Sinopse

Dead Sea Mysteries explores the multifaceted nature of this unique body of water, weaving together its historical, ecological, and therapeutic dimensions. The book delves into the Dead Sea's significance in Biblical history, highlighting its mentions in the Old Testament and examining how ancient beliefs shaped interactions with the Sea.Intriguingly, despite its high mineral concentration that makes it difficult for most life forms to survive, the Dead Sea has been revered for millennia for its purported healing properties. The book also examines the Dead Sea's unusual ecosystem, focusing on the halophilic organisms that thrive in its extreme environment and the geological forces that formed it.It critically assesses the scientific basis for the Sea’s therapeutic claims, analyzing studies on skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. By presenting archaeological findings, scientific research, and historical accounts, Dead Sea Mysteries offers a comprehensive understanding of the Dead Sea's enduring relevance. The book progresses from biblical context to ecological analysis and finally to therapeutic claims, building a holistic view of this fascinating landmark.

The following are live recordings of Japanese-American Iva Toguri, of "Tokyo Rose" infamy. Tokyo Rose was a generic name given by Allied troops in the South Pacific during World War II to all female English-speaking radio broadcasters of Japanese propaganda. In fact, the name "Tokyo Rose" was never actually used by any Japanese broadcaster, but rather first appeared in U.S. newspapers in 1943 in the context of these radio programs. Toguri had traveled to Japan to tend to a sick aunt just prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Unable to leave the country when war began with the United States, unable to stay with her aunt's family as an American citizen, and unable to receive any aid from her parents who were placed in internment camps in Arizona, Toguri eventually accepted a job as a part-time typist at Radio Tokyo. She was quickly recruited as a broadcaster for the propagandist program The Zero Hour, under the moniker, Orphan Ann. The name Tokyo Rose ceased to be merely a symbol, however, during September 1945 when Toguri attempted to return to the United States. Toguri was arrested and imprisoned for a year in Japan by American authorities. She was subsequently freed, then arrested again two years later. After being returned to the US, Toguri was tried and convicted of one count of treason, in a trial fraught with integrity issues and dubious testimony. Toguri was eventually paroled from prison in 1956, and finally received a pardon from President Gerald Ford in 1977.

He is best known for his four novels—This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby, and Tender Is The Night—depicting the flamboyance and excess of the Jazz Age. Every year, hundreds of thousands of young people pack their bags to study or volunteer abroad. Well-intentioned and curious Westerners—brought up to believe that international travel broadens our horizons—travel to low-income countries to learn about people and cultures different from their own. While travel abroad can provide much-needed perspective, it can also be deeply unsettling, confusing, and discomforting. Travelers can find themselves unsure about how to think or speak about the differences in race or culture they find, even though these differences might have fueled their desire to travel in the first place.

In Beyond Guilt Trips: Mindful Travel in an Unequal World, storyteller Anu Taranath begins at home, unpacking our baggage about who we are, where we come from, and how much we have. She takes us on a journey through engaging personal travel stories and thought-provoking questions, providing us with tools to grapple with our discomfort and navigate differences with accountability and connection. Yes, travel! But be mindful. Be present.
