Sinopse

"Colors of Spice" presents a fascinating journey through the transformative role of spices in human civilization, exploring how simple plant materials became powerful drivers of global trade, medicine, and cultural exchange. The book masterfully weaves together three interconnected narratives: the historical spice trade routes that shaped ancient civilizations, the scientific understanding of spices' biochemical properties, and their enduring cultural significance in various societies.Through a carefully structured approach, the book first establishes the botanical foundations of common spices before delving into their historical significance. Drawing from archaeological evidence and historical documents, it reveals how spices evolved from luxury items to everyday ingredients, while simultaneously serving as catalysts for scientific advancement and medical innovation. Particularly intriguing is the examination of how spice trade routes not only facilitated commercial exchange but also served as channels for cultural and technological diffusion between civilizations. The book's unique strength lies in its interdisciplinary approach, combining insights from anthropology, food science, and cultural history. By integrating interviews with spice merchants and food historians alongside scientific research, it offers readers both practical knowledge about spice usage and deeper understanding of their cultural significance. This comprehensive exploration makes the book valuable for both culinary professionals and enthusiasts interested in the intersection of food, culture, and science, while maintaining an accessible writing style that engages general readers.

It's hard to imagine our world without its stars and celebrity geniuses—they become a part of our culture and history, seeming permanent and preordained. But as Cass Sunstein shows in this startling book, that is far from the case. Focusing on both famous and forgotten (or simply overlooked) artists and luminaries in music, literature, business, science, politics, and other fields, he explores why some individuals become famous and others don't and offers a new understanding of the role of greatness, luck, and contingency in the achievement of fame.

First, Sunstein examines recent research—on informational cascades, power laws, network effects, and group polarization—to probe the question of how people become famous. He explores what ends up in the history books, in the great religious texts, and in the literary canon—and how that changes radically over time. He delves into the rich and entertaining stories of a diverse cast of famous characters, from John Keats, William Blake, and Jane Austen to Bob Dylan, Ayn Rand, and Stan Lee—as well as John, Paul, George, and Ringo.

How to Become Famous takes you on a fun, captivating, and at times profound journey that will forever change your perspective on the latest celebrity's "fifteen minutes," the nature of memory, success and failure in business, and our enduring fascination with fame.

On February 15, 2015, Kate Matrosova, an avid mountaineer, set off before sunrise for a traverse of the Northern Presidential Range in New Hampshire's White Mountains. Late the following day, rescuers carried her frozen body out of the mountains amid some of the worst weather ever recorded on these deceptively rugged slopes.

At thirty-two, Matrosova was ultra-fit and healthy and had already summited much larger mountains on several continents. Her gear included a rescue beacon and a satellite phone. Yet, despite their best efforts, more than forty expert search and rescue personnel, a New Hampshire Army National Guard Blackhawk helicopter, and a Civil Air Patrol Cessna airplane could not reach her in time to save her.

    What went wrong?

Where You'll Find Me offers possible answers to that question, demonstrating why Matrosova's story—what we know and what we will never know—represents such an intriguing and informative case study in risk analysis and decision-making.

Sounds of Other Shores takes an ethnographic ear to the history of transoceanic stylistic appropriation in the Swahili taarab music of the Kenyan coast. Swahili taarab, a form of sung poetry that emerged as East Africa's first mass-mediated popular music in the 1930s, is a famously cosmopolitan form, rich in audible influences from across the Indian Ocean. But the variants of the genre that emerged in the Kenyan coastal city of Mombasa during the twentieth century feature particularly dramatic, even flamboyant, appropriations of Indian and Arab sonic gestures and styles. Combining oral history, interpretive ethnography, and musical analysis, Sounds of Other Shores explores how Swahili-speaking Muslims in twentieth-century Mombasa derived pleasure and meaning from acts of transoceanic musical appropriation, arguing that these acts served as ways of reflecting on and mediating the complexities and contradictions associated with being "Swahili" in colonial and postcolonial Kenya. The result is a musical anthropology of Kenyan Swahili subjectivity that reframes longstanding questions about Swahili identity while contributing to broader discussions about identity and citizenship in Africa and the Indian Ocean world.

In this book, James argues that the most important criterion for evaluating ideas and beliefs is their practical usefulness in real-life situations, rather than their abstract truth or correspondence to reality. James introduces the concept of "pragmatism," which he defines as a method of approaching philosophical questions by examining their practical consequences. He argues that truth is not an absolute and fixed entity, but rather a relative and changing one that is determined by the practical outcomes of our beliefs and actions. Read in English, unabridged.
