Sinopsis

"Famous Histories" presents a fascinating exploration of how ordinary people transformed into cultural icons, examining twenty influential celebrities across different historical periods. The book masterfully weaves together biographical narratives with historical analysis to reveal the complex interplay of societal changes, technological advances, and personal determination in creating pathways to fame.

Through careful examination of private correspondence, media archives, and industry veteran interviews, the work challenges the notion of overnight success by highlighting the systematic forces behind celebrity creation. The book's three-part structure traces celebrity evolution from the pre-20th century, through Hollywood's golden age, to today's digital landscape.

Notable examples include Sarah Bernhardt's pioneering use of photography and global tours to achieve international stardom, and Bob Hope's transformation of celebrity humanitarian work through wartime entertainment. These cases demonstrate how historical events and technological developments, from improved transportation to communication systems, created new opportunities for fame and recognition.

Written in an engaging narrative non-fiction style, the book combines scholarly research with accessible storytelling to examine how institutional structures like theater circuits, radio networks, and social media platforms have shaped paths to stardom. By connecting media studies, sociology, and economic history, this comprehensive work offers valuable insights for both academic researchers and general readers interested in entertainment history and cultural studies, while providing context for understanding modern celebrity culture's evolution and future directions.

Co-written by Ann Cusack, the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Asylum, The Convent, Silent Sisters and Abandoned

A woman who was sexually abused by her own father and later gave birth to his daughter is now running a support group which spans 30 countries and has tens of thousands of supporters.

Stace Don, now 36, was taken into foster care as a baby after being neglected by her parents. For seven years, she lived an idyllic life, believing her foster parents were her real parents. But a chance encounter with her natural father, Nigel Taylor, shattered her happiness and she was later moved from her foster home, away from the family she loved.

Upset and angry that she had been lied to, and confused about her own identity, Stace spent the remainder of her childhood flipping between different homes. Aged 17, she visited Nigel Taylor and he refused to let her leave. Over six months, he sexually, physically, and mentally abused her, forcing her to behave in a 'wifely' role; cooking, cleaning, washing.

He paraded her as his partner in pubs and in shops, and even took her house-hunting, claiming they would live as a couple. She was also expected to have sex with him and endure sickening levels of intimacy. Stace fell pregnant aged 18 and, despite her loathing for her father, was determined to keep her baby.

Nigel Taylor was jailed for seven years in April 2011 at Basildon Crown Court after admitting sexual activity with a child family member. Stace now runs a blog and support group for other survivors of sexual abuse. Her daughter, aged 16, is fully supportive of her mother's work.

Adoption Unfiltered authors Sara Easterly (adoptee), Kelsey Vander Vliet Ranyard (birth parent), and Lori Holden (adoptive parent) interview dozens of adoptees, birth parents, adoptive parents, social workers, therapists, and other allies—all sharing candidly about the challenges in adoption. While finding common ground in the sometimes-contentious space of adoption may seem like a lofty goal, it reveals the authors' optimistic aim: working together with truth and transparency to move toward healing.

Healing isn't possible, though, without first uncovering the hurts—starting with adoption's central players: adoptees, who are so often in pain, suffering from what the latest brain science validates as the long-term emotional effects of separation trauma. By encouraging others to vulnerably share their stories, the authors discover that adoptees aren't the only ones in the adoption constellation who are hurting. Birth parents regularly shut down after being shut out by adoptive parents. Adoptive parents often struggle with unique parenting challenges and hidden insecurity, feeling the need to hide the fact that they are not the Super Parents they led the agency to believe they would be. Across the industry as a whole, misinformed and unethical practices abound. This book models the importance of adults in adoption working together in the spirit of empathy.

Inside the Dyslexic Mind - A...

    Laughton King

Laughton King shares his understanding of the dyslexic mind from his own lived experience as a dyslexic child, an angry adolescent, a therapist and eventually an author. When describing what it is like to be dyslexic, he is includes himself. ‘We think in pictures, we chase words around the pages of books, and we have trouble finding any sensible connection between squiggles on paper and real things they are meant to refer to. And this all happens in perpetual reverse gear. You guessed it, for us, school is not cool, and for most of us this makes life tough’
At the heart of this book is a ground-breaking concept — the diesel/petrol analogy. As Laughton describes it, a dyslexic person is like a diesel vehicle. They run perfectly if you give them the right fuel, but if you put petrol in the tank (i.e. expect them to learn like every ’normal’ child in our current education system) they break down. This book helps dyslexic (diesel) thinkers make sense of their lives, and provides valuable guidance for parents and teachers.
There is nothing wrong with the dyslexic child’s brain. They do not need medication and do not need to be ‘rewired’ nor ‘recalibrated’. Laughton’s message to parents and educators is that once they accept this processing difference and understand the dyslexic style of thinking they can readily work with these children and help them achieve their own success.

Laura stared at the black cloud blotting out the sun. The cloud was unlike anything she had ever seen. As it got closer, it made a strange noise, like hail pelting the ground. Suddenly the sky began to rain grasshoppers. The bugs clung to Laura's hair and clothes and peered at her with bulging eyes. Soon they began destroying Papa's crops. From the big woods of Wisconsin to the Indian country of the Great Plains, new adventures and landscapes filled the rich childhood of Laura Ingalls Wilder. On a frontier steeped in both danger and great possibility, Laura would grow up to witness firsthand the rapid transformation of the West as pioneers and covered wagons gave way to farms, towns, and railroads. A pioneer, teacher, farmer's wife, and storyteller, Laura Ingalls Wilder experienced one of the most exciting times in American history -- history that this gifted writer brought to life for millions and preserved for generations to come.

The Cherokee are among the native tribes of the United States' Southeastern Woodlands. They resided in communities along river valleys in what's now southwestern North Carolina, southeastern Tennessee, the limits of western South Carolina, northern Georgia, and northeastern Alabama just before the 18th century.
Cherokee belongs to the Iroquoian language family. One oral legend tells of the people moving south in age-old times from the Great Lakes area, where other Iroquoian-speaking tribes were based, according to James Mooney, an early American ethnographer.
