented artists and visionaries, whose experiments with form and colour created some of the most memorable work of the early twentieth century.
