Sinopsis

"Egypt's Glorious Past" offers a captivating exploration of how the Nile River civilization became one of history's most influential societies, weaving together the complex tapestry of ancient Egyptian culture through three fundamental themes: political evolution across thirty-one dynasties, monumental architectural achievements, and the integration of spiritual practices into daily life. The book demonstrates how Egypt maintained remarkable stability and cultural continuity for over three millennia, establishing systems that would influence civilizations for generations to come. Through a masterful combination of archaeological evidence, contemporary documents, and hieroglyphic records, the text reveals how pharaohs developed sophisticated administrative systems that balanced religious authority with practical governance.Particular attention is given to architectural marvels like the pyramids, temples, and monuments, with detailed analysis of construction techniques and the mathematical principles that made these achievements possible. The examination of sites such as Giza, Luxor, and Abu Simbel illustrates how these structures served multiple purposes, from royal tombs to centers of religious and political power. The book's distinctive approach lies in its integration of traditional historical narrative with cutting-edge archaeological data, including insights from ground-penetrating radar surveys and digital reconstructions. By connecting ancient Egyptian innovations to multiple disciplines, including astronomy, chemistry, and mathematics, readers gain a comprehensive understanding of how this remarkable civilization's achievements continue to influence modern society. The text maintains scholarly rigor while remaining accessible to both history enthusiasts and students, making complex archaeological concepts understandable through clear, engaging prose.

Behind a gruesome ISIS beheading video lies the untold story of the men in orange and the faith community that formed these unlikely modern-day saints and heroes. In a carefully choreographed propaganda video released in February 2015, ISIS militants behead twenty-one orange-clad Christian men on a Libyan beach. In the West, daily reports of new atrocities may have displaced the memory of this particularly vile event. But not in the world from which the murdered came. All but one were young Coptic Christian migrant workers from Egypt. Acclaimed literary writer Martin Mosebach traveled to the Egyptian village of El-Aour to meet their families and better understand the faith and culture that shaped such conviction. He finds himself welcomed into simple concrete homes through which swallows dart. Portraits of Jesus and Mary hang on the walls along with roughhewn shrines to now-famous loved ones. Mosebach is amazed time and again as, surrounded by children and goats, the bereaved replay the cruel propaganda video on an iPad. There is never any talk of revenge, but only the pride of having a martyr in the family, a saint in heaven. “The 21” appear on icons crowned like kings, celebrated even as their community grieves. A skeptical Westerner, Mosebach finds himself a stranger in this world in which everything is the reflection or fulfillment of biblical events, and facing persecution with courage is part of daily life.In twenty-one symbolic chapters, each preceded by a picture, Mosebach offers a travelogue of his encounter with a foreign culture and a church that has preserved the faith and liturgy of early Christianity – the “Church of the Martyrs.” As a religious minority in Muslim Egypt, the Copts find themselves caught in a clash of civilizations. This book, then, is also an account of the spiritual life of an Arab country stretched between extremism and pluralism, between a rich biblical past and the shopping centers of New Cairo.

A poignant meditation on mortality from a beloved Canadian poet

A writer friend once pointed out that whenever Stuart Ross got close to something heavy and “real” in a poem, a hamburger would inevitably appear for comic relief. In this hybrid essay/memoir/poetic meditation, Ross shoves aside the heaping plate of burgers to wrestle with what it means to grieve the people one loves and what it means to go on living in the face of an enormous accumulation of loss. Written during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, shortly after the sudden death of his brother left him the last living member of his family and as a catastrophic diagnosis meant anticipating the death of his closest friend, this meditation on mortality — a kind of literary shiva — is Ross’s most personal book to date. More than a catalogue of losses, The Book of Grief and Hamburgers is a moving act of resistance against self-annihilation and a desperate attempt to embrace all that was good in his relationships with those most dear to him.

The power and ancient symbology of the raven carries this story through its historic presence for centuries at the Tower of London to current landscapes including the sandstone monolith of Mount Arapiles in Western Victoria. Several years ago, I was approached by Carolyn Wyman, author of “The Great American Chocolate Chip Cookie Book” to write a book about Otis Spunkmeyer Cookies. I am co-founder of Otis Spunkmeyer Cookies with my husband, but no one starts a company alone. I told her that Otis Spunkmeyer was about many things besides cookies, and I wrote stories to prove it. Carolyn agreed, indicating my most fascinating stories had nothing to do with cookies. She suggested I compile my “you can’t make this up” stories of improbable possibilities.
My entrepreneurial stories are of Robert C. Brown and Company, investment advisors, and Otis Spunkmeyer Cookies and Burritos. Triple 888 Manufacturing, the sheet metal company that created the oven to bake Otis Spunkmeyer cookies. Sentimental Journeys, the DC3 airline that promoted Otis Spunkmeyer. New Shoes, Old Souls Dance Company, Yoga Garden Dancers, Heterodoxy Magazine, and George Magazine. Yes, I did meet with John F. Kennedy Jr., to incubate George. I also took Joe DiMaggio to Las Vegas and Van Morrison sang “Moondance” to me. Albert Einstein is one of my heroes. I have daughters. These narratives are a memorialization of my improbable possibilities. My spaghetti-walling spirit propagated waves.
The most powerful quantum computers can’t negotiate infinite waves of possibilities. Artificial intelligence generates probable possibilities. Human intelligence imagines improbable possibilities. Artificial intelligence exists on codes and algorithms. Human intelligence is nurtured by thinking with thoughtfulness. It actualizes imagination, and spaghetti-walls improbable possibilities.
This is not a treatise on mindfulness. It is not an AI bashing, or a self-help book. Primarily, I am spaghetti-walling this book to entertain you. I’ve been determined to make waves.
